Sheikh Mujibur Rahman the unfinished Memoirs background

Inspired by his wife, Fazilatunnesa Mujib, Mujib started writing his autobiography in his

notebooks during his sojourns in jail as a state prisoner between 1967 and 1969.

Later Mujib gave the notebooks to Moni to prepare a typed copy. But after the assassination of

Sheikh Mujib and Sheikh Fazlul Haq Moni, the notebooks slid in oblivion and remained so until

one of his relatives discovered four notebooks in a drawer of Sheikh Moni in 2004.[3] By then,

the notebooks' pages became discolored and brittle.

Mr Suhrawardy' how he became to be acquainted with him. How he

had become intimate with him. How he taught him the essentials of political

life and how I came to earn his love.

However, Renu use to bring note book for him and use to give those to the jailer. He was confused

whether he can write the book perfectly or not. Also thinking that if he can correctly note all the dates

of the memories. Basically we can say he was procrastinating before writing the autobiography. Because

he was not a professional writer. But his wife Renu helped him to start the autobiography eventually

and always use to remind him giving the note books.

Afterwards, he starts with his birth place Tungipara village of Gopalganj where it placed and how his

family is known in the region. He mentioned a name here Sheikh Borhanuddin maybe his great

grandfather who was very religious. And also he mentions about the 4 old buildings which he mentions

apart from his family came from Mughal. Also he gives the description of the buildings. However, No

one exactly knows where Sheikh Borhanuddin came from made him decide to live on the banks of the
Modhumati. The buildings are 200 years old and There were no records three or four generations. But

there were info about Borhanuddin’s two sons Qudratullah and Ekramulla. As far as I can tell everyone is

descendants of these two brothers. Qudaratullah was a businessman acquainted with East India

company and Ekramullah was a leader of men in social justice in the locality.

Afterwards, there was an Englishman called Mr. Rayan who began to plant indigo and build cottage also

He would seize not only the boats of the Sheikhs but also those of other people. If anyone attempted to

resist him, he would punish them brutally. Everyone knows how vicious the Englishmen of that period

were. And obviously Sheikh Stands against it and there was a big clash between them, they literary had

to pay an amount of money to make Mr. Rayan guilty maybe that’s how the justice works at that time.

So, Qudratullah humiliated Mr. Rayan by giving him poisha and it got so famous that there is a song on

it. Interesting thing is Sheikh Mujib get know this story from and old man while he was going to Bagerhat

with advocate Zillur Rahman.

However, when sheikh’s wealth and property gradually diminished then Rani Rasmoni became the

zamidar and declared war against Sheikh’s. Sheikh Asimuddin use to look after the Calcutta property and

trading. So somehow they defeated Rani Rasmoni and there was a formidable man named tamizuddin

who was captured by sheikhs after which it was believed that he died in custody. Because of this all

sheikhs got arrested and they had to spent fortune to get out. However, there was a distant relative of

sheikhs named Kazis, half of their family was the side of Rani Rasmoni. Moreover, they also went against

the sheikhs but the majority of their family was with sheikhs. Then sirajtulla kazi’s sons killed their own

father and left the body on the roof of sheikh. Afterwards The Sheilh’s has faced lots of problems with

the murder case also it dragged too much which made them bankrupt. And then the interesting part is

there was a CID who discovered the killer of Sirajtulla kazi, with the conversation of their son, because of

that the Sheikh were released but by then they have lost everything.
Then Sheikh Mujib says who is his father in law who is also his unlce and how Renu (his wife) faced

problems with the property. However, the Sheikh family were getting back dated because of not

learning English. But they started to learn English also their family got a bit separated and when all of his

grandfather died his father was in tight spot since he had become responsible for his family.

However, there are so many details so let me jump to one his grandfather for whom they stared to learn

English and for that Sheikh Abdul Rashid got the tile Khan Saheb. and he had to struggle for job because

of Muslims are having tough time.

When Sheikh Mujib finished his college he got married in 13 years old age because of his father’s

command. There are so many reasons to get the inheritance and all that’s why also Renu has no one left

and she started to live with his family that also can be the reason of this marriage.
