Following the story of a young probinsyano, Julio Madiaga (played by Bembol Roco)
atives in Manila from Marinduque to look for his lost hometown girlfriend, Ligaya Paraiso
(played by Hilda Koronel), There, he experiences more than what he initially anticipated, which
was to simply look for his partner and go back home. He finds unsteady and odd jobs just so he
can get by the day. He experiences the uncomfortable way of life of the underclass the city. He
becomes someone he is not, someone angry and violent. His experiences allow the movie to touch
on the relevant themes in the era it was made, which is the former President Ferdinand Marcos’
time. A theme that grabbed my attention is how the job system worked in this era. Being a student
in college, my next step in life would be to use my education to get a job that is rightfully fit for
me and my abilities. I would want to practice my rights as a human and an employee of the
workforce when I get a job. Julio and Ligaya’s luck with jobs anger me as a future worker. The
movie shows how corrupt employers were, fooling their employees with their own scams for their
own profit.
