Lesson 13: Teaching with Visual

symbols.

Are representations of direct reality, which comes in the form of signs and symbols.

DRAWINGS

-          A drawing may not be real thing but better to have a concrete visual aid than nothing. To
avoid confusion , it is good that our drawing correctly represents the real thing.
CARTOONS
-Another useful visual symbol that can bring novelty to our teaching is the cartoon. A
first-rate cartoon tells its story metaphorically.
STRIP DRAWINGS

- a sequence of drawings in a newspaper, magazine, etc., relating a humorous story or

an adventure
DIAGRAMS
-          “It is any line drawing that shows arrangement and relations as of parts to the whole, relative
values, origins and development, chronological fluctuations, distributions, etc.” ( Dale, 1969)
TYPES OF DIAGRAMS
-          Affinity Diagram - used to cluster complex apparently unrelated data into natural and
meaningful groups
-          Tree Diagram – used in increasing details or various tasks that must be accomplished to
complete a project

-          Fishbone Diagram - cause-and-effect diagram

CHARTS
- It is a diagrammatic representation of relationships among individuals within an
organizations.
TYPES OF CHARTS
Time Chart - tabular time chart that presents data in ordinal sequence

Tree or Stream Chart -depicts development, growth and change by beginning with a

simple course with spread outs into many branches
Flowchart - visual way of showing a process from beginning to end
Organizational Chart - shows how one part of the organization relates to other parts of
the organization

Comparison and Contrast Chart – shows similarities and differences.

Pareto chart - type of bar chart, prioritized in descending order of magnitude or

importance from left to right
Gannt chart – is an activity time chart.

GRAPHS
-          pictures that help us understand data
Circle Graph –recommended for showing parts of whole.
Bar Graph – use in comparing the magnitude of similar items at different ties or seeing
relative sizes of the parts of a whole

Pictorial Graph – make use of picture symbols

Graphic organizers – you met several graphic organizers in your subject, principles of
teaching.

MAPS
- Is a representation of the surface of the earth or some part of it.
Physical Map – altitude, temperature, rainfall, precipitation, vegetation and soil.
Relief Map – three dimensional represents and show contours of the physical data of the
earth or part of the earth

Political Map – gives detailed information about country, provinces, lakes, rivers etc.
Poster- a large printed picture, photograph, or notice that you stick or pin to a wall or board, usually for
decoration or to advertise something
Teaching with visual symbols

"Visual symbols will be made meaningful if we can use them as summaries of our own direct
experiences or our own rich indirect experiences... A little can stand for a lot!"

Different kinds of visual symbols:

 Drawings: represents the real thing

1. Cartoons: tells a story metaphorically and no longer needs the use of captions
2. Stick Drawings
3. Strip Drawings: commonly called comics or comic strips
 Diagrams: line drawing that shows arrangements and relations of parts to a whole
1. Affinity Diagram: cluster complex
2. Tree Diagram: chart out in increasing detail
3. Fishbone Diagram: cause and effect diagram
 Charts: diagrammatic representation of relationships
1. Time Chart: presents data in ordinal sequence
2. Tree or stream chart: depicts development, growth and change
3. Flow Chart: showing a process from beginning to end
4. Organizational Chart: relates to other parts of the organization
5. Comparison and contrast chart
6. Pareto chart: shows at a glance which factors are occurring most
7. Gannt chart: activity time chart
 Graphs
1. Pie or circle graph: showing parts of a whole
2. Bar graph: comparing the magnitude of similar items at different ties
3. Pictorial graph: makes use of picture symbols
4. Graphic organizers: information organizer
 Maps: representation of the surface of the earth or some parts of it
1. Physical map: combines in a single projection data
2. Relief map: three dimensional representations and show contours of physical data
3. Commercial or Economic map: product or industrial map that shows land area in
relation to the economy
4. Political map: gives detailed information about the country

Teaching With Visual Symbol

Teaching with visual symbols, the teacher makes use of abstract representation such as
graphs, diagrams, comic strip, chart, and cartoons. These visual symbols worth a thousand
words because they are easier to understand than words of a paragraph.

1.      Graph is consist of diff. types:

Pie graph
-           use for showing parts of the whole.

Bar graph
-          use in comparing the magnitude of similar items at diff. ties.

Pictorial graph
-          makes use of picture symbols.
2.      Cartoons
-          these symbols can bring novelty to teaching. They tell the story metamorphic ally

3.      Comic strip
-          this can be used by teacher for educational and entertaining. This can serves as motivation and
starter of the lesson.

4.      Diagram
-          this is any line drawing that shows arrangements and relations as to part of the whole, relative
values, origins and development, chronological fluctuation and distribution.

It is composing of three types;

a.       Affinity diagram
-          use to cluster complex apparently unrelated data into natural and meaningful groups.
b.      Fish bone
-          it is also called cause-and-effect diagram. It is a structured form of brainstorming that
graphically shows relationship of possible causes and sub-causes directly related to an
identified effect or problem.
c.       Tree diagram
-          depicts development, growth and change  by beginning with a single course which spreads out
in many branches.

5.      Chart
-          this is a diagrammatic representation of relationship among individuals within an organization.
It is compose of diff. types:
-          Flow chart-s visual way of showing a process from the beginning to the end.
-          Organizational chart-shows how are part of the organization relates to other parts of the
organization
-          Pareto chart-type of bar chart prioritized in descending order of magnitude from left and right.
-          Gannt chart-is an activity time chart.
-          Time chart-a tabular time chart that presents data in ordinal sequence.
