CONSULTING SERVICES DEPARTMEN Dhahran E-7280 ¢ Tel: 874-6116 # Fax: 873-8351 June 19, 2006 PIPING UPGRADES FOR NEW & EXISTING B. F. ALQADRAN, Manager Hawiyah Gas Plant Department R201, Admin Bldg Hawi #1 ALSALILL Ms Haradh Gas Plant Department RIDA, Admin Bldg Varadh CSD recommends the upgrading of gas wellhead piping subject to flow-induced CO, corrosion This upgrade involves using Inconel 625 clad material for the first two piping spools downstream of the wellhead wing valve with the corrosion inhibitor injection point being located in the second spool. As there are thirty five (35) existing wells with the corrosion inhibitor injection point located about 50 meters downstream of the wellhead, it is also recommended that on these ‘sells the corrosion inhibitor injection point be relocated to the second spool. which is approximately 3 meters downstream of the wellhead, All HdGP wells and a number of HGP, SGP and UGP wells with less than 100 ppm H:S produce gas that subjects them and the facilities downstream to the flow-induced COp corrosion. This letter will address: «Recent corrosion experience in both Haradh and Hawiyah gas wells = Cause of the corrosion + Recommendations to minimize corrosion damage in the future Recent corrosion experience Recent experience has shown very aggressive flow-induced sweet gas corrosion in carbon steel piping on 15 HdGP wells and 14 HGP wells. On one HaGP well, the intemal pipe corrosion resulted in a gas release with significant plant feed interruption required to replace the corroded spools. Corrosion of both the pipe wall and the sealing ring in Grayloc fittings has been observed. Cause of the corrosion \ COs Team comprised of engineers from CSD and SAGO was formed in late March of this vear to review Saudi Aramco experience with swect corrosion to date and to evaluate current Sweet corrosion management practices. The recent flowline corrosion was an agenda item in a a Geriesner HiCzrep FIPING UPGRADES FOR NEW & EXISTING GAS WELLS SUBJECT T0.CO, CORROSION Jean meeting held in Udhailiyah on May 2 The Team inspected a corroded ring joint from tone of the well flowlines, was briefed by Inspection, and the MEU engineers performing failure analysis reported their findings. The Team conclusion is that flow-induced CO; corrosion is, causing the corrosion damage, Recommendations As a result of the Team evaluation, the Team recommends that the first two piping spools downstream of the gas wellhead wing valve should be internally clad with Inconel 625 for corrosion resistance, ‘The corrosion inhibitor injection point should be located at the 2” spool. XI piping futher downstream of the corrosion inhibitor injection point may be carbon steel This recommendation applies to both the upgrade of all existing gas wells subject to sweet gas comosion and for new gas well (Rev. 4 & 5) construction. Implementation of this proposal will significantly improve wellsite safety, maximize well ailability and reduce future maintenance costs Ii further information is required, please contact Bob Palmer or Hojin Choi at 874-5028 and 873- S083, respectively.
