Facilities and Equipment Used in Volleyball

Volleyball is a popular sport that can be played both indoors and outdoors. It requires a variety of
specialized equipment and facilities to be played safely and effectively.
➢ VOLLEYBALL COURT – the court is rectangular measuring 18 by 9 meters surrounded by a free
zone which is a minimum of 3 meters wide on all sides.
• LINES ON THE COURT - the marks that serves as the boundaries of a court. All marks are
measured 5 cm (2 inch) wide. They must be in a light color.
 Boundary Line: two sidelines and two end lines mark the playing court.
 Center Line: the boundary that runs under the net and divides the court into two
equal halves.
 Attack Line: on each court, an attack line, whose rear edge is drawn 3 meters back
from the axis of the center line, marks the front zone.
• ZONES AND AREAS
 Front Zone: three (3) meters from the center line.
 Back Zone: six (6) meters from the attack line to the end line.
 Service Zone: nine (9) meters wide behind from each end line outside the playing
court.
 Substitution Zone: 1. 75 meters from the sideline of each front zone.
 Libero Replacement Zone: the free zone on the side of each team benches. The
space beside the subzone.
 Warm-up Area: is measured 3 by 3 meters and is located proportioned to wards the
end of the free zone.
 Penalty Area: is located at the back of each team bench with at least one by one
meter.
➢ BALL
• Has a spherical or round form and has 18 rectangular panels that are made of synthetic
or genuine leather, arranged in six identical sections of three panels each, wrapped
around a bladder.
• It has a diameter of 20.7-21.3 cm and circumference of 65-67 cm. The weight of a
Volleyball is between 260-280 g with a pressure between 4.26-4.61 psi (pounds per
square inch)
➢ NET
• the primary obstacle and separating element between the two teams in a game of
volleyball. Splitting the court down the middle. Volleyball nets are typically made with
black nylon netting with white headbands.
• The net is 1 m wide and 9.50 to 10 meters long (with 25 to 50 cm on each side of the
side bands), made of 10 cm square black mesh.
• Height of the net
→ 2.43 meter for MEN
→ 2.24 meter for WOMEN
• At its top a horizontal band, 7 cm wide, made of two-fold white canvas, is sewn along its
full length.
• At the bottom of the net there is another horizontal band, 5cm wide, similar to the top
band.
• SIDE BANDS – two white bands are fastened vertically to the net and placed directly
above each sideline. They are 5 cm wide and 1 m long, and are considered as part of the
net.
➢ POST

the post is placed vertically in the center line where the net placed tied in the post. They
are 2.55 meters high and preferably adjustable.
➢ ANTENNAE
• Two antennae or rods are attached to the net above the sidelines. The antenna is
flexible rod. 1.8 m long and 10 mm in diameter and made of fiberglass or similar
material. The rod passes 80 cm vertically up from the sidelines and mark the boundaries
for where the ball can be played.
➢ PENALTY CARDS
• Yellow card – given by the officials to a player or coach as a warning of misconduct. Two
yellow card results in an automatic red card.
• Red card – given by the official to a player or coach for flagrant misconduct resulting in a
point/side out to the opponent. Results in automatic ejection and a point/side out for
the opponent.
• Yellow cards are issued to warn players of bad conduct without a penalty being
enforced. Continual misconduct will lead to a red card and a sanction being applied. This
may be for their team to lose the point or to lose service if they have possession.
• If the referee holds up both the red and yellow card, then this is a dismissal, and the
player must leave the court for the rest of the set.
➢ REFEREE STAND / MATCH OFFICIAL’S STAND
• the first official is positioned on a stand above the court and directly perpendicular to
the center line/net. From this elevated position they can see all the court and determine
touches of the top net band by players and the ball.
➢ SCORE BOARD
• Is a large board for publicly displaying the score in the game
➢ SCORE SHEET
• Volleyball Score Sheet is used to record a point-by-point account of the match and
individual statistics as well as service order. At the end of the match, the 1st referee
checks the score sheet for accuracy, and then signs it.
➢ WHISTLE
• Is used to call captains over for the pre-match coin toss, to start and end warm-up
period, and to start and end rallies. The whistle is your means to get attention of the
players/participants.
