ABSTRACT

This study determined the role of parents in promoting children’s health in

the Integrated School of Batangas State University. Specifically, this study

identified the profile of the parent-respondents in terms of age, sex, educational,

attainment, occupation, and family monthly income. It also looked into the way

the parents promote the health of the children in terms of choice and preparation

of foods, sleep, and physical activity and its significant relationship to the profile

of parent-respondents. As an output, an action plan was created to help and

improve the parents’ ways in promoting their children’s health.

The descriptive design was used by the researchers with the questionnaires

as the main data gathering instrument. This tool was given to the parents of the

children of the Integrated School of Batangas State University as respondents. In

order to interpret the data, the researchers used the weighted mean, frequency and

percentage and f-value test.

Findings revealed that majority of the parent-respondents are middle age,

high school graduates, housewives, and receive a family monthly income ranging

from Php 10,000.00 to Php 19,999.00. In the choice and preparation of foods,

parents always encourage their children to drink more water. Parents always make

sure their child was physically clean before going to bed. In the physical activity,

parents often find fun physical activity for their child. Parents’ ways to promote

children’s health had no significant relationship with their profiles. The most

common health problem of the children is fever.

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR1 SY 2022-2023

It is being recommended that the suggested action plan be utilized for the

promotion of the health of the children in the Integrated School of Batangas State

University. Another recommendation is to conduct similar studies with different

focal points like other schools, places, and benefactors to enhance and improve

the study that can be utilized to promote the health not just of children but also

other people.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR1 SY 2022-2023

This chapter reveals the research methods to be used by the researcher in

conducting the study, which include the research design, study subjects, data

gathering instrument, data gathering procedures, and appropriate statistical

treatment of data.

Research Design

Research is an important way to get new facts or additional information.

In this research, there are certain activities that must be performed. In this case,

methodology is necessarily needed to make the research easy to conduct or to be

effective. In this study, the researcher uses the descriptive method of research to

assess the role of the parents’ in promoting the children’s health in the Integrated

School of Batangas State University.

Descriptive research design is concerned with the present and attempts to

determine the status of the phenomenon under investigation. It is designed for the

investigator to gather information about present existing conditions. The principal

aims in employing this method are to describe the nature of a situation as it exists

at the time of the study and to explore the phenomena (Aquino, 2019).

Subjects of the Study

The subjects of the study were students from grade 12 enrolled in the

Asian institute of computer studies. The respondents were total of 50 sample

students randomly from the Grade 12 senior high school from its total population.

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR1 SY 2022-2023

This study used a simple random sampling technique which method used

to cull a smaller sample size from a larger population and use it to research and

generalize about the larger group. It is one of several methods statisticians and

researchers use to extract a sample from a larger population. Researchers generate

a simple random sample by obtaining an exhaustive list of a larger population and

then selecting, at random, a certain number of individuals to comprise the sample.

With a simple random sample, every member of the larger population has an

equal chance of being selected.

Table 1 shows the distribution of the parent-respondents in the Integrated

School of Batangas State University. The present study is conducted to determine

the role of parents in promoting the health of the children in Integrated School of

Batangas State University.

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR1 SY 2022-2023

It can be gleaned from the table above that Kinder 1 had 5 respondents

while Kinder 2 had 5 respondents. Grade 1 had 5 parent-respondents, Grade 2 had

6 respondents, and Grade 3 had 5 parent respondents. Moreover, Grade 4, 5, and 6

has 8, 6, and 5 parent-respondents. All in all, there are a total of 50 respondents in

answering the questionnaires about the role of parents in promoting children’s

health in Integrated School of Batangas State University.

C. Data gathering Instruments

The researcher-made questionnaire was utilized as the main tool in

gathering the needed data. It has three parts: first part was denoted to the

respondents’ profile in terms of age, sex, educational attainment, occupation, and

family monthly income. The second part is the parents’ promotion of health to

their children in terms of choice and preparation of food, sleep, and physical

activity and the third part is on the common health problems of the children.

Construction. The researchers gathered some references that are relevant to the

study from several books, theses and similar references. The questionnaire that

was be used is constructing by the researchers based on information from books,

thesis, internet, magazines, and observation.

The researchers prepared a preliminary draft of the questionnaire that was

presented to the adviser for item improvement.

Validation. The final draft of the questionnaire that was presented to the adviser

for content validation was submitted to the practitioners to establish the content

validity.

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR1 SY 2022-2023

Administration. The researchers asked permission from the head teacher of the

Integrated School through a letter noted by the adviser. After getting the

permission, the researchers approached the parents and asked them to answer the

questionnaire.

Retrieval. After the respondents have completed the questionnaire, the data will

be collected from the Google form and printed for scoring.

Scoring. To interpret the information, responses were rated using the following

assign points.

4 3.50 – 4.00 Always

3 2.50 – 3.49 Often

2 1.50-2.49 Seldom

1 1.00-1.49 Never

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers drafted a letter of request to the head teacher at the

Integrated School, asking for the permission to conduct this study. After getting

the approval of the head teacher, the copies of the questionnaire were distributed

personally to the parents.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical tools were utilized to treat and give meaning to

the data gathering.

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR1 SY 2022-2023

Weighted mean. This was used to determine the average mean of items in each

category and to know the respondents’ view on the variables of the study. It can

be more useful than a regular average because it offers more nuance. It reduces

the weight of data that is less important, allowing more material data to have a

more significant effect on the result. You can also use it to correct for deficiencies

in a dataset Robinhood (2022).

Frequency and percentage. These were used to quantify the demographic

variables of the respondents. They are especially useful when making

comparisons, but they are also useful when studying a difference compared.

CHAPTER IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND DATA INTERPRETATION

This chapter deals with the presentation analysis and interpretation of data

gathered from the questionnaire. Each set of data was analyzed and interpreted in

the context of the problem presented in the study.

1. Profile of the Parent-Respondents

The present study investigated the profile of the parent-respondents in

terms of age, sex, educational attainment, and family monthly income.

1.1 Profile of parent-respondents in terms of Age. The researchers saw

this as a significant part of the study to determine the roles of parents in

promoting children’s health regarding their sex. This helps the researchers to take

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR1 SY 2022-2023

into the consideration of the parent-respondents sex in giving light and depth to

the present undertaking. Table 3 demonstrates the profile of the parent-

respondents in terms of sex with its frequency and percentage.

Table 1
Profile of Parent-Respondents in terms of Age
Age Frequency Percentage

Below 36 years old 23 46%

36 – 55 years old 7 14%
Above 55 years old 20 40%
Total 50 100%

It can be seen from the table that majority of the parent-respondents are

female with 42 or 84 percent of the total population of respondents while 8 or 16

percent of the total population are male. It implies that females are more active in

taking part in the children’s promotion of health. It is supported by the concept of

Marc H. Bornstein (2018) which gave the significant relationship between the sex

of parents in promoting children’s health where female is more active in taking

part in the children’s promotion of health. Mother is good in parenting, and it is

really distinct for her. She provides the care for children where she is the one who

is responsible for the affection and basic needs of the child. The father is the one

who provides the financial of the whole family needs to support the necessity of

the children.

Basically, the mother really acts as the one who takes care of every

child by providing them the necessity that is important while growing up. This is

reflected into our society in which females are most babysitters that parents hire
AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR1 SY 2022-2023
to take care of their children when they cannot do their role as parent. Mother as a

feminine is more suite in handling the child since they are more soft and patient

because parenting is really something that needs a lot of patience.

1.2 Profile of parent-respondents in terms of age. Becoming a

parent at any age has the challenges that may encounter and has their own

set of benefits. There’s a factor that is unique to each parent depending on

the situations and their background also plays a critical role as a parent.

Age of parents included to know how it affects the parents’ performance.

The researchers deemed this as a vital part of the study to determine the

roles of parents in promoting children’s health with regards to their age

range. Table 2 shows the profile of the parent- respondents in terms of age

with its frequency and percentage. This helps the researchers to consider

age in giving light and depth to the present undertaking.

Table 2
Profile of Parent-Respondents in terms of Age

Age Frequency Percentage

Below 36 years old 23 46%

36 – 55 years old 7 14%
Above 55 years old 20 40%
Total 50 100%

It can be seen from the table that majority of the parents are aged 36

to 55 years old with 23 or 46 percent on the overall response of the parent-

respondents. This implies that most parents in the Integrated School of

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR1 SY 2022-2023

Batangas State University are middle aged. Parent-respondents below 36

years old had 7 or 14 percent of the total response.

This implies that parents below 36 years old are nearing the

percentage of most parent-respondents regarding age. Moreover, 20 or forty

percent of the population are above 55 years old. This implies that there are

a few parent-respondents who are late adults. All in all, there are 220

parents-respondents of the study and majority of them were in their middle

adulthood. These ages obviously, gives more support in taking care of their

children. Parents respondent always bring food for their child instead of

giving money to buy their own food. This shows that parents at older gives

more importance on the health of their children and capable of providing

better way of parenting as supported by the concept of Kendra Cherry

(2018) popular wisdom always say that younger parents have more energy

to take care of their children on the other hand much older parents have

more experiences and resources that needs to take care of a child.
