PART A – Solve manually

QUESTION 1 (15 marks)
2
Given f ( x )=( x−2 ) ( 2 x+3 ) . Find:
a) The x-intercept. (1
mark)
b) The interval where the function is increasing or decreasing. Hence, determine the
extremum point if any. (8
marks)
c) The interval where the function is concave up or concave down. Hence, determine the
inflection point if any. (5
marks)
d) Using the above information, sketch the graph of f(x). (1 mark)

QUESTION 2 (15 marks)

Given a function .

a) Find the x-and y- intercepts. (2 marks)

b) Find the vertical asymptotes and horizontal asymptotes. (3 marks)

c) Find the interval(s) where f(x) is increasing or decreasing. (4 marks)

d) Find the interval(s) where f(x) is concave up or concave down. (3 marks)

e) Hence, sketch the graph of f(x) using the above information. (3 marks)

PART B – Solving Using Maple

QUESTION 1 (4 marks)
Find the derivative for each of the following functions.
Question Maple Commands Output

1 a) f(x) = cos(x + e2x – 3)

1 b) f(x) =

QUESTION 2 (16 marks )

Given the following function . Determine (if any) by using maple.

i) the x-intercept and y-intercept;
ii) the critical point(s);
iii) the interval(s) where f is increasing or decreasing; and relative extremum (if any)
iv) the interval(s) where f is concave up and concave down and inflection point (if any).
Then, sketch the graph of f.
Give your complete Maple commands to answer each of the above questions.

Instruction Maple commands Output

1. Define the function

2. Find the
i) x-intercept
ii) y-intercept

Q1: State the points for

i) x-intercept : (3,0) and (0,0)
ii) y-intercept : (0,0)

3. Find the critical points.

Q2: State the critical point(s) : (0,0) and (2,4)

The critical points have divided the domain of f into 3 intervals, which are (-∞,0), (0,2) and (2, ∞).
4. Find the interval(s) where f is
increasing or decreasing.

Q3 : State

i) the interval of increasing : (0,2)

ii) the interval of decreasing : (-∞,0) and (2, ∞)

State the relative extremum (if any)

Relative maximum : (2,4)

Relative minimum : (0,0)

5. Find the interval(s) where f is

concave up and concave down and
inflection point and determine inflection
point.

Q4 : State
i) the interval of concave up : (-∞,1)
ii) the interval of concave down : (1, ∞)

State the inflection point (if any)

Inflection point : (1,2)

6. Plotting the graph of f using maple in
the domain of -3 and range
of -
