Text A
One bright day in late autumn, a family of Ants were bustling about in the warm
sunshine. They were drying out the grain they had stored up during the summer,
when a starving Grasshopper, his fiddle* under his arm, came up and humbly
begged for a bite to eat.
‘What!’ cried the Ants in surprise. ‘Haven’t you stored anything away for the 5
winter? What in the world were you doing all last summer?’
‘I didn’t have time to store up any food,’ whined the Grasshopper; ‘I was so busy
making music that before I knew it the summer was gone.’
‘Making music, were you?’ they cried. ‘Very well; now dance!’ And they turned 10
their backs on the Grasshopper and went on with their work.

Text B, Part 2
Scene two:

Grasshopper: I’m frozen and starving; perhaps my friends the squirrels will feed
me. Squirrels! Squirrels! Will you please feed me? (The squirrels scamper
towards him.)
Squirrels: Oh no, we’ll not feed you. (They hop back to stage right.)
Storyteller 1: The grasshopper was so very cold and hungry. He didn’t know 30
what to do. (Grasshopper is shivering and rubbing his stomach.) Then he thought
of the ants. (The ants move to the centre of the stage.)
Grasshopper: Ants! Ants! Please feed me. (The ants listen to the grasshopper,
then turn around.)
Storyteller 2: The ants thought about it and decided to give him some food. 35
(Both ants face the grasshopper.)
Ant 1: You must promise that you’ll work hard next summer if we give you some
food.
Storyteller 1: That summer the grasshopper kept his promise and worked hard 40
to collect food for the following winter. (Grasshopper mimes digging with the
