b) 23.0 N d) 45.0 N

_____ 8. A car moves around a banked curve at a constant speed over the black ice with virtually no friction.
What causes the car to accelerate?

a) the normal force. c) the horizontal component of the normal

force.
b) gravity. d) the vertical component of the normal force.
_____ 9. Which of the following causes merry-go-round rides to feel as if they are being pushed away from the
centre of the ride?

a) being in an inertia reference frame. c) centripetal acceleration.

b) the Coriolis force. d) centrifugal force.

_____ 10. A cart on a roller coaster is upside down at the top of a clothoid loop. At this point, riders feel
weightless. The radius of the loop at the top is 10.0 m. What is the speed of the cart?

a) 7.0 m/s c) 14 m/s

b) 9.9 m/s d) 98 m/s

Short Answer – Neatly provide written responses

11. How are centrifuges used in blood analysis? [2 marks]

A centrifuge spins and separates the platelets, plasma, and red blood cells from a blood sample.

12. You are swinging your keys at the end of a lanyard in a horizontal circle around your head.
What is in the effect of the keys in each case? [2 marks]
a) You keep the radius of the circle constant but double the speed.
The centrifugal force is quadrupled
a Velocity is directly proportional to Fc and squared

b) The speed of the keys stays the same, but you double the radius.

Centrifugal force and radius is inversely proportional so therefore, the Fc would be half of its original
13. While riding in a car heading east, you hold an accelerometer in your hand, like the one
below. The angle of the bead changes with the acceleration of the car. [3 marks]
vertical

bead

a) Describe what happens to the bead when the vehicle is at rest.

Nothing, there is no acceleration nor velocity

b) Describe what happens to the bead when the vehicle is accelerating toward the east.
The bead will increase in the positive direction to the number that is the acceleration

c) The bead is at an angle of 13° from the vertical. Calculate the magnitude of the car’s
acceleration.
at 90 degrees from the vertical, the acceleration would be 90 m/s*s [E], thus w/ 13 degrees, we can
calculated it to be 13 m/s*s

14. An object is swung around on a string in a vertical circle, while its speed is slowly increased. At some
point, the string breaks. Where in the object’s path would this most likely happen? Explain. (3 marks)
We are assuming this to be a vertical circle

The string is most likely to break to the bottom of the circular path, as this where the tension of the
string will the greatest. This is due to the gravitational force pulling the object down and the force
applied pulling back up
Part B – Communication [10 marks]
Communication throughout the test will be evaluated on 1) significant digits (avoid rounding off errors) 2) proper use
of units 3) well-labelled diagrams 4) organized, neat and legible 5) Show all work with concluding statements.

Part C – Thinking (Full Solution is required) [10 marks]

15. A 1500-kg car making a turn on a dry banked highway ramp with angle of inclination of 10° is experiencing
friction. The coefficient of static friction between the tires and the road is 0.40. Draw vector components for the
force of static friction and for the normal force.
a. Determine the maximum speed at which the car can safely negotiate a turn of radius 2.0 X 102 m. (7 marks)
We assume a safely negotiated turn is one where the car does not move up or down the ramp
b. How would this maximum speed be different if (3 marks)
i) the car were heavier?
ii) the angle were greater?
iii) the coefficient of friction were less?
y

i) the mass does not effect the maximum speed

ii) Max speed would be more
iii) Max speed would be less
Part D – Application (Full Solutions are Required) [20 marks]
16. Below is a diagram showing two blocks joined with a rope that runs over a pulley. The mass 𝑚2 is 5.0 kg and the
incline is 30°. The coefficient static of friction between 𝑚1 and the inclined plane is 0.25. [10 marks]

Determine the largest mass for 𝑚1 such that both blocks remain at rest. [7 marks] You must draw a FBD for 𝑚1 and a
