Link and manage various file formats

Link Revit models and control the positioning of


the link. Discover how to link other file formats
and manage linked files, and see the difference
between linking and importing files.

1. Start a new project using the default


architectural template default.rte.

2. In the Insert tab, Link panel, click Link
Revit.

3. In the Import/Link RVT dialog, select


linked_model.rvt. Then in the
Positioning drop-down, select Auto –
Internal Origin to Internal Origin.

4. Enable the appropriate selection
settings and then select the linked
model in the drawing area. Drag the
link slightly to simulate accidentally
moving a linked model.

5. With the link selected, right-click to


display the shortcut menu and select
Reposition to Internal Origin.

6. With the link still selected, click Pin on
the contextual ribbon tab. Then
deselect the linked model.

7. Type VG to open the Visibility/Graphic


Overrides dialog. Be aware that a Revit
Links tab now appears. On that tab,
click By Host View next to the linked
model.

8. In the RVT Link Display Settings dialog,


in the Basics tab, select Custom. Then
on the Model Categories tab, expand
the drop-down and select Custom. This
allows you to control the visibility and
graphic display of model categories
separate from the host model.

9. In the Insert tab, Links panel, click
Manage Links.

10. In the Manage Links dialog, select the


linked model by clicking the file name
in the Link Name column. Now the
other controls become available to
reload the link, unload the link, or
remove it. Additionally, be aware that
Add allows you to link additional
models while working in this dialog.
