JT8D MAINTENANCE ADVISORY NOTICE

SUBJECT:
FIRST STAGE FAN BLADE REFURBISHMENT INTERVAL

MODEL APPLICATION:
JT8D-9, —9A, —11, —15, —17, —17R

DESCRIPTION/PURPOSE:

The purpose of this Maintenance Advisory Notice (MAN) is to recommend a leading

edge fan blade refurbishment interval to minimize fan blade root fractures
caused by increased vibratory stress. The increased vibratory stress is the
result of engine operation with eroded and blunt leading edges on the fan
blades.
In addition to leading edge refur bishment, periodic maintenance of the entire
fan blade is recommended. This includes shot peening of the root, bead peening
of the airfoil, reapplication of anti—gallant on the root, and chord width
check.

BACKGROUND:
Since 1987 there have been thirteen (13) fan blade root fractures on the —9,
— 9A, — 11, — 15, — 17,
and 17R Engine Models. Four (4) resulted in engine case
penetrat ion and two (2) of those result ed in cowl penetrat ions. The pr imary
cause of these root fractures is eroded and blunt leading edges that produce
increased vibratory stress in the root and airfoil.
The primary cause of leading edge erosion is the operating environment. Rain is
the most common contributor, but also sand can contribute to erosion. Over time,
material is removed from the leading edges, leaving them blunt. The aerodynamic
performance of the blade is diminished and vibratory stress in the airfoil and
root is increased. Leading edge refurbishment per Reference 2, Engine Manual,
Repair-10, will provide the proper leading edge geometry and restore the blades'
aerodynamic performance.

RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE ACTION:
This maintenance recommendation must be performed off—wing.
The Maintenance Advisory Notice is a Pratt & Whitney instruction, not a
mandate, which is a result of the best available infor mation. It is recommended
t h a t t h e o p e r a t o r s c h e d u l e t h e p r o c e d u r e i n t h i s N o t i c e a t t h e in d i c a t e d t im e s .
Pratt and Whitney recommends for the JT8D engines you perform total fan blade
refurbishment (i.e. overhaul) as described in Reference 2, Engine Manual,
Chapter/Section 72-33-21, Insp-00 at the next shop visit after 4000 cycles since
t h e l a s t f a n b l a d e r e f u r b i s h m e n t . I f t h e c y c l e s s i n c e la s t r e f u r b is h m e n t c a n n o t

BENEFITS:
Refurbishment of the blade leading edge will restore the aerodynamic performance
of the blade and also reduce the vibratory stress in the blade root.

APPROVAL:
The maintenance specified in this Maintenance Advisory Notice has been shown to
comply with applicable Federal Aviation Regulations and is FAA—Approved for the
engine model(s) listed.
