  3B  Future plans and
schedules
Aims:  To review and practise the present continuous,
present simple and present perfect to talk about the
future.
Time:  10–15 minutes
Materials: One handout for each student

Exercise 1
• Give each student a handout and ask them to work
individually or in pairs to select the correct options for
each sentence. Remind them, if necessary, that we use
the present simple for timetabled events and in time
clauses after certain conjunctions, for example, in case,
until, when, before, after and as soon as.
• Check answers with the class.
KEY
1  starts
2  does your train leave
3  ’m meeting
4  calls
5  are you doing
6  doesn’t start
7  aren’t eating
8  ’s spending

Exercise 2
• Students read the sentences and complete them with
the correct form of the verbs in brackets. Point out that
sometimes there may be more than one answer, but
they should use the present perfect where possible.
• Check answers by asking different students to read out
a completed sentence in turn.
KEY
1  answers  2  ’ve replied   3  ’ve read
4  ’ve spoken   5  gets  6  ’ve finished
7  need  8  go

Exercise 3
• Students complete their timetables individually with
activities, leaving three times free. They then work in
pairs and try to find a time when they are both free to
meet up.
• Go through the example dialogue with the class first,
asking two confident students to read it out. Students
then work in pairs, asking and answering about their
plans for the day.
