CHAPTER I
Introduction to 21 Century Literacies
st
0. Compare & contrast the traditional concept of literacy to the modern view of
literacy.
Traditional Literacy- is the integration of listening, speaking, reading,
writing and critical thinking.
Model view of Literacy- refer to the ways the language-based processes
of reading, writing and digital communication are integrated in acts of
making and sharing meaning.
0. Describe the changes in the 21 century that have led to the rise of new
st
literacies.
In the 21st century, literacy skills increasingly reflect technology use and the
abilities necessary to problem-solve, collaborative, and present information
through multimedia. As technology becomes more readily available to all
students, concepts of literacy change.
0. What teaching strategies and forms of assessment could you use to help
develop functional literacy?
I think cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small
teams, each with students of different levels of ability, use a variety of
learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject. It could be use
to help develop functional literacy because cooperative learning is
characterised by positive interdependence, where students perceive that
better performance by individuals produces better performance by the entire
group.

Globalization and Cultural and Multicultural Literacies
4. Interview students in your school or in your community who are part of the other
culture. They could be foreigners or fellow Filipinos who belong to a different ethno-
linguistic group. Ask them about their culture, their difficulties in adjusting to the
mainstream culture, and how students like you can help them. (You may use social
media in gathering info, please provide photo)

CHAPTER III
Social Literacy
Positive Impacts:
Speed and Efficiency- Mobile technology makes it easy to get or to keep
contact information in a mobile device.
Communication Log- Technology has made it easy to keep extended
communication logs. Emails and texts are easily tracked to confirm what was
discussed in previous correspondence.
Mobile Workers- Technology has transferred the workforce into a mobile
workforce. People can work from home or anywhere in the world.
Negative Impacts:
Lack of Relationship Building- Technology has reduced the amount of face-
to-face interaction on the number of actual telephone conversations that people
have.
Informal Communication- Traditional written correspondence such as letters
via postal mail is usually more professional in format and tone, while email
and texting can show a lower standard of professionalism.
Less Comfortable with non digital Conversations- When most of your
communications are virtual, two things happen. You get used to being in
constant state of control, and you lose your ability to be vulnerable.
Make a list of Dos and Don’ts in the school and the workplace in relation to social
literacy. Present it creatively through an infographic.
