GetEQUAL California Announces "Don't Ask Don't Tell Repeal: Mission Incomplete" -A Demonstration for Full LGBT Equality
Organizations Call on LGBT Community and Allies to Gather at 6:30 pm (PT), 9/20/2011, in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, CA GetEQUAL California -- a state branch of the national direct action organization GetEQUAL, dedicated to working toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights through bold action -- will hold a DADT Repeal: Mission Incomplete! demonstration to recognize the day that the military policy, Don't Ask Don't Tell, will become a part of America's past. They will be calling for full LGBT equality, and, more specifically, the need for a non-discrimination policy and transgender protections for our LGBT service members. The demonstration will give the LGBT community and their allies an opportunity to gather together in unity as they raise the urgency for civil rights and demand full equality now. GetEQUAL organizer Dennis Veite notes: "As we've seen from the difficult battle to get Dont Ask Dont Tell repealed, nothing comes easy for us and the work for full LGBT equality will continue. We gather to celebrate the significance of this day but also to call on President Obama to issue an executive order that includes protections for our transgender brothers and sisters and a non-discrimination policy for all our LGBT service members whose partners are still denied the same benefits that heterosexual partners enjoy. History has taught us that separate is not equal and while DADT is gone, we will fight on." WHAT: Demonstration DADT Repeal: Mission Incomplete" WHO: GetEQUAL and GetEQUAL CA WHEN: 6:30PM 8:30PM on Tuesday September 20th, 2011 WHERE: Harvey Milk Plaza - Castro District, San Francisco With DADT officially dead and the outcome of Prop 8 expected in the coming months, supporters and allies from the LGBT community will gather together in their call for full LGBT equality now, says Billy Bradford, GetEQUAL Activist. With the majority of Americans now supporting the extension of marriage rights, there is no reason to delay or deny full equality to ALL LGBT Americans. While the fight for full LGBT equality continues, we remind our leaders that without government support and protections the LGBT community is at greater risk for hate crimes, bullying, suicides and homelessness. We expect our elected officials to do the right thing by protecting the civil liberties of their entire constituency. Attendees are encouraged to bring signs and their voices to demonstrate their passion and claim to full equality.
