SUN IN NOVEMBER

SCENE ONE: INT: BEDROOM - AFTERNOON

MUSIC: NEW YORK INSPIRED MUSIC PLAYING FROM PHONE

DISSOLVE FADE into this TEENAGER’s BEDROOM, as we enter the room meeting
Riley, a 17-year-old teenage girl, sitting on her floor against her bed with a notebook in front
of her as she is listening to music from the speaker of her phone.

Staring in and out of this notebook, written in bold in the notebook, “Ideas”. Staring around,
maybe a tear being wiped from her face, she finds herself out of words. Tapping her pen
against the notebook losing patience.

Riley looks at her phone, picking her phone up with “One new voicemail” which has been
left from a week ago. The resistance of clicking on this voice note breaks her apart, not in the
way that makes you cry, but in the way that makes you feel a little bit of regret.

With all the urge to click that voice note, she finally clicks the notification, and the voicemail
begins to play.

END MUSIC TRACK

Voicemail (Grandma Cathy) O.S

Hi Riley, sorry, I thought we were going to be having a chat on Sunday but

guessed we must both have had scheduling issues.

INT: AT A FRIENDS HOUSE – LATE NIGHT

FLASHBACK to this dark room with many teenagers dancing to the music as Riley is
moving past them having a good time. Above them there is this orange light that fills up the
room, leaving what’s left of highlighted silhouettes enjoying teenage youth.

END FLASHBACK.

Riley wipes a tear from her face as she listens to that last sentence, instantly we see regret
shining across her face.

Voicemail (Grandma Cathy) O.S

Yeah but um, I just got this new phone, so I hope it sounds good on your end
ha ha. You know I’m not the best when it comes to anything technological. Back in
my day, we only had a cup and a string to talk to each other ha ha, no I am just
kidding we did have a phone that the whole family shared.

As Riley is listening to this, she begins to start tapping her pen against the notebook on the
letters of “Ideas”. Leaning forward, then leaning backwards. Maybe with a little smile
covering her face.
Riley is standing in front of this book with a look of disappointment in herself. With a
passing of time, we CUT to having the camera still in the same place as before, while she is
spinning in the chair, still looking at the notebook.

Voicemail (Grandma Cathy) O.S

So, I know last time you were telling me how you were thinking about what to
write about for your book idea, well, ha ha, I mean I know it will be great since it runs
in the family.

SCENE 2: EXT: A FIELD FILLED WITH FLOWERS AND GRASS (SUNSET)

FLASHFORWARD to a time where Riley is standing in a field with this glow overlooking
her as she stares at the sky, the sun shining, embracing the sky. The sound of birds, the wind
slowly breezing through.

Voicemail (Grandma Cathy) O.S

But don’t stop, don’t give up on that writing. As writer’s we write for a
purpose, to write stories for the ones who need it the most. (Cough, Cough) It might
feel so hard to write one more letter, one more word. We are in control of our own
destiny so don’t let this pull you down.

EXT: WALKWAY NEXT TO RIVER – SUNSET

FLASHFORWARD playing as the voicemail is heard, RILEY running along the walkway,
out of breath as the sunset fills the sky. Lifting her head back trying to stop the emotions from
coming out.

END FLASHBACK.

SCENE 3: INT: BEDROOM - AFTERNOON

RILEY continuously tapping against her notepad resisting the urge to write. The sound of
Ticking meeting the tapping, continues.

POV OF RILEY standing up experiencing going in and out of fainting. Here we meet a
flashing MONTAGE.

FLASH.

INT: DARK HOUSE PARTY – EVENING

As seen before, we revisit the party flashback, Riley having this picture constantly stuck in
her mind.

FLASH.

EXT: MIDDLE OF THE FIELD – AFTERNOON – SUNSET

As seen before, revisiting the FLASHFORWARD, of Riley standing in the middle of a field
having the wind breezing over.

FLASH.

INT: RILEY’S BEDROOM – AFTERNOON

Riley experiencing such hallucinations or fainting, who knows, trying to grab to grips with
what is happening, holding her head so tight, blood stopping in her veins from reaching her
forehead. Tick, Tick, Tick.

SCENE FOUR: EXT: FIELD FILLED WITH FLOWERS AND GRASS (SUNSET)

RILEY (V.O)

And all of the noise became instantly silent. For the first time I didn’t no what
to write.

Riley standing in the middle of this field, looking up at the sky, all we can see is the sunset
filling the sky, what might be up there? Grandma Cathy?

RILEY (V.O)

The passing of Grandma Cathy reminded me how incredibly lucky we are to

be able to walk one more day on this earth. To smell the flowers as I walked the
empty neighbourhoods, the fresh smell of coffee in the morning, sounds of birds
chirping in the trees right when you wake up, Grandma Cathy taught me how much
we should appreciate every second of the life we are given.

EXT: DOCK AT THE RIVER – SUNSET

Riley, carrying on from before, running from all these emotions until she stopped at the dock.
Catching her breath, looking at the ducks in the water.

RILEY (V.O)

Looking deep into the sky, I can see your smile, hear your laughter, but most
importantly, for me, being lucky enough to have known you became a moment in
time. A moment that turned the world into a better place.

And I want you to know that the hardest part wasn't saying goodbye, the
hardest part was knowing I wasn't going to have you in my life. I love you.

BLACK SCREEN

SOUND: CHILDREN PLAYING AT THE PARK, WATER MOVING IN THE RIVER

FADE IN as we see Riley sitting on the bench, taking out a paper out of her pocket, finally
she has these words said out, when it felt the hardest to write. She looks up…
