History of Volleyball
- In 1895, William G. Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in
Holyoke, Massachusetts. He decided to blend elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball to
create a game called Mintonette for his classes of businessmen which would demand less physical
contact than basketball.
- However, Alfred Halstead, a professor from Springfield College in Massachusetts later renamed it to
volleyball because the objective of the game was to volley the ball back and forth over the net.
- Volleyball quickly gained popularity among various YMCA branches in the States and it was
subsequently spread to other parts of the world during the World War I by the American troops. Since,
it is not a very vigorous sport, women also took interest in the sport and started playing Volleyball.
- The history of volleyball in the Philippines dates back to 1910. The Physical Director of the YMCA,
Elwood S. Brown, first introduced volleyball to the Philippines. It started as a backyard sport then
played along the island beaches. They have to find coconut trees opposite each other where they can
hang their net.

the net to land inside the lines of the court. A serve starts every point in volleyball and is among
one of the most important aspects of the game. Because rally scoring is used, a team can lose
points if a player is unable to serve the ball over the net and inside the opponent's court.
2. Pass – a served ball or any ball coming from opponent’s side is received or stopped by the
other team with the hands. The pass in Volleyball is known as a “bump” or a “forearm pass”
because it is performed using the forearms to bump the ball. Passing is a very important skill
in volleyball.
3. Set – is usually the second contact with the ball by the team which is done to prepare for an
attack into the opponent’s court
4. Spike/Attack – it is usually the third contact a team makes the ball. An attack is any ball that is
sent over the net to the opponent. It is an offensive action of hitting the ball, attempting to
terminate the play by hitting the ball to the floor on the opponent’s side or off the opponent’s
blockers.
5. Block – refers to the actions taken by the players standing at the net to stop or alter an
