Arranging Real Numbers in increasing or decreasing order on a number Line.

Learning Objectives:

 Arrange real numbers in increasing or decreasing order on a number line.

 Convert fractions to decimal
 Arrange real numbers in increasing or decreasing order
 on a number line.

Words/Vocabulary:

 Real Numbers- The real number system is the set of numbers consists of different subsets that
can be graphically presented on a number line.
 Integer- A number that can be written without a fractional component. Whole Numbers-
 Counting Numbers- It is the set of numbers you first count with, starting with 1.
 Irrational Number- a real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction. Irrational means
not rational.

The set of numbers called the real number system consists of different partitions/ subsets that can be
represented graphically on a number line.

COUNTING NUMBERS
1. NATURAL/ COUNTING NUMBERS- are the numbers we use in counting things, that is
{1,2,3,4,……}.
2. WHOLE NUMBERS- are numbers consisting of the set of natural or counting numbers and
zero.
3. Integers- ARE THE RESULT OF THE UNION OF THE SET OF WHOLE NUMBERS AND THE
NEGATIVE OF COUNTING NUMBERS.e.g. {-1,1,2, -2, -3,…}
a
4. RATIONAL NUMBERS- are numbers that can be expressed as a quotient of two integers.
b
The integer a is the numerator while the integer b, which cannot be 0 is the denominator.

This set includes fractions and some decimal numbers.. e.g. {5.34, 0.1313…

5. IRRATIONAL NUMBERS- are numbers that cannot be expressed as a quotient of two
b
integers. Every irrational number may be represented by a decimal that neither repeats nor
terminates. e.g {
6. Real Numbers- are any of the numbers from the preceding subsets. They can be found on
the real number line. The union of rational numbers and irrational numbers is the set of real
numbers.

They say that sets of real numbers is so dense that there exist infinite real numbers between any two
real numbers.

The real number line is constructed in such a way that the numbers are arranged in increasing order
from left to right. Arrowheads on both end indicates that the line is continuous in both directions, one
towards negative infinity and one towards the positive infinity.

For the convenience, the + sign will not be indicated for all positive integers and for all positive real
numbers, for that matter unless

From the real number line, the following can be deduced.

1. The integers increase in value from left to right.
2. The smallest positive integer is 1.
3. The largest negative integer is -1.
4. The least or largest valued integer cannot be determined.
5. Zero is neither positive nor negative.
6. All negative integers are less than 0.
7. All positive integers are greater than zero.

Any real number can be represented by a point on a number line. This is made possible by one-to-one
correspondence between the elements of the set of real numbers and the points on the line. That is for
every real number, there corresponds a point on the number line, and for every point on the number
line, there corresponds a unique number.

Let us try to locate and plot the following sets of numbers on a number line. Then arrange them in
incresing and decresing order.

As you can see in number 1 we have a fraction. And there is no fraction form in our number line. SO
3
what we are going to do first is express the fraction from into decimal form. – =−1.5 again as you can
2
there is no decimal number in the number line. How are we going to find the -1.5 in our number line?
First, we are going to find the whole number which is 1 and then the decimal number is .5. That means -
1.5 lies between the -1 and -2.
