Absolute History

Absolute History is a youtube channel which was created two years ago and has been
posting interesting historical videos uploaded at least every week that can be up to an hour
long. Thanks to its quite intriguing content, it now has more than a million subscribers. The
channel works with a British historians’ team and usually films their videos in documentary
style. Absolute History’s team has described the channel as “the home of fun, shocking and
curious tales from throughout history”. Because of the locations and specialties of the team’s
historians, the channel usually leans on British history. Despite this, it has many other videos
telling about the histories of various regions all over the world as well. With its focus on the
extraordinary side of history which is not generally dwelled on in conventional history books,
Absolute History channel can contribute to the advancement of historical knowledge for a
couple of reasons.
Firstly, the youtube channel’s plenty of videos about British history with conspicuous
titles both attract people and are quite informative. These videos have titles such as “Why
King Charles I Was Britain’s Most Hated Monarch”, “The Queen’s Inimitable Relationship
With Her Mother”, “Why Bloody Mary Hated Queen Elizabeth I”, “How Queen Victoria’s
Grandson Became Hitler’s Favourite”, “How to Cook Like a Tudor”, “The Untold Horros of
Tudor Dentistry”, “The Secrets of Edwardian Lace-Making”, “What Fishing Was Like During
the Edwardian Era”, “How to Make Edwardian Cheese”, “The Strange Ingredients of
Victorian Birth Control”, and many more.
Secondly, Absolute History’s videos about the history of different regions throughout
the world can help the channel reach to even a larger audience with various interests. “Who
Was the Black Prince of Jerusalem”, “What Was the Real Cleopatra Like”, “What Happened
to the Last Royal Family of Myanmar”, “Did Ramessess II Love Nefertari?”, “The Royal
Family Behind Egypt’s Golden Age”, “What Was Life Like For Female Pharaohs?”, “The
First Black Woman in the US Congress”, “The Incredible Story of Rosa Parks” and many
more video titles suggest this.
In conclusion, I think this channel is an important contribution to the pool of other
historical youtube channels with its unconventional style and broad range of topics. As it can
be understood from the titles themselves, while the channel talks about known historical eras
and people, their choice of what exactly to focus about them is quite interesting. With the help
of these videos, people can not only learn a thing or two about both what the history books
they are used to teach them but also what they do not teach them. History teaching as most of
as are used to surely matters. However, to understand history better, Absolute History’s ways
can illuminate the way.
