DEFINITION OF TERMS (CDI 6)

1. ARSON- It is the malicious destruction of property by means of fire.


2. FIRE - it is a result of rapid chemical reaction between a fuel, heat, and oxygen.
3. FIRE EXTINGUISHER - It is a mechanical device usually made of metal, containing chemicals, fluids, or gases for stopping fires.
4. VIGILES - Firefighting unit organized by the Romans.
5. CONDUCTION - The transmission of heat through a medium or conductor, such as pipe, hot air duct, wire or even the wall.
6. SPANNER WRENCH - A tool used to tighten leaking connections and to loosen connections that are too tight.
7. PIKE HOOK - The old stand-by in manganese bronze with greater pulling through.
8. PICK - Allows the user to pry through plaster laths, dry wall.
9. BED LADDER- the lowest section of an extension ladder.
10. FLY LADDER- the top section of an extension ladder.
11. TOP OR TIP - the top of the ladder.
12. BUTT - the bottom end of a ladder.
13. HEEL - the part of the ladder that touches the ground.
14. LIQUID FUELS - Made mainly from petroleum, but some synthetic liquid fuels are also produced.
15. FLAMMABLE - liquids have a flash point below 37.80C (100° F)
16. COMBUSTIBLE - liquids have flash point at or above 37.80C (100° F)
17. REACTIVE GASES - any gases that will react within itself.
18. NON-FLAMMABLE GASES - any gases that which does not burn in air.
19. NUCLEAR FISSION - split of the nucleus of atoms.
20. NUCLEAR FUSION - combination two light nuclei of atom.
21. THERMOMETER - is the instrument used to measure temperature.
22. SUBLIMATION - changing from solid to gas.
23. MELTING - changing from solid to liquid.
24. VAPORIZATION - changing from liquid to vapor gas.
25. HEAT - A form of energy measured in degree of temperature.
26. FUEL - any substance which reacts chemically with oxygen and flames.
27. OXIDATION - a chemical change in which combustible material and an oxidizing agent react.
28. ABATEMENT - any act that would remove or neutralize a fire hazard.
29. DUCT SYSTEM - a continuous passageway for the transmission of air.
30. FULMINATE - a kind of stable explosive compound which explodes by percussion.
