SERVICE LETTER ATR42

TITLE: Air conditioning - Loss of cooling capability, simplified trouble shooting


procedure

1. EFFECTIVITY

Valid all ATR42-200, ATR42-300, ATR42-320, ATR42-400 models.

NOTE: For ATR42-500, refer to Service Letter No. ATR42-21-5016.

2. REASON

This Service Letter provides a simple "first level" trouble shooting procedure to be applied in
case of loss or degradation of cooling efficiency of air conditioning system.

The purpose of the procedure is to give general guidelines for trouble shooting. More details
are included in the trouble shooting manual pictures (ref. chap. 21-51 and 21-61).

It is divided in four figures each one consisting of a flow chart with some decision points and
relevant procedures to be applied.

This flow takes into account the system components and the associated electrical circuits.

The verification of electrical wirings can be made referring to the relative TSM and AWD
section and taking into account that electrical failures, particularly open circuits, should be
double-checked at both end of circuit i.e. at component itself, to avoid unjustified rejections
and/or further components damage.

3. DESCRIPTION

A. The figure 100 describes the trouble shooting to perform in order to establish if
loss/degradation of cooling capability appears:
- on ground, in flight or both.
- in auto mode, in manual mode, in both modes.

B. The figures 101, 102 and 103 show the actions to be taken per each case of
loss/degradation of cooling capability in auto mode, manual mode or in both modes.

PROCEDURES:

1 - ENGINE RUNNING

WITH RH ENG BLEED AND PACK VALVE P/BSW'S PRESSED VERIFY THAT THE FAN
IS RUNNING.

2 - WITH SAME CONFIGURATION OF PROCEDURE 1 VERIFY THAT THERE IS


115V/400 HZ BETWEEN RED AND BLUE TERMINALS OF VENTILATION FAN 22HH.

3 - ENGINE RUNNING

SEE IF THE PROBLEM IS CORRECTED BY CROSSING THE TWO TEMPERATURE


CONTROLLERS.
THE FAILURE WOULD PASS TO THE OTHER SIDE OF AIRCRAFT IF NECESSARY.
USE AN INTERCONNECTING JUMPER HARNESS TO OPERATE THE "ECU" FROM
THE CONTROLLER OF THE OTHER SIDE OF THE AIRCRAFT (THE GOOD SIDE).

4 - DISCONNECT CONNECTOR FROM TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER, WIRING SIDE,


WITH BATTERY ON, CHECK THE FOLLOWING VOLTAGE VALUES:

NOTE: THERE IS A WIDE VARIATION WITH TEMPERATURE IN THE EXPECTED


RESISTANCE OF A THERMISTOR. IF THERE IS ANY DOUBT CONCERNING A
SPECIFIC VALUE, CHECK THE EQUIVALENT ON THE "GOOD" SIDE OF THE
AIRCRAFT.

6 - A DISCREPANT READING IN A SENSOR THERMISTOR RESISTANCE VALUE, i.e.


(R-S, W-X-Y, b-c), WILL MOST LIKELY BE OPEN CIRCUIT, INDICATING A FAILED
THERMISTOR. IF THIS IS INDICATED, LOCATE THE OFFENDING SENSOR,
DISCONNECT ITS WIRES, AND DOUBLE-CHECK THE RESISTANCE VALUE AT THE
SENSOR.

7 - ON THE TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER CONNECTOR, WIRING SIDE, CHECK FOR


TEMPERATURE SELECTOR 5HH(6HH) POTENTIOMETER RESISTANCE (AUTO

LOSS OF COOLING CAPABILITY EITHER IN AUTO
AND MAN MODE (FIG. 103)

1 - PERFORM INSPECTION OF HEAT EXCHANGER ACCORDING TO


AMM (JIC) 21-51-51-RAI-10000. CLEAN AS GARRET SERVICE LETTER GP 13.

2 - RH ENGINE H/M, PERFORM A LEAK TEST TO DISCOVERY THE ABNORMALITY


ACCORDING TO AMM (JIC) 21-51-00 CHK 10020.

3 - DISCONNECT INLET CONTROL PRESSURE PORT OF TRIM AIR VALVE AND


CONNECT A PRESSURE GAGE TO THIS LINE. OPERATE THE SYSTEM AND
CHECK THAT THERE IS 15 ± 3 PSIG THIS LINE.

4 - REMOVE THE ACM AS PER AMM (JIC) 21-51-52-RAI-10000

CHECK THE STATIC BREAKWAY TORQUE AS INDICATED IN THE SERVICE


LETTER GARRETT GP-7.

NOTE: - With engine running and BLEED and PACK selected ON, the ACM is not
correctly operating if the compressor side is not HOT and/or the turbine side is
not COLD.

- Following a failed ACM removal, before the new ACM installation, it is


recommended to check the TIC valve (ref. HONEYWELL SERVICE LETTER
GP-22) and the water extraction system (hose and spray nozzle) according to
the AMM (JIC) 21-51-91 CHK 10000.
