Title:
State the purpose of the experimental investigation
Research question:
For example:
How the voltage of the cells in a circuit affects the current in the circuit.
How the resistance in a circuit affects the current in the circuit.
Independent Variable: The thing you will change. Only one
Dependent Variable: The thing you will measure. Only one
Controlled Variable: The thing(s) you will keep same. Could be more than one
Background research:
Write a short concise introduction that explains the background science and relevance of
the experiment in the context of the wider world, suggest any possible applications of the
experimental results.
Write a scientific explanation for why you think the I.V. and the D.V. are connected, why the
other variables should be controlled and mention any other research or observations that
relate to this explanation.
Hypothesis:
State your hypothesis.
Explain your hypothesis state your scientific reasoning even if mentioned already in the
background.
Make a prediction based upon your hypothesis, what do you expect to see and why?
If… then….
If changing IV, then DV will……
Explain your prediction. (Use background science from above)
Method:
A short general guide for your experiment about 3-5 lines, include the IV, DV and the
method you will use. How many repeats for each test?
For the IV, explain what you are going to change in the experiment and how you are going
to measure it. Say how accurate these measurements will be.
For the DV, explain what you are going to measure in the experiment and how you are
going to measure it. Say how accurate these measurements will be.
Ideally, six sets of data for IV, DV should be collected during the experiment.
For the control variables, explain how you will measure them. How you will hold them
constant.
Diagram:
Insert the picture and name of the equipment you are going to use.
Safety:
Explain how you intend to make sure that your experiment is conducted safely.
Consider any of the possible risks or hazards that might arise while conducting your
experiment and the safety precautions you might take to prevent them. Refer to any of
the relevant CLEAPPS HazCards.
Concider from the factors below:
CHEMICAL (Serious / Moderate / Mild)
PHYSICAL (Heat / Electrical / Movement / Optical)
BIOLOGICAL (Allergy / Biohazard)
GLASSWARE
SHARPS
Set-up:
How would you set up the equipment and resources you need for the experiment?
Show a picture of the apparatus when it is set up for the experiment.
Procedure:
Write a simple set of instructions that would allow a student in a younger year group, to
carry out the experiment and get the same results.
1. Use numbered bullet points for the method. Make sure your steps are in the
correct order.
2. *
3. *
Results:
Correctly collect, organize, transform and present data in numerical and/ or visual
forms
Data table: Include your results table (you can copy from excel).
Your table should be clear and contain all the information.
Include you transformed results.
Conclusion:
Discuss the validity of a hypothesis based on the outcome of a scientific
investigation
Was your hypothesis correct? How can you tell from your data? Are you sure?
Evaluation:
Discuss the validity of the method based on the outcome of a scientific investigation
Was your method good? How can you tell from your data? Are you sure?
Extensions:
Describe improvements or extensions to the method that would benefit the scientific
investigation.
How can you improve the method
How would you not make the mistakes you mention above?
Could you get more data (Hint you can always say: “I would do more repeats”)
Could you find out anything else about the investigation, maybe investigate a different IV?
