THE OBJECTIVE OF THE EXPERIMENT
The objective of the experiment was to determine the torsional rigidity, G of solid
and hollow circular shafts, and the torsional constant J of a square and a circular
specimen with slits down their lengths.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS USED

• HDA200 torsion apparatus
• Standard size hollow square and circular shaft

EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE

• The Ø4.74mm shaft was fit between the chucks of the torsion apparatus.

• The gauge length was then recorded.

• The handwheel on the HDA200 apparatus was turned until the lever hammer

just touched the load sensor.

• The HDA200 interface display was zeroed out and the no-load force and the

angle were recorded.

• The handwheel was turned in increments of a force of 1N to 10Nand the

respective angles were recorded.

\DISCUSSION OF THEORY
For square cross section
The graph shows the
graph of force vs angle of twist forces that were applied
12 to the specimen and the
10
respective angle of
twists. The graph shows
8 a linear relationship
6 between the force
applied (as a matter of
4
fact, the torque applied)
2 and the angle of twist.
Using the expression
0 𝑇𝐿

𝐺𝐽
Actual twist represents the angle of
twist, T the torque, L

the length of the specimen, we see the slope of the graph as T/Ø. J is the torsion
constant given by the expression 𝐽 = 𝜋 𝑑4. The quantity G is also defined as the
shear modulus of rigidity of the
32
specimen.
DATA
Diameter of the specimen d = Ø4.74mm
Guage length (L) = 300mm

CONCLUSIONS

The experiment was successful and the objective was achieved. It can also be
concluded from the experiment that in the elastic region, most materials will
deform linearly with the force (torque) applied on them.

PRECAUTIONS

• The handwheel was turned gently to record precise values from the HDA200
apparatus
• The specimen was firmly gripped in the chucks of the apparatus to avoid
overestimation of recorded values.

• The no-load angle of twist was recorded and subtracted from the recorded
angles to obtain the precise angle of twists
