INTRODUCTION

Rationale

The main goal of Industry Immersion is to improve students' second language

acquisition as well as their understanding of academic subjects and cultural context. As a

result, in an increasingly independent global society, students should be able to engage

and interact competently with more people in more places (Al-Halawachy, 2019). Based

on the study of The University of Alabama that industry immersion offers the most

motivated students the opportunity to explore the industry, lead the job market, and

engage with leadership (The University of Alabama, 2017). In order to have a better

experience, industry immersion was conducted by exposing the students through hands-

on experience, since the school has already implemented a face to face mid-year class for

the students to be able to learn more about the chosen farm organizations.

Mr. Julius N. Go was the owner and manager of Go’s Poultry Farm. Its location is

in Barangay Bidlinan Baybay City, Leyte. Chicken eggs, culls and quail eggs are the

products offered by the business firm. They were dealing with tremendous and competing

problems as they continued to control the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Additionally, the business firm has adapted to the crisis with an innovative mindset,

variable cost structures, and agile operations. In addition, the business must effectively

manage the financial and operational challenges posed by the epidemic through

supplying the business ineluctably from their suppliers while also addressing the needs of

their employees and customers.

With the help of Mr. Go and his poultry farm technician as well as the farm

caretakers, students gained knowledge and various strategies in managing a business firm

throughout conducting the hands-on experience of industry immersion, were also

discussed and provided the Profile/Overview of the Organization, Observations based on

Internal and External Environmental Scanning, and Identification of Strategy.

Objectives of the Study

Generally, this immersion program aims to provide agribusiness industry

exposure to incoming senior BSAB students. At the end of the period, the student should

have:

1. Gained actual experience on the four functional areas of management;

2. Developed awareness on the threats and opportunities surrounding the business

organization;

3. Conducted SWOT analysis of the chosen organization;

4. Identified the strategies adapted by the management of the chosen business

organization; and

5. Written a reflection of the immersion experience.

Importance of the Industry Immersion

Industry immersion is a mandatory course in which students are exposed to actual

field activities in order to apply their agricultural farming knowledge and obtain hands-on

experience in various farm operation and management practices. This course is critical in

the development of the student’s capacity in order to apply academic methods and

approaches to real-world circumstances. The hands-on experience of industry immersion

was a great way to exposed students into different aspects on knowing the business firm

that were able to become acquainted with the Go’s Poultry Farm with the guidance of Mr.

Julius N. Go together with his poultry farm technician and caretakers and also the

assistance of the instructors.

This study is significant for academe, researchers, practitioner, organization,

government because:

Academe - Industry immersion allows academe to polish industry-specific abilities and

update current competences, resulting in skilled graduates who are immediately

employable by businesses following graduation.

Researchers - The researchers will benefit from this study since it will help them

enhance their knowledge and abilities in agricultural farming especially layering farms,

which they can use as a reference in their research.

Practitioner - As practitioner who actively works in their area after learning everything

and through industry immersion, it exposes students to real, on-the-job situations where

decisions have actual consequences beyond achieving goals. The work experience aims

to provide an in-depth training that could help practitioners develop the abilities,

understanding, and even attitude needed for their future employment. As a result, it

would be a great opportunity for the learners to develop their abilities and talents.

Organization - The organization will aid them in coming up with fresh ideas on how to

improve their approaches and strategies in order to increase their performance. Mr. Julius

N. Go, the owner, will also advantage from this research because it will enable him to

gain a better understanding of his business. In addition, the need for change inside the
organization is better understood when there is open communication. The improvement

efforts are focused on a continuous drive in order to find new employee insights and

ways to assist their personnel in progressing. This is done by implementing a learning,

development, skill- and competency-development, and job improvement program.

Government - The results of this study will be used to make program recommendations

to the LGU for the implementation of useful program initiatives. The findings of this

research will assist the government in effectively pushing local government involvement

in providing support services as a major aspect in motivating local farmers or individual’s

to continue poultry farming.

PROFILE/OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION

Go's Poultry Farm is located in Barangay Bidlinan which is situated in

mountainous areas of Baybay City, Leyte. In fact, Ms. Belen N. Go is the owner of the

poultry farm, but in 2014 she decided to register the poultry farm to her son who is Mr.

Julius N. Go who takes over in managing the business firm. The poultry farm was built a

few years ago with an initial capital of 300,000 pesos and until now the farm has still

continued to make its own name as a popular supplier and producer of high-quality eggs

in Baybay City. Aside from being popular, Ms. Belen N. Go had other businesses such as

the Belen Go's Supermart, Meat Shop, Piggery and Fish Pond.

The poultry farm had an estimated 1 hectare occupying five (5) buildings which

constitutes more than 10,000 heads of layer chickens and one (1) building that consist of

500 heads of quails. Then, the buildings were made of coconut lumber and galvanized

iron with a concrete permanent building. Incorporated to have seven (7) caretakers

including one (1) farm technician. The first batch of harvested eggs in the morning was

recorded and another batch of harvested eggs during the afternoon. Then, a total of one

hundred forty-three (143) trays were commonly collected in all buildings and more than

400 pieces of quail eggs were also harvested daily.

At present, the farm has more than 10,000 heads of layer chicken and on 29th day

of July 2022, the owner has loaded another 3,400 heads of new layering chicks to their

other building and later the chicken will be transferred to the production building when

they reach the exact days old as the next set of layering chicken. According to caretakers,

the majority of the layer chicken will be culled and sell the chicken alive for only 110
pesos. On the other hand, the dead chicken was directly disposed of in the designated

area.
OBSERVATIONS BASED ON INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL

ENVIRONMENTAL SCANNING

Internal Environmental Scanning

Firm’s Organization and Management

Industrial organization and management evaluates operational and non-

operational aspects that impact a firm's broader business plan and positioning strategy. It

entails a study of various factors that influence a firm's operations, such as market power,

product innovation, and industrial policy (Chen, 2020). Go's poultry farm was established

in Barangay Bidlinan, which is located in Baybay City, Leyte's mountainous regions.

Since it was constructed a few years ago, the poultry farm has worked hard to establish

itself as Baybay City's preferred source of premium eggs. Along with being well-known,

the business also runs other enterprises including a meat shop and supermart. The poultry

farm contained more than 10,000 heads of layer chickens spread across an estimated 1

hectare of space in five buildings. With a permanent building made of concrete, the

structures were constructed from coconut lumber and galvanized steel.

It is essential to keep as much organic material away from surfaces that are being

disinfected when managing the farm. An effective cleaning and sanitizing operation for

poultry houses will reduce the negative effects of disease, improve layer chicken's

productivity and welfare, and provide guarantees regarding food safety concerns.

Maintaining cleanliness in the location and upholding one's obligations to do so are

essential for good sanitation and the maintenance of a healthy environment. Also,

composting was a widely used technique for garbage disposal. Animal droppings can be
utilized as fertilizer, which is solid organic matter. A better waste disposal management

strategy that raises the standard of cleanliness on poultry farms is routine cleaning as well

as sanitation of the equipment materials. The cleanliness of the poultry farm is carefully

maintained. It is essential to clean the entire poultry area, including the floor and PVC

pipes. To ensure that the dirt has been cleaned off, the student trainee and poultry farm

caretakers washed the pipe's and other materials. Infestation of flies and other insects in

the vicinity was one of the frequent causes of unclean pipes. Each pipe must be manually

cleaned as part of this task to remove the dirt that has become stuck within using cleaning

tools like sponge and steel wool. In order to avoid bacteria and keep everything clean, it

is the most important thing to do.

In feeding management, the poultry farm has access to clean and fresh drinking

water all the time. In fact, water is the most important nutrient for poultry species. Most

especially in the dry season where water consumption is highly observed and will be at

least 3 times daily. Feedstuff should not be moldy or musty and require more feed to lay a

dozen eggs with proper management. With regards to health management, isolation of the

flock is utilized to easily manage any harmful organisms causing diseases. Regular

vaccinations and parasite control of the poultry species should be employed in a farm.

Then, administered treatments, antibiotics and vitamins in order to control the secondary

infection and avoid the spread of diseases in the flock was maintained as well in the farm

which is a good practice. A good ventilation is also a factor to consider in health

management to better perform good quality of chicken eggs. Lastly, with the post-

harvesting management, this includes a series of operations including the cleaning,

storage, grading, packaging, and transportation to market. After collecting eggs, the farm

operators get ready for transporting the eggs to the market.

Firm’s Operation

The business organization of Go’s Poultry Farm has post-harvesting management

that mainly involves a series of operations including the storage, cleaning, grading,

packaging, and transporting of the products to the local market. Additionally, the

business firm also produces culls when the layer chickens reach 8 months old and

replaced with a new set of layered chickens since the business also has the production of

growing layer chicks from the other building as replacement for the continuation of the

business operation.

In collecting of eggs, the farm caretakers are always ready to transport the eggs to

the market. The collection of eggs was the system in which the farm caretakers properly

collect the eggs produced by the quails and layering chicken. In fact, the collection of

eggs was conducted twice a day in which the first batch was harvested in the morning and

the other batch was in the afternoon. Also, to ensure egg quality, proper handling of egg

should be highly observed. In the processing area, the chicken eggs must be cleaned,

grade and sorted by size and have the proper package in order to avoid any damages.

Then, the quail eggs were also cleaned and have separate packing before transporting to

the local market since it was directly delivered to the contracted buyer. In relation to their

culled chicken, it was immediately transported to their supermart just like their chicken

eggs and even neighboring areas can buy culls within the field of the poultry farm

through approaching the farm caretakers.

Firm’s Marketing

Marketing refers to activities a company undertakes to promote the buying or

selling of a product or service. Also, marketing includes advertising, selling, and

delivering products to consumers and other businesses. The business of Go's Poultry

Farm contained more than 10,000 heads of layering chickens across the estimated 1

hectare, occupying the five buildings. Also, the farm owner has loaded an additional

3,400 of new layering chicks in which it will be transferred when they reach the exact

days old to the production area as new sets of layering chickens. The products that the

business firm offered are chicken eggs, culls and quail eggs.

The prices of chicken eggs may vary to the sizes and weight of the eggs. The

prices offered for small sizes is ₱6.00, for medium it's ₱6.75, for the large sizes is ₱7.0,

for the XL is ₱7.35 and for the Jumbo's price is ₱7.95. When the customers want to buy a

tray or dozens of chicken eggs, they also have different prices such as 180 pesos (Small),

200 pesos (Medium), 210 pesos (Large), 220 pesos (XL) and 235 (Jumbo) per tray. Then,

for the dozen prices were ₱72.00 (Small), ₱81.00 (Medium), ₱84.00 (Large), ₱88.20

(XL), and ₱95.40 (Jumbo). Therefore, it is more convenient to buy the chicken eggs from

the distributor of the products to lessen the expenses, compared to a sari-sari store where

it may change and increase the pricing of the chicken eggs. The prices that they offer for

the culled chicken is ₱110.00, and ₱2.00 per piece of quail eggs. In addition, Go's Poultry

Farm gets the supply of feeds, vitamins and livestock to their trusted suppliers namely CJ

Philippines, Inc. in Manila, Bulacan and VITARICH Corporation in Cebu and also new

layering chicks were marketed in Cebu. All of the products harvested in the poultry farm
such as chicken eggs, culls and quail eggs are delivered to Belen Go's Supermart as they

sell their produced products. Since, it is a physical store located in the City of Baybay and

owned by Ms. Belen N. Go, the mother of Mr. Julius N. Go who owns the poultry farm

and they directly offered the products to the customers within the locality.

Firm’s Finance

Financial management is critical to the success of any successful firm. For the

reason that good business generates money, it is possible to pay bills for goods and pay

salaries to personnel in an organization using the money. In that case, Mr. Go makes an

effort to review the financial components of the firm on a regular basis in order to

manage it efficiently. They conducted regular inventories in order to improve the

stocking of their products and the proper storage of poultry farm supplies. In addition, Mr.

Go was capable of improving sales, reducing customer turnover, and providing priceless

marketing by constantly keeping his customers in mind.

External Environmental Scanning

Political

Political circumstances play an important role not only in the investment

decisions of multinationals, but also in business organizations such as poultry farms. In

fact, the political environment and other factors affect not only the cost of doing business,

but also long-term sustainability. Additionally, political factors have included the

governance systems, law, democracy and institutions, and order in markets.

The poultry farm's political control system has a stable political position and has

developed strategies based on a stable political environment through management

procedures and strong bond of relationship towards employees as well as consumers.

Also, the government in the local area has been consistent in enacting both laws and

regulations, as the business firm follows the Baybay City ordinance for all the businesses

operating in the locality. Mr. Go has also explained to the poultry farm caretakers the

rules and laws to follow when operating a business. In addition, proper care should be

taken seriously to be able not to harm the layered chicken as well as the environment and

nearby residence.

As such, health and safety regulations must always be observed. In this way, the

firm's normative regulatory practices helped improve their local market image by

improving the way they manage the business, since the firm was a well-known supplier

of high-quality egg and contributed culled chicken in the market and neighboring areas.
Economic

National and regional economic conditions directly affect the potential

attractiveness of a particular market. Then, some of the economic factors that Go's

Poultry Farm will need to assess in both its current market and the market it intends in

order to enter inflation rate, GDP growth rate, household income, work productivity, and

other relevant economic concerns of a business organization. Currently, the country is

experiencing the effects of inflation, making most products and other resources more

expensive.

In that case, inflation has a significant impact on the demand for Go’s Poultry

Farm products. Since rising inflation can force businesses to continually raise prices to

match inflation, reducing product loyalty and necessitating a constant effort to keep costs

down. Thus, the cost-based pricing issue is one of the business firm’s threats, making

them adopt bad strategies especially in the recent condition. Also, as the country faces

inflation rates, consumer income is more disadvantaged than other household incomes

when it comes to how individuals budget their income for basic daily needs. However,

the company has expanded its market beyond traditional customers by applying a

differentiated marketing strategy in order to meet the needs of all customers. Another

reason was labor productivity that allows business firms to hire skilled workers at

competitive salaries, but this does not reflect profits. In this regard, poultry farm owners

hire trusted caretakers to help maintain the operational processes of their business. Not

only that, the firm also undertakes building maintenance to extend and repair building

damages as consideration for the future success of operations within the facility.
The factors that individuals encounter today are alarming and the presence of

nearby competitors in the local market means that the business firm needs to be extra

careful when it comes to building marketing strategies that need to rely on consumer

behavior. Also, the owner keeps abreast of any challenges encountered in order to

immediately address any issues that may affect production of the business as well as

valued customers. According to Mr. Go, the poultry farm owner that challenges

strengthen their organizations success and this shows that there is always a solution when

problems arise, whether in good and bad times.

Social

Social factors such as demographics, societal power structures, health and safety

attitude, societal norms and hierarchy and female labor force participation have a

significant impact not only on the betterment of the economy, but also on labor

availability and levels of consumer’s demand. Demographics are one of the key factors in

forecasting the demand of the economy as the demand for the products is mainly directed

towards the growth of the segment. In relation to this, Go's Poultry Farm already

considers demographic trends before new product development in order to address

segments where the population is now aging and technology-intensive products are less

needed. Another was the structural forces in society and how they affect economic

demand. The area allocated by poultry farms is gradually shifting to an older generation,

a generation with higher disposable income compared to the younger generation that have

been encountered by the poultry farm owner on how they operate the business.
Moreover, one of the most important things to practice is the attitude towards

health and safety protocols. This is often reflected in the product quality and the cost

structure of the production process. In fact, Go's Poultry Farm's rigorous health and safety

standards mean it may have to compete in emerging markets with nearby competitors

who do not have the high cost structures to run their business organization. Also, societal

norms and hierarchies that influence the nature and level of consumption in society are

accepted and decision-making power is often at the top. Not only that, it has also had a

significant impact on gender labor consumption and companies have practiced the gender

composition of the labor market as an opportunity for individuals by hiring women on

their poultry farm and even to other businesses since they also run grocery stores and

meat shops in the local market. In that case, it mainly allows us to understand social

freedom, women's rights, women's voices on social issues and consumer decision-making.

Recently, the population growth has increased the consumption of eggs and

consumer demand for meat has also impacted local markets and nearby locations. Thus,

the demand from a growing population was beneficial to the production of the said

business firm, since the poultry farms are sources of high quality eggs in the local area

and also meat products since culled chicken were also offered in the business operation in

order to meet the needs of the consumers.

Technological

Technological factors include production techniques, information and

communication resources, production, logistics, marketing, and e-commerce technologies.

These affect how an organization operates, sells its products, interacts with, and gathers
intelligence on customers, suppliers, and competitors. In the case of Go's Poultry Farm,

they use manpower in the operation of the business. The equipment that the business

firm owned were huge fans, where most of the layering chickens were placed to keep

them ventilated from the heat of the sun. They also have debeaking equipment which is

used in debeaking the new layering chicks. The poultry farm has two water tanks which

use electricity, to fill the water containers of the chickens and quails. The effective

implementation of technology is totally dependent on the human factor. Collection of

eggs is the system in which the farm operators properly collect the eggs they produce. To

ensure egg quality, proper handling of eggs should be highly observed. In the processing

area, the eggs must be washed, grade and sorted by size and proper packaging.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities determine technology effectiveness and

efficiency. Technology has the ability to take on multiple tasks at once. Technology must

address natural (physical and mental) abilities and ensure success and safety. The use of

technology in a business has created opportunities for more technological advances

mainly in the production of Go's Poultry Farm.

Environmental

Environmental factors include all those relating to the physical environment and

to general environmental protection requirements. Go's poultry farm is located in

Barangay Bidlinan which is situated in mountainous areas of Baybay City, Leyte. The

poultry farm is far from the households area which is right, animal droppings may affect

the neighboring households. The caretakers were maintaining the cleanliness of the entire

poultry farm, including the pipes and floors. Infestation of flies and other insects was one
of the causes of unclean pipes, each pipe has been manually draining the waters using a

steel wool and a sponge to remove the dirt. The poultry farm also has access to clean and

fresh water and is located near a river, which is needed especially in the dry season where

water consumption is highly observed which is caused by global warming. A good

ventilation is also a factor to consider in health management to better perform good

quality of chicken eggs.

Legal

Legislation affecting workforce, resources, limits, export and import, taxation,

and the availability of materials are among the legal factors. Both internal and external

aspects of these elements exist. The business environment in the local area where the

poultry farm is located can be impacted by specific laws. In contrast to these laws and

regulations, each business has its own set of guidelines that employees must adhere to.

One of which is the health and safety laws ensuring that the chicken environment and

feeds are clean as it can affect the health of the layer chickens and will affect the health of

consumers as well.

Another is that they have the opportunity to be known as they complied with the

legal requirements for having their business. With regards to managing their employees

or workers, they are being treated well as they are supplied with their daily foods and

needs in their barracks. This legal assessment takes into account legislative changes that

have an effect on the taxation of the company as well as employment, the availability of

materials, regulations, and resources.

Competition

Businesses compete to convert and retain customers, increase revenue and gain

more market share. Every business faces this issue, and the key success factors here are

creating a strategy that improves customer service and team support. The poultry farm

has few competitors near the location which has around four (4) poultry farms nearby.

The advantage of the farm from those competitors is that Go’s poultry farm is registered

in a legal office which was the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the business

firm were still on top of producing high quality eggs for almost 8 years compared to the

competitors. In addition, they are well known producers of eggs in the area and other

local areas as they also have a supermart or grocery store and meat shop which is an

advantage to sell and market their product. The demand for eggs has significantly

influenced both the number of chickens reared and the ratio that will be saved in layers.
IDENTIFICATION OF STRATEGY

Strong Management Practices

Mr. Julius N. Go can boost his employees' contentment and development by

getting to know them personally, thereby increasing the company's success and

productivity. Mr. Go also provides his employees all the resources and assistance they

need to not just perform well, but to surpass expectations.

Providing Excellent Customer Service

Going beyond to meet your customer's basic needs is what excellent customer

service entails. More importantly, it entails doing everything necessary to ensure that

your consumers are not only content, but delighted with your goods and services. If you

want your firm to succeed, you must provide exceptional customer service. Mr. Go is

constantly emphasizing how well their clients, particularly valued customers are treated

as well as their suppliers.

Maintaining Strong Personal Relationship to the Customers and Farm Employees

In fact, Mr. Go remained in contact with his poultry farm employees by visiting

their farm on a regular basis since it is far from their supermart in which his usual visit is

only on their grocery store wherein he keeps on providing them with excellent solutions

whenever an issue arises. They will have a favourable opinion if a firm knows how to

appreciate the customer and the staff and foster a happy, cooperative, and cheerful

environment.

In addition, satisfied customers are more inclined to buy more of the goods and

make frequent returns because they prefer to spend their money with a company that
provides good and high-quality service. The employees must be skilled in sales and

communication if they want to offer the greatest customer service. Additionally, they'll

need to showcase their leadership skills by consistently offering great and excellent

customer service.

Maintaining an Effective and Efficient Marketing Tactics

Go’s poultry farm keeps in touch with their two company suppliers, CJ

PHILIPPINES, INC. and VITARICH CORPORATION that provided them to supply

their poultry farm basic needs in operating the business. Feeding is a major element of

growing chickens because it accounts for the majority of production costs and adequate

nutrition is reflected in the performance and quality of the chicken's production. There is

minimal possibility of changing the accessible feeding and watering area for egg-strain

pullets raised in cages, but regular observations are required to make sure feed and water

are being constantly given. Having a good relationship and great suppliers of quality

feeds and other needs for the poultry helps a business maintain its reputation and attract

more loyal clients and build stronger business organizations.

IMPRESSIONS

In conducting the hands-on experience of industry immersion, the students were

exposed to the different activities from feeding and providing water to layer chicken,

collecting eggs, proper sanitation and waste disposal, supplementing of vitamins,

debeaking and data recording. In addition, have gained actual experience on the four

functional areas of management through observations based on internal and external

environmental scanning as well as the identification of strategies of the chosen business

firm. Moreover, the farm technician and caretakers guided the students on conducting the

daily activities in order to perform better. As a student trainee, as much as they wanted to

experience the skills for the reason that in the real world it is way different, especially the

environment and the people that surrounds them.

Immersion has cognitive benefits such as mental flexibility, increased sensitivity

to others, and improved ability to learn more. With this, the students will improve the

ability to solve complex problems and greatly improve analytical and creative abilities.

During the conduct of our hands-on experience in Go’s Poultry Farm wherein we are

required to have 15 days exposure that consist of 120 hours duty. The farm caretakers are

very accommodating with their guidance on how we are going to do the tasks properly.

Then, I was able to learn how to properly handle the harvested eggs without damaging

them, and the proper way of feeding the layer chickens without wasting their food. The

cleanliness of the area must also be maintained by draining the wastewater of PVC pipes

every morning and sanitizing the whole area as it will affect the health of layered

chickens and quails with potential source of contamination and disease. Layer chickens
also need constant water, especially during the dry season, and water is very important to

them, so it needs to be managed all the time. For all the experiences we had with our

chosen firm, we have been told by the farm caretakers that feeding small amounts of feed

is not a problem as long as the chickens will eat all the feeds and must only observe that

there is no left over. In order to have a better way to feed enough food to the chicken, just

only estimate the right amount of food that can reduce the waste of feed. The tendency to

give a lot of food can have an unpleasant smell and in this case the layer chicken will not

eat them. Also, the process in debeaking of new layer chicks was a great experience since

electric debeaking machines were used in order to avoid killing the chicks unlike the

manual debeak cutter that would lead on bleeding their beaks that causes their deaths.

Thus, not only to accomplish the 120 hours but to be able to gain future skills while

experiencing real-world job training on a poultry farm.

The purpose of this industry immersion is not just to gain first hands-on

experience. It also aims to develop young professionals with good work ethics and values

who will be synonymous as future trainees. Then, Industry Immersion taught students the

value of punctuality, good working relationships with subordinates and supervisors, the

importance of confidentiality of information, and professionalism in the workplace. The

experiences we had at our chosen business firm was new to us in which it was very

challenging and grateful at the same time, then we met new friendly people inside the

facility who were kind and made us feel like family. It also drives my passion and skills

to do more in the future. Another, have provided an excellent opportunity to learn more

about how a business operates, especially those experiences we had in Go’s Poultry Farm
through feeding and providing water to the layer chickens, supplementing vitamins,

cleaning up the area and disposing of dead chicken, organizing of tray and crates, folding

empty sacks of feeds, harvesting of eggs, sorting of eggs, recording of harvested eggs and

culls, and lastly debeaking of new layer chicks. In addition, my teammates were always

willing to help through prioritizing teamwork when there were times when managing

some activities was not easy. Along the way, we also experienced some challenges inside

the facility. First, when there is no electricity, we need to fetch water from the water

pump if the water tank is already out of stock as used in providing water to the layer

chickens and quails that are also used for cleaning the drinking area. Additionally,

transporting eggs was difficult since the bridge was damaged by Typhoon Agaton. In that

case, the farm caretakers need to carry kilometers from the poultry farm in order to

transport the eggs to the delivery truck. Then, controlling the amount of feeds not to put

too much and not too little for the reason that the feeds will easily rot and must be thrown

away. Also, the floor was dangerous knowing that the floor of the first building is made

up of wood unlike the other building and sometimes slippery when the water overflows

on refilling the containers. The poultry farm caretakers advised us to be extra careful and

always watch our step. Among all the circumstances inside the business firm, we were

able to develop knowledge, skills and experiences to be more observant and know how

to operate a business.

Working in a poultry farm is very challenging, we have to maintain the

cleanliness and health of the layering chickens. It may be stinky in the area but, as the

times went by we were getting used to it. I've learned a lot of things during the hands-on
experience such as proper handling of eggs, the right way of feeding the layering

chickens, debeaking of chicks and many more. Feeding chickens is one of the hardest

jobs that I've experienced on the farm. We used the water pail to feed the chickens which

is very heavy plus the building is also old where some parts are fragile and it's scary to go

through. Collecting and arranging the eggs is also a fun experience. We also experience

applying vitamins to the water pipes of the chicken and draining the pipes, as well as

disposing of the dead chickens. Getting the cull out of their cages is also a fun experience.

And lastly, debeaking of new chicks is my favorite because it's my first time to

experience it and it is very easy because it is an equipment. I'm also grateful to the farm

owners and caretakers for guiding us through our journey in the poultry farm and was

able to experience this kind of opportunity. We also create a bond in such a short period

of times, we were able to express ourselves to our colleagues and treat each others like a

family

To possibly enhance the ability of students to learn more quickly in various jobs,

actual training of the students needs hands-on experience with safe and measurable

training in a risk-free environment. Being immersed in a poultry farm was new but had a

great experience. I found it unpleasant at first because of the smell and some organisms

on the ground but as days passed by, I was able to get used to it as it is just normal for

poultry farms as long as the cleanliness is regularly maintained. Working in a poultry

farm is hard as we need to regularly clean their food and water containers as it will affect

their health with possible contamination and diseases. It was great to learn and experience

something new like feeding layer chickens, harvesting eggs, debeaking and more which
is totally new in my case. In all those experiences, I had fun and was able to meet new

friends in the workplace and had a good relationship that makes our work easier and fun

to do with.
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, RECOMMENDATION

Summary

As part of the requirements, the students are required to perform 120 hours duty

hands-on experience at Go’s Poultry Farm in Barangay Bidlinan Baybay City, Leyte

from Monday to Friday and start on the 19th day of July to 8th day of August 2022. The

students were able to perform hands-on experience in the poultry farm through gaining

the four functional areas of management as well as conducting SWOT analysis,

developing awareness and strategies of the business organization. In line with this, the

students were able to acquire new skills and knowledge that include the proper way of

sanitizing the area and disposing of dead chicken to the proper disposing area. Moreover,

regular visitation of the chicken’s water PVC pipes due to high temperature since the

chicken needs enough water from time to time and learned the proper way on how to

collect eggs and must be careful all the time. On the other side, the proper way of

supplementing vitamins to the layer chicken is to provide them with a variety of minerals

in order to maintain their good health. Since vitamins helps in boosting growth and egg

production of the chicken through the use of alternate way of applying Spectrum and

Vitamin C Electrolytes both performance enhancer, Doxycycline Hydrochloride

(Antibacterial) and Calcium that are only good for once or thrice a week depending on

the layer chicken’s exact vitamins. Not only that, we have known the importance of the

process of debeaking new layer chicks as this helps to reduce cannibalism, aggressive

behaviors, and feather pecking. In fact, outside the real world was way different in the
actual area, students were thankful to the poultry farm technician and caretakers for the

guidance during the field practice.

Industry immersion has great significance especially to all incoming 4th year

college students since in this way they can experience an actual real-workplace related to

their specialization. It is also an opportunity for them to enhance their skills and ability on

their chosen career path. Mr. Julius N. Go, the owner of Go’s Poultry Farm was a very

down to earth person together with his poultry farm technician and caretakers. During the

conduct of industry immersion on the chosen firm, students have learned more about

operating a business such as its techniques, how they handle the operation and still

manage to become successful despite the circumstances encountered.

Conclusion

In conducting the industry immersion, the students were able to gain actual

experiences on the four functional areas of management such as firm’s organization and

management, operation, marketing and finance. In fact, this mainly “the how” a manager

pursues organizational goals, and are also known universally in the field of business. This

also entails a study of various factors that influence a business firm. Those experiences

have been encountered signifying the importance of every business operation, good

working relationships with co-workers as well as the confidentiality of information. Also,

exposing the ability to solve complex problems and greatly improve analytical and

creative skills through observation.

The set of external conditions and forces that have the potential to have an impact

on any firm make up the environment. The manager in charge of the firm needs to
understand the environment in which they operate, due to a number of factors. In this

case, as Go’s poultry farm has been operating for so long, it was not easy to make it

successful as it has a lot of competitors as well in the nearby area. Regulations relating to

health and safety must always be followed, since the firm was a trusted supplier of high-

quality eggs and contributed culled chicken in the market and surrounding areas, the

firm's normative regulatory practices helped boost their local market image by enhancing

the way they manage the business. As a result of the threat that inflation poses to their

business, most products and other resources are becoming more expensive which will

affect their income and production. Although it had a negative effect, still the firm was

able to stand out as having a supermart, grocery store, and local meat shop that gives Go's

Poultry Farm advantageous in terms of selling and marketing their product compared to

the competitors.

This analysis helps determine and identify the current strengths of the business

and develop a winning strategy for the future. Through both internal and external aspects,

it can aid the business in challenging risky presumptions and revealing harmful

inadequacies concerning the effectiveness of their organization. It can provide fresh

perspectives on where their firm is at the moment and assist them in creating the ideal

strategy for any circumstance if they use it wisely and collaboratively. Given its strengths,

a firm's operations are influenced by a variety of factors, including market power, product

innovation, and industrial policy. As with the weakness of the firm, it can not be helped

that the area looks untidy because of some wastes that turn into dirt and organism like

worms. An effective cleaning and sanitizing operation for poultry houses will reduce the
negative effects of disease, improve layer chicken's productivity and welfare, and provide

guarantees regarding food safety concerns. as with their pricing strategy, they made sure

that they offer an affordable but of a great quality of eggs and cull that was produced. In

addition to internal factors, financial management is another important aspect of running

a successful business. Since a successful firm makes money, it is possible to use that

money to compensate for things on credit and to pay employees' salaries. Therefore, in

that situation, Mr. Go makes an effort to regularly analyze the firm's financial

components in order to manage it effectively.

Then, the strategies adopted by the management of Go’s Poultry Farm was

through strong management practices, excellent customer service, maintaining strong

personal relationships with customers and farm employees, and also maintaining

effective and efficient marketing tactics. In this case, good management practices have

ruled out its importance since this helps businesses improve worker productivity,

maintain excellent customer service, and keep employees motivated that lead to better

results. Also, strong relationships are at the core of all successful marketing as it brings

the brand to life . Additionally, this gives the opportunity to make tangible, meaningful

connections with the people who matter most to its success, mainly the valued customers

and employees. By developing and establishing a coherent and well-thought-out

marketing strategy, business organizations can promote the business through acquiring

the right types of customers, and allocate resources appropriately while protecting the

business image.
Therefore, the experiences of the students enhances the ability to learn more

quickly in various jobs and exposing an actual training with safe and measurable training

in a risk-free environment. In order to become successful, Mr. Go always encourages the

students to just become positive. Also, have a good relationship with the suppliers and

customers. Additionally, Mr. Go also motivates students to believe in themselves and

always think positively that they can overcome any challenges in life. In addition, be

dedicated to the things that have been done, and be humble all the time. And most

especially, always thank God and ask for His guidance and trust him all the time.

Recommendation

We recommend the following in order to become a bigger firm and to engage

with a larger market;

1. The safety of the farm operators should be highly prioritized in the operations.

2. The old and broken floor should replace with new one.

3. The Local Government Unit should take action of repairing the farm to market

road of Barangay Bidlinan Baybay City, Leyte.

4. The firm should expand market base for other poultry farm activities.

5. The firm should expand its customer base into nearby municipalities.

6. Hire more potential people since the business firm is growing.
