Introduction:

On December 8, 2019, the government of Wuhan, China, announced that health authorities were treating dozens
of new virus cases, identified as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Since then, COVID-19, a new strain of SARS (SARS-
CoV-2), has grown into a global pandemic and spreading across many countries. A highly transmissible respiratory disease,
COVID-19 spreads through contact with other infected individuals, with symptoms such as fever, cough, and breathing
problems. Transmission can also occur from asymptomatic individuals, with up to 40% of infected persons remaining
asymptomatic. Other factors that facilitate infection include speed and efficiency of COVID-19 transmission, airborne
transmission, close contact between infected and non-infected individuals, vulnerability of immunocompromised
individuals with specific underlying health conditions (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory
problems), susceptibility of persons over 65 and contact with persons who have traveled to locations with a high number
of cases.

To date, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes COVID-19 disease,
has affected 213 countries and territories around the world with 14 million cases and half a million deaths. Control efforts
worldwide led to travel bans and restrictions. In the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte placed the entire Luzon
archipelago on enhanced community quarantine on March 16, 2020. Curfew, check-points and travel restrictions were
implemented. Business and school activities were suspended indefinitely. People were forced to stay in their homes.

The current COVID-19 outbreak is a reminder that these kinds of pandemics, like other rare, occurring
catastrophes, have happened in the past and might continue to occur in the future. It currently severed the economic
consequences worldwide, and indeed, there are no countries that will be unaffected. The effects not only apply to the
economy, but all of society is affected by this pandemic, which led to a dramatic change in the business industry's flow.
This special issue is a global effort to address some of the pandemic related problems that affect society.
