Question- Calculate the maximum uniformly distributed load that a laterally
unsupported beam can carry if made with ISLB 400@ 558.2N/m for a length of 4m.
Take steel grade Fe410.

1) Given data- Properties of ISLB 400 @ 558.2N/m

l= 4000mm h=400mm, bf=165mm, tf=12.5mm,
fu= 410MPa tw=8.0mm, Izz=19306.3×104mm4 ,
fy=250MPa h1=336.2mm,
ϒm0=1.1 Zp=1099.45×103 mm3
Ze= 965.3×103 mm3
r1=16mm, rz=163.3mm, ry=31.5mm

2) Classification of cross section- (Table No 2)

a)Flange= (bf/tf)=[(bf/2)/(tf)]=(82.5/12.5)= 6.6 <9.4ɛ ∴ flange is plastic Section is

b)Web= (h1/tw)= (336.2/8) = 42.02< 84ɛ ∴ web is also plastic Plastic βb=1

3) Design bending strength of section (Md)-(Cl.No. 8.2.2 Pg.No.54)
Md=βb Zp fbd
-For calculation of (f bd ) i.e. design bending compressive stress due to lateral buckling ,
critical stress (fcr,b) is to be calculated first.

-For calculating critical stress (fcr,b) we require slenderness ratio i.e. (λ=KL/r) and (h/tf)
ratio.

-Referring Table No 14 Pg. No. 57 of IS800:2007, we get-

KL/r h/tf=
- fcr,b = 3974.9=3975.00 (4000/ 163.3) (400/12.5)
=24.49 =32

25 3974.9

for (fbd) refer table no. 13(a) for rolled sections αLT=0.21
fcr,b fy=250
Md=βb Zp fbd 4000 227.3
=1.0×1099.45×103×227.30 3974.9 227.3
=249.90kN-m 2000 227.3
4) Maximum uniformly distributed load-

Equating Md = Mu
249.90×106 = (Wu×L2/8)
Maximum factored UDL= Wu= 124.95kN/m
Maximum working UDL= W= 83.3 kN/m
Maximum external UDL=W-Self Weight
= 83.3-0.5582
= 84.74kN/m

ISLB 400@ 558.2N/m is capable of carrying load of 84.74kN/m for given condition.
