CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter reveals the research methods to be used by the researcher in

conducting the study, which include the research design, study subjects, data

gathering instrument, data gathering procedures, and appropriate statistical

treatment of data.

Research Design

Research is an important way to get new facts or additional information.

In this research, there are certain activities that must be performed. In this case,

methodology is necessarily needed to make the research easy to conduct or to be

effective. In this study, the researcher uses the descriptive method of research to

assess the role of the parents’ in promoting the children’s health in the Integrated

School of Batangas State University.

Descriptive research design is concerned with the present and attempts to

determine the status of the phenomenon under investigation. It is designed for the

investigator to gather information about present existing conditions. The principal

aims in employing this method are to describe the nature of a situation as it exists

at the time of the study and to explore the phenomena (Aquino, 2019).

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR3/THESIS SY 2022-2023

Subjects of the Study

The subjects of the study were students from grade 12 enrolled in the

Asian institute of computer studies. The respondents were total of 50 sample

students randomly from the Grade 12 senior high school from its total population.

This study used a simple random sampling technique which method used

to cull a smaller sample size from a larger population and use it to research and

generalize about the larger group. It is one of several methods statisticians and

researchers use to extract a sample from a larger population. Researchers generate

a simple random sample by obtaining an exhaustive list of a larger population and

then selecting, at random, a certain number of individuals to comprise the sample.

With a simple random sample, every member of the larger population has an

equal chance of being selected.

Table 1 shows the distribution of the parent-respondents in the Integrated

School of Batangas State University. The present study is conducted to determine

the role of parents in promoting the health of the children in Integrated School of

Batangas State University.

Grade 2 6

Grade 3 5

Grade 4 8

Grade 5 6

Grade 6 5

It can be gleaned from the table above that Kinder 1 had 5 respondents

while Kinder 2 had 5 respondents. Grade 1 had 5 parent-respondents, Grade 2 had

6 respondents, and Grade 3 had 5 parent respondents. Moreover, Grade 4, 5, and 6

has 8, 6, and 5 parent-respondents. All in all, there are a total of 50 respondents in

answering the questionnaires about the role of parents in promoting children’s

health in Integrated School of Batangas State University.

C. Data gathering Instruments

The researcher-made questionnaire was utilized as the main tool in

gathering the needed data. It has three parts: first part was denoted to the

respondents’ profile in terms of age, sex, educational attainment, occupation, and

family monthly income. The second part is the parents’ promotion of health to

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR3/THESIS SY 2022-2023

their children in terms of choice and preparation of food, sleep, and physical

activity and the third part is on the common health problems of the children.

Construction. The researchers gathered some references that are relevant to the

study from several books, theses and similar references. The questionnaire that

was be used is constructing by the researchers based on information from books,

thesis, internet, magazines, and observation.

The researchers prepared a preliminary draft of the questionnaire that was

presented to the adviser for item improvement.

Validation. The final draft of the questionnaire that was presented to the adviser

for content validation was submitted to the practitioners to establish the content

validity.

Administration. The researchers asked permission from the head teacher of the

Integrated School through a letter noted by the adviser. After getting the

permission, the researchers approached the parents and asked them to answer the

questionnaire.

Retrieval. After the respondents have completed the questionnaire, the data will

be collected from the Google form and printed for scoring.

Scoring. To interpret the information, responses were rated using the following

assign points.

4 3.50 – 4.00 Always

3 2.50 – 3.49 Often

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR3/THESIS SY 2022-2023

2 1.50-2.49 Seldom

1 1.00-1.49 Never

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers drafted a letter of request to the head teacher at the

Integrated School, asking for the permission to conduct this study. After getting

the approval of the head teacher, the copies of the questionnaire were distributed

personally to the parents.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical tools were utilized to treat and give meaning to

the data gathering.

Weighted mean. This was used to determine the average mean of items in each

category and to know the respondents’ view on the variables of the study. It can

be more useful than a regular average because it offers more nuance. It reduces

the weight of data that is less important, allowing more material data to have a

more significant effect on the result. You can also use it to correct for deficiencies

in a dataset Robinhood (2022).

Frequency and percentage. These were used to quantify the demographic

variables of the respondents. They are especially useful when making

comparisons, but they are also useful when studying a difference compared.

CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

The section present the analysis and interpretation of the study on the

(research problem) following the quantitative or qualitative methodology. The

content of this chapter are the responses of the respondents gathered through

(survey, interview or etc) method. Through interviews, respondent were able to

unconsciously cover the set of questions.

1. Challenges encountered by senior high school student in modular learning

No one was prepared for the sudden shift in the landscape of education

due to the undeniable effect of the COVID pandemic . This unpredictable health

crisis prompted education institutions to plan and strategize how to deliver quality

education despite the threat of the highly contagious disease. One of the solutions

to introduced and applied by the Department of Education (DepEd) is modular

learning. Where lessons and learning task will be delivered through printed

modules . However, modular learning fostered challenges not only teachers but

also to the learners. Table 1 show the challenges encountered by a senior high

school student in modular learning.

Table 1.

Table 1. Challenges encountered by senior high school students in modular
learning

Based from the table above, it shows that out of the 200 research

192 or 96% of them answered that they struggle in self-learning. This

illustrates that many students cannot fully comprehend lessons reflected in

their modules. That they need someone to help and explain the concepts

and topics in their learning modules. This agrees with article written by

Pokhrei and Chhetri (2021) , students who are weak in learning face

difficulties in offline activities and self-explanatory learning. While, 170 or

85% of the research respondents lack of sleep and time to answer their

learning modules because of its vast number. On the other hand, 50% or

100 student are lack of focus. This can be traced from different factors like

learning environment (home), habits, family, friends and etc,.

From the above discussions, it implies that modular learning gave

students the opportunity to continue with their education amid st the

prevailing world health crisis brought forth by the pandemic. However,

AICS Lipa <STRAND> PRR3/THESIS SY 2022-2023

formal education in the time of pandemic prompted schools and learner

problems that need immediate solution. (write general conclusion to each
