Engagement

For online class

The teacher will show a music video about measurements.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypVQDZL18SQ

After showing the video, the teacher will ask questions related to the song;
1. What is shown in the song?
2. What are the units used for measuring length?
3. What are the units used for measuring the mass?

After asking questions, the teacher will show pictures and ask them about the instruments
being used in measuring.
For face-to-face class

The teacher will have a mystery box. Inside the mystery box are pictures that they will
identify what unit of measurement we are going to use.
Explain

Let’s talk about Measurements!

When we measure, we compare objects to figure out which one is shorter, longer
or taller, and heavier or lighter.

Length is when we measure the side by side of the objects.

● When we compare two objects to decide which one is shorter and which
one is longer, we have to make sure both start at the same place.

These are the examples of instruments used in measuring length.

The centimeter ruler, tape measure and meter stick are standard instruments for
measuring length. A centimeter or cm is a metric unit for measuring length.

In using a ruler, we start from the 0 mark.

From 0 to 1 is 1 cm, 0 to 2 cm, 0 to 3 is cm, and so on.

Let us use the centimeter ruler to get lengths of objects.

What is the length of the pencil?

What is the length of the safety pins?

Another unit measure is meter. One meter is equal to 100 centimeters or
1 m = 100 cm.
One meter is about the length from the right shoulder of an adult to the left middle
finger.
Example (meter):

The length of the towel is equal to one meter.

Change the unit from centimeter to meter and from meter to centimeter.

Let’s study the given example!

1. If 1 meter is equal to 100 centimeters, then 5 meters is how many

centimeters?

Step 1: Know what is asked.

5 m = _____ cm
Changing the unit from a bigger unit to a smaller unit.

Step 2: In changing a bigger unit to a smaller unit, we multiply,

5 x 100 = 500
Answer: 5m = 500 cm

2. A piece of rope is 800 centimeters. How many meters is this?

Step 1 : Know what is asked.

800 cm = ____cm
Changing from a smaller unit to a bigger unit.
Step 2: In changing a smaller unit to a bigger unit, we divide.
800 ➗ 100 = 8
800 cm = 8 m
Answer: The rope is 8 meters long.

Another linear measure is the kilometer.

Kilometer is used for very long linear measures or distances.

1 km = 1,000 m

Mass

Problem: In a market, a vendor sells a whole chicken for 120 pesos regardless of its size.

Questions:
Is it wise to give the same price of the chicken meat regardless of size? Why or
why not?
If you are the vendor, how will you sell the chicken meat?

Answer: The price of the chicken meat depends on its weight or its mass. This means
that the heavier the meat, the higher its price. So, this is just fair.

Question:

What do you think are the measuring tools that we are going to use when we are
measuring the mass of the chicken?

The arrow hand is pointing to two. This means that the chicken weighs 2kg.

A kilogram is a unit of mass or weight. A kilogram is used to measure heavy objects.

The symbol for kilogram is kg.

Nilo weighs 35kg The dog weighs 30 kilograms A sack of rice weighs 50kg.

Elaboration
The teacher will post a picture and the students will measure the mass and the length
using the appropriate tools in measuring. The teacher will randomly call the name of a
student, the student will be the one to measure it either using a centimeter ruler or a DIY
weighing scale.
