Capstone strand Project capstone

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

How can we make community much safer place to live using technology?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect
to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

Nowadays in daily life, we use various types of technology. This also means that a career that
is related to technology such as programming and engineering would increase. Since I was
young I was always interested in technology. This developed me to learn programming
languages in my middle school year; consequently developed my coding ability to an extent
where I could make my own games and websites from scratch.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?

I have learned programming since grade 9, about 3 years. Throughout the time of coding I
have made 4 games using software called "Unreal Engine" and programming languages
python and java. I also made my own "Wordle" website using HTML, CSS, and java.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

I am currently applied to UBC, SFU, UofT, and many universities where they have great
engineering courses and I heard back from every Universities except for UBC. My capstone
project can portray my desire toward programming and how much I want to pursue
programming and engineering as my career after I graduate from University.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Personal Awareness & Responsibility

 I am personally responsible, self-motivated, and can advocate myself.

I had to place more of an emphasis on academic subjects because it was my final year of high
school in order to enter computer engineering. If I had homework or a test, my timetable
became more demanding because I only had 24 hours. I so began to organize my time in
order to be more productive at work. The first thing I realized was how much time I waste each
day—about four hours. I spent those four hours doing my homework and studying to correct
this. I then started spending less time watching YouTube and playing video games and more
time on my schoolwork.
Social Responsibility

 I can identify and appreciate different perspectives on issues and use and evaluate
strategies to resolve problems.
Because I value efficiency, I constantly consider it while I'm solving a problem. I gather
everyone's opinions and integrate them to find effective solutions to challenges. The problem
can be solved in a variety of ways in this fashion, and we can have a plan A and a plan B.
Additionally, if one idea has a flaw, another idea might make up for it.

 I value diversity, defend human rights, advocate for others, and act ethically in all my
interactions, including online.
To make people work efficiently the environment has to satisfy what people need. It might be
their rights or better service. Diversity is required to have a better society and is crucial.
Critical Thinking

 I can analyze and critique my work and my learning.

I constantly reflect on my mistakes and commit them to memory so that the next time I find
myself in a similar circumstance, I won't repeat them. Along with my strength, I use this. My
error caused my team to lose a game I was playing with friends, so I looked over what I had
done incorrectly and made sure not to repeat it the following time.

 I can assess my progress

I often assess my progress to make sure I am on a right track. Assessing myself through the
progress allows me to catch if I made and errors. For example, when I was doing my science
lab, I assessed myself through the progress to identify if the procedure I was following was
appropriate for the lab..
Creative Thinking

 I can persevere, and understand that failure can be productive

I always try not to repeat what I failed; however, I believe failure can provide learning
moments which can help us grow and become stronger.

1
Communication

 I can listen, learn to contribute meaningfully to discussion and debate, consider

different perspectives, and build consensus.
I like to compare other different ideas that will solve the problem best. I listen to everyone’s
ideas and build consensus so that everyone agrees with the final choice. From this process,
discussion and debate are important because we could find weaknesses in my idea or other’s
idea.

 I can reflect on the processes of learning and share what I have learned.
Reflecting on the process of learning and sharing what I have learned allows me to see what I
am doing and what I have accomplished. While writing an essay I have reflected on myself to
see if I am doing okay on it. As I read through my essay, I found that I had a weak supporting
detail. By reflecting on myself I could do better on my essay.
Personal & Cultural Identity

 I understand what is important to me.

Understanding what is important to me allows me to work and develop on what I needed. I
know that I am interested in computers and science so in the future I might get a job or go to a
university that is related. Now I can focus on studying programming because I know what is
important to me.

 I know my strength and what makes me unique.

Knowing my strength allows me to use my strength when it is needed. It benefits me if the
situation requires me to use my strength, and this makes others think that I am unique
because I can solve problems well.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to
present your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once
completed. You may use a combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT
o Physical portfolio
o Website
o imovie presentation
o YouTube channel

When I present my capstone project, I desire to use PPT and website.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.

During my capstone project I will research how to use the languages Python and JavaScript to

produce an application that can be used to keep individuals safe. First, to learn how to make

applications, I will access "Udemy" which is a major platform for learning engineering

languages. After I learned how to make an app using Python and JavaScript, I will have to find

a way so my app can send emergency calls and locations to user's choice. This can be done

my something called API, an application programming interface. I will research APIs that can

allow users to send emergency calls and send location. If I get stuck during these steps, I can

access "Stack Overflow". "Stack Overflow" provides example codes, and many professional

programmers give advice or answer the questions that are posted on the website. YouTube

videos can also allow me to learn how to import codes from other libraries and how to use

them. By this process, I desire to make an application which can make users feel safe when

travelling to foreign places or during nights when it can be frightening.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and

skills you will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to
access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail
your plans.

For this project, I need a laptop and computer that can run "visual studio code", and internet.
By the access of technology I will be able to obtain appropriate information for certain
situations by website called "GITHUB" where multiple APIs made by companies and
individuals are and a community where many engineers support one another. Then to run all
the code after writing them I will need the "visual studio code".

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will

you need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you?
What is your plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this
project?

I will need to find a mentor who knows web development and software development since I
am trying to do both back-end and front-end by myself. For instance, the mentor can help me
with the correct APIs preferred in certain situations. To access such a mentor, I will contact
companies that does both back-end and front-end and contact through email.

3
Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

Finding appropriate API for certain situation can be very struggling and the process of finding
the right source for my capstone can affect the progress to slow down.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

I primarily wanted to make an application and publish it; however, after a research I found out
that payment is required to publish apps. Also, to make an IOS application using my
knowledge of programming, it is only possible when Mac is used, but the only Mac I own is
one from 2010 which is very out dated. Therefore, I will try to make a website instead of
making application since making web pages doesn’t require any payment or specific devices
to be used.
