Leading Provider of Specialty Resins and Separation Solutions

General Protocol of a Resin Trial

This document describes the four steps of a trial with 100 ml of resin. When 100 ml of
resin is used in your trial, then 1 BV is 100 ml.

1. Preparing Trial Resin

a) Use deionized water to transfer 100 ml of the sample into a graduated cylinder,
as shown in the picture below.

b) Vertically shake the graduated cylinder up and down to prevent void among
resin beads, until the actual volume reaches 100 ml, as shown in the pictures
below.

2. Loading the Glass Column with Resin

a) Select a column with a height/diameter ratio between 6:1 and 9:1, as shown in
the picture below.

b) Use DI water to transfer the resin from the graduated cylinder to the column, as
shown in the picture below.

c) Ensure the column keeps vertical and the resin is submerged with some water,
as shown in the picture below.

3. Carrying Out the Trial

a) Ensure your liquor flows through the resin at 2 BV/h (200 ml/h), as shown in the
picture below. Lower the flowrate when necessary.

4. Checking Trial Result

a) For a trial with sugar/starch sweetener syrup

Do not check the treatment result until the outlet brix meets your requirements.
Proceed with the trial until the outlet color/conductivity no longer meets your

requirements.

b) For a trial with other liquors

Do not check or use the first BV (100 ml) of the treated outlet liquor. Proceed
with the trial until the outlet liquor parameters no longer meet your requirements.

5. Caution
a) Bubbles (see picture below) among beads have a negative impact on resin
performance. If bubbles are found, stir slightly with a rod to remove them.

b) A leaning column will decrease the percentage of resin actually in use. Keep
the column vertical.

c) Once the trial starts, feed you liquor continuously; otherwise, the resin may dry
or bubbles may occur.

In case that you have to suspend a trial, ensure there is always some liquor
above the resin. For a trial with sugar/starch sweetener syrup, in case you have
to suspend it for over 15 hours, to prevent syrup fermentation flush the syrup
away from resin beads using DI water. Then close the column valve and ensure
there is some water above the resin.
