MINDSCAPE

A SHORT FILM SHOWCASING THE EFFECTS OF

PSYCHEDELIC DRUG USE

BY JACK ROWLAND

7
CHARACTERS:
- CONNOR

SCRIPT NEXT PAGE ON:

8
SCENE ONE: EXT. UNDER A TUNNEL – MIDDAY

We open with various shots of the area surrounding the tunnel.

Messages, the river, forest, etc. The river, the forest, etc. It is
silent. We cut to our protagonist, CONNOR. He is leant against the
tunnel, with a backpack next to him, he is looking at his hand intently
and his breathing is shaky. We cut to a close up of his hand and see he
is holding two small pills in his hand. The camera pans up to his face
and he looks intrigued yet determined.

CONNOR

(Talking to himself, like a pep talk)

Okay, I worked hard for these. Here we go, right, one, two…

On ‘two’, CONNOR puts both pills in his mouth. Over that line there is a
bass build up sound that peaks when the pills are about to be put in
CONNORS mouth. The sound cuts out as he puts the pills in his mouth. He
looks around, as if waiting for something to happen.

CONNOR

(Almost Relief)

Oh… I guess it isn’t instant

9
We get a long wide shot from the tunnel of CONNOR standing up and
walking down into the forest on a walk. As we walks off into the forest
through the tunnel the title fades in on screen, ‘MINDSCAPE’.

SCENE TWO: EXT. IN THE FOREST - MIDDAY

We cut to various shots of CONNOR walking through this forest. He sits

down on a bench, moving his leg constantly. He pulls out his phone and
we cut to an over the shoulder shot where we see him look up, ‘How long
does it take for psychedelics to work?’. We cut to a shot taken at his
feet in the middle of him searching. He puts his phone away.

CONNOR

(Sighs)

I guess I just need to-

As he says the line, we get a wide shot as colour starts to fade it,
bright reds, and yellows and blues etc. Fading in and out of each other
with visual warping effects happening too.

CONNOR

(Baffled, and slightly put off/worried)

…wait

SCENE THREE: EXT. IN THE FOREST - MIDDAY

We see CONNOR get up from where he was sat, and he goes up to a few
branches and bushes to examine them and see the difference these effects
are making. He starts stroking them and feeling them.

CONNOR

10
(Reassuringly)

Okay, okay they’re real.

CONNOR walks away from the bushes and we get various shots of him
walking through this forest, examining different things around him with
all these new colour enhancements. The bushes, the water, the flowers
etc.

CONNOR

God, this is… amazing. So amazing.

SCENE FOUR: EXT. BY THE RIVERBANK – MIDDAY

CONNOR walks over and sits down against a tree near the water and rubs
the ground. Picking up the dirt and letting it flow through his hands.
He stands up and goes to stand at the edge of the water, looking out
across the river, he’s got a almost, completed look about him

CONNOR

(Peacefully)

I feel like… I’ve done it. Like, I’ve just, won. At everything!

The camera is behind CONNOR and the colours and psychedelic effects start
to ramp up exponentially. They have been ever since they began but now
they’re getting extremely noticeable. The camera pans around to CONNORS
face as he is visibly getting distraught with how high and ramped up all
the effects are. There is also a lot of noise ramping up, build up sounds,
bass, almost as if it is all crashing down in front of the audiences
eyes.

CONNOR

(Almost annoyed like and distraught)

Oh, Christ… that’s too much, uhh, stop

11
When the camera pans around to CONNORS face, he scrunches his eyes shut.
The frame is fully taken up with the top half of his face. He is deeply
panting as if out of breath. The colours fade back into normal and all
the sounds fade away. CONNORS face relaxes, but his eyes are still firmly
shut.

CONNOR

(Eyes still shut)

Phew…

CONNOR slowly opens his eyes back up again, but there’s a look of pure
horror on his face.

CONNOR

(Panicked)

W-What?!

SCENE FIVE: EXT. BY THE RIVERBANK IN THE DRAWN WORLD - MIDDAY

We cut back to the same camera angle that was used before, except this
time, the background and land around CONNOR is a traced drawing. We are
now in the drawn world.

CONNOR

(Trying to pull himself together)

O-o-okay, this cannot be real life.

CONNOR scrambles around in his pockets trying to find the pills and his
phone.

CONNOR

12
(Panicking heavily)

Jesus Christ, how strong were those pills?

CONNOR looks around this drawn world, completely taken aback by what is
happening.

CONNOR

(Hyperventilating)

Okay, right, let’s see if there’s anywhere else like

this. It’ll probably just wear off in a few minutes anyway…

SCENE SIX: EXT. IN THE FOREST IN THE DRAWN WORLD - MIDDAY

CONNOR walks off from the riverbank to the right side back onto the
forest path. He goes back over to the first bush he examined earlier,
except this time, he can’t feel anything.

CONNOR

W-W-Why can’t I feel it anymore? Is that with

everything?

CONNOR walks over to a fence by the bank, he goes and tries to put his
hands in the water, yet again, nothing.

CONNOR

No water either…

CONNOR scrambles again, pulls out his phone and checks the date, the
news, etc.

CONNOR

13
Right so, we’re in the modern day, b-but this, it must
be the pills. My god…

SCENE SEVEN: EXT. IN AN OPEN AREA IN THE DRAWN WORLD - MIDDAY

CONNOR keeps walking down through until he reaches a point with a wider
path and a bench. CONNOR tries to sit down on the bench but of course,
it’s a drawing so he can’t and he falls to the floor.

CONNOR

Shit. Okay I can’t sit down either.

CONNOR is sat on the floor, defeated. He looks around this drawn world
seeing if there is any escape.

CONNOR

Right, I got myself here, I can get myself out

of here. I just shut my eyes before, surely that’ll
work again.

We hear the tension build up sound again, as the camera cuts to the
same angle used before to get CONNOR to this drawn world. He scrunches
his eyes shut again, and he takes a deep breath. The music fades away,
just like last time.

CONNOR

(Still with his eyes shut)

Okay, come on, please

CONNOR opens his eyes, to a look of horror and sadness. We hard cut to
the same wide angle used before, with CONNOR on the floor. Everything is
the same.

14
CONNOR

(Heavily panicking)

Oh come on! Why didn’t that work? Why isn’t this going
away?!

CONNOR is looking around him for anyone or anything that could help him

CONNOR

God and, where is everyone? Why is there

nobody around?

CONNOR gets up and keeps walking, there is a small gap in the ground
and CONNOR slips through it. CONNOR is screaming while falling through
the air. The camera is on his face while falling, and he lands on his
front (Lands on front so that when getting up photos can be easily
placed on top). We’re in the front of the tunnel at the riverbank. It’s
back to real life. However now, it’s all photos. We are in the stop
motion photo world.

SCENE EIGHT: EXT. BY THE RIVER BY THE TUNNEL IN THE STOP MOTION
PHOTOGRAPHY WORLD - MIDDAY

CONNOR

(Looking around)

Yes! I did it!

CONNOR tries standing up but it is incredibly difficult as it is stop

motion.

CONNOR

Christ, why is it so, slow? It’s like I’m a toy

15
CONNOR slowly makes his way up, with the photos stacking up too to
correspond. He is grunting the whole time as he makes his way up.

CONNOR

It’s like, stop motion, almost.

CONNOR starts moving his arms around to try and figure out how this is
working, the movement is all very sudden and not fluid.

CONNOR

Ah, God. This is awful, when is this all gonna wear off?? I
shouldn’t have taken those fucking Pills… Never doing this
again. Never again.

Over the top of all of that, CONNOR is walking to the right, on his way
back to where this film started, under the tunnel. The photo placements
go back and forth between smooth and jagged throughout.

CONNOR

(Panicked and exhausted)

I’m… so… sick… of this

CONNOR starts picking up the pace through the forest, the photos moving
up and down as the camera moves up and down his body to show his feet
running. He is running back to the tunnel where he initially took the
pills. He is charging to the edge to try and break out of this world.

SCENE NINE: EXT. INSIDE THE TUNNEL - MIDDAY

He crashes through the photos and we are finally back in the real world.
CONNOR scrambles back to the edge of the tunnel, heavily breathing and
panting, afraid. He puts his head in his hands and starts shaking his
head. The camera does a long shot, panning away from CONNOR as he sits
alone in the tunnel. The camera gets to a stationary point to showcase
the whole tunnel. The title ‘MINDSCAPE’ comes back, fading in again. The

16
tension build up sound plays for the final time, and on the peak the film
hard cuts to black.
