3-1 Activity: Logo Usage Rules

1. Define the rules for using the logo. Include the following details in your response:

A. Rotation: Should rotation be allowed? Yes, for the last three, but the one in color

shouldn’t really be rotated.

B. Clear space: How much clear space must be maintained around the logo? The

minimum spacing requirement is 0.25 inches and should always be used when

placing the primary or sub-brand logos into a printed design. In printed materials,

the logo should be at least 0.25 inches in height.

C. Scale: What is the minimum size the logo can be scaled down to? Ultimately the

minimum size for a logo should be at 1-inch wide to maintain, but as 3/4″ wide

length as these are commonly the smallest sizes at which most logos will be used.

D. Transparency: Can the transparency of the logo be altered? If it’s needed, yes, the

transparency can be altered.

E. Contrast: Which color and font combinations should be maintained? The primary

colors of the first logo should be kept to matching and the same.

F. Color variations for placement: Which logo variation should be used in various

mediums? The full color logo would work best.

2. Create a total of three illustrated examples that show how the rules should be applied to

the logo. Use Adobe Illustrator to create examples of dos and don’ts for each of the

following elements. Then, export the illustrated examples to the main InDesign file for

submission.
A. Clear space

B. Scale

C. Color variations for placement

3. Outline the four most important things to avoid when placing the logo in documents.

Consider the following questions to guide your response:

A. What is the ideal placement for the logo when working on a document? The

middle.

B. In what circumstances can the logo be altered? Adding effects, more clear space

and proper placement of the star.

4. Outline the four most important things to avoid when placing the logo on images.

Consider the following questions to guide your response:

A. What is the ideal placement for the logo when working on an image? It should be

placed in the middle or the left side of the logo because that’s where the eyes will

go first.

B. What special effects can be added to the logo when working with images? Drop

shadows, thick outlines, and gaussian blur.

C. Which color variation of the logo should be avoided when working with images?

Pure black, red and green, neon colors, light colors on white or detailed

backgrounds and bright colors with more bright colors

5. Save the InDesign file as a PDF.
