D.Q:1 Why did ancient civilizations grow near rivers? Name some of the ancient civilizations and the regions
where they flourished.

Ans: The ancient civilizations grew near the rivers because;

1) Rivers provided water for human survival.


2) Rivers provided water for their animals and crops.
3) Rivers provided fertile soil for agriculture.
4) Rivers were used for transporting goods and people.
5) Rivers provided fish and hunting animals for their food.

Some ancient civilizations:

1) Indus Valley Civilization in subcontinent of India along the River Indus.


2) Egyptian Civilization in Egypt along the River Nile.
3) Mesopotamia in Iraq between two rivers Euphrates and Tigris.
4) Chine’s civilization in China along Yellow.
5) Roman civilization in Rome along the river Tiber.

Sh.Q:3 What is meant by ‘cradle of civilizations’ and which region does this term refer to?

Ans: The Fertile Crescent also called the” cradle of civilization”, .is found in Iraq. The earliest
civilizations were established in The Fertle Crescent, including the Sumerians.
This term refer to Mesopotamia in modern Iraq.

Sh.Q:4Why did ancient Mesopotamia come to be known as the ;Fertile Crescent”

Ans: Mesopotamia is known as ‘fertile Crescent” because it was the area between the two rivers
Euphrates and Tigris. These rivers produced fertile soil and stable supply of water for irrigation and
farming.

Sh.Q:7 Name the Language of the Mesopotamians and explain its importance in History.

Ans: The Mesopotamian language was known as Sumerian and the script was called the Cuneiform.
One important feature of Mesopotamian civilization is that it was one of the four places where writing
was invented.
