School Calendar

7
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

School Day
The school day begins at 7:00am. By 7:10am students are expected to be in their
classrooms and ready for the school day to commence. It is vitally important that
students are come on time as the register will be taken at 7:00am and any important
announcements will be made.

The day is organised into 30-minute blocks. Many subjects will occupy consecutive
blocks to allow for deep study of a subject or a topic.

Assembly

Assemblies are an opportunity for students to come together. They may be Whole
School, Key Stage or Year Group assemblies. This time will be used to further the
school’s goals and be an opportunity to express the values of the school. It is expected
that every student will have an opportunity to take part in an assembly.

General Information
School Visitors

At RIS we maintain a safe, healthy environment that supports learning. Members of

the school community and visitors are able to visit the school when the site is open.
Visitors are expected to contact the school office in advance. This will allow the office
to contact relevant people in advance of a visit and to notify security.

Persons visiting the school must sign in at security. At which time their government
issued ID will be checked and retained for the duration of their visit. During their visit
school ID cards must be visibly displayed, any person not displaying ID will be
challenged by staff.

Visits to classrooms are not allowed during teaching hours unless explicitly
authorised by the Principal and under the supervision of a member of staff.

The school reserves the right to refuse entry to any person deemed a risk to the
learning environment.

Communication

At RIS we foster a nurturing and caring environment for all students. RIS strives for
confidentiality in all private communication. RIS staff, parents, students and
stakeholders share in this responsibility. Respecting the privacy of communication
is a responsibility shared by all. Talking with people not directly involved in a situation
is inappropriate.

Please notify the school administration if you become aware of a situation that
threatens the health and safety of an individual. Communication related to
requesting appointments should bear in mind teacher timetables and that after
school can be difficult owing to transportation requirements.

Respect is a cornerstone of education. Please do not discuss student issues in

hallways in front of others.

School Uniform

Richmond International School students adhere to a dress code that we believe

promotes a sense of orderliness and school community. This also provides field trip
security. Additionally, a uniform reduces “fashion competition”. We aim to have
students wearing similar, if not necessarily identical, outfits that engender a feeling
of community and avoid clothes conscious social situations.

Students wear navy blue trousers, shorts, or checked skirts and a beige polo shirt
(short or long sleeved) with the RIS logo. A navy-blue fleece hoodie with the RIS

9
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

logo can be worn in the cooler weather.

Footwear
• All students wear laced shoes or entirely closed slip-on black shoes.
• Athletic shoes or sneakers are acceptable with the PE kits.
• "flip-flops", "thong" sandals, and other beach-type footwear are not
appropriate for school at all times.

Caps or hats in buildings are inappropriate and are not acceptable during class time.
Caps warn in class are subject to confiscation for the rest of the school day.

All students are expected to be well groomed and appropriately dressed at school
or during school-related functions off school. Immodest or distracting attire is
inappropriate in our multi-cultural setting. Ear jewellery should be limited to studs.
(This interpretation can extend to haircuts, hair dyes, jewellery, makeup, body art or
other aspects of personal appearance.)

There are occasionally “dress-down days” on which students are not required to
wear the school uniform. These may occur usually in connection with a special
holiday or event and will be announced by the school administration. On those days,
students may choose their own clothing. However, this must look neat and
presentable, large logos are not permitted and inappropriate words or slogans for
an educational environment are not allowed.

Students will normally wear the school uniform for field trips, unless otherwise
indicated on the permission form.

Students who do not have the proper school attire may be sent from their class to
the school office, where they can phone home to have proper clothing sent to school.

Parent Conferences

RIS administration is happy to meet with parents, guardians and students at all
times. However, to avoid waiting, it is advised that appointments should be made
through the school office.

Parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled throughout the year and will provide an
opportunity to discuss progress and reports. Please be punctual to any appointment
made. Meetings may be arranged throughout the year as needs arise.

10
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

School Photographs

Please note that we are sensitive to some parents’ wishes that their child/ren should
not appear in any school photos that might appear in the public domain (e.g., on the
school website, in the local paper, etc.). Therefore, parents who do not want their
child’s photograph to appear in the public domain should inform the Principal in writing.

Pets on Campus

Pets are not allowed on campus. If you wish to bring a pet onto campus, prior
arrangements must be made through the Principal.

Facility Rental

RIS facilities can be rented to non-profit and profit-making groups, however this must
be for activities that would be beneficial to the RIS community. Applications for use
must be made via a Facilities Usage Form to be submitted for approval to the
Principal. The school will charge a fee for these facility uses to cover costs of utilities,
security, and cleaning staff as needed.

Transportation (Optional Bus Service)

Transport is an optional service and children are encouraged to utilise school buses.
RIS has its own fleet of buses to provide transportation to and from school for RIS
students. Children are picked up and dropped from the main road as close to the
residence as is safely possible within the route and time limitations. While we make
every effort to ensure that the service is both safe and efficient, please keep in mind
that this is not a door-to-door service. We are working under local constraints.

Bus Conduct Expectations

Getting children to and from school safely each day is a serious responsibility. It is
essential for all children on RIS buses to follow the below rules for the safety of all
the riders.

Riders will:
• Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early
• Stay off the road while waiting for the bus
• Avoid walking directly in front of the bus
• Be careful getting on and off and finding a seat
• Remain seated at all times and with their seat belt securely fastened
• Not talk to or distract the bus driver, in any way
• Keep all body parts inside the bus while riding
• Always use appropriate language and speak in reasonable tones inside the
bus
• Be respectful and responsible toward others
• Always keep the bus clean by using the dustbin if necessary for wrappers,

11
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

juice box etc...

• Listen to and follow the instructions of the bus monitor and teachers on the
bus.

School ‘Drop Off’ & ‘Pick Up’ Guidelines

These will be communicated independently due to the ongoing pandemic.

Attendance

Richmond International School has high aspirations for all our students, in order for
students to achieve their potential they need to be in class for as many sessions as
possible. Correct attendance records play an important role in the school. They allow
the school to identify students who are not in school and so whom may need additional
support as well as being vital in the event of an emergency that requires evacuation
of the building.

Morning registration takes place between 7:00 am and 7:10 am. Students arriving after
this time are late and will be recorded on registers as late. Students arriving after 8:00
am require a late slip from the office before being allowed into class. Afternoon
registers are completed between 1:25 pm - 1:30 pm and reflect attendance of the day.

Types of Absence

There are 4 main types of absence:

• Authorised where the school has been informed of the absence by the parents
and this reason has been accepted by the Principal.
• Unauthorised where the school has been given no information by the parents.
• Illness where the school receives a note from the nurse or a doctor.
• Closure where the school has been closed unexpectedly.

Absences can be altered to illnesses only when a medical note from a doctor is
provided. Illnesses reported by parents are characterised as authorised absences.

Each application for leave of absence during term time is considered individually by
the Principal, taking into account the student’s overall attendance and reasons for
absence. Medical appointments should be scheduled outside of school time where
possible to avoid lost learning time.

Absences where the school has been closed do not count towards child’s absence
from school. This will not appear in any calculation of a child’s absence.

The parents or guardians of students who need to leave school early for any reason
MUST make a request directly to the Principal. A note signed by the Principal will be
sent to the teacher.

12
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

Any parent or guardian requesting to take their child from class will be directed to the
Administration office first to inform the matter. It is not acceptable for a parent to collect
a child for sickness unless the school nurse has contacted home (in this case the
Principal does not need to be informed).

Repeated Lateness

If a student is late more than 10 times, a letter is sent home by the Principal asking
the parents to ensure their child arrives on time. Letters will include a warning that all
late attendances are recorded on reports, they are referred to in any reference
requests for school transfers and the school will carefully consider any request for re-
registration the following academic year.

Further action may be taken should this lateness continue.

If a child is picked up late from school more than 10 times will have a letter sent home
by the Principal. Letters will request that parents be punctual in picking up their
children.

Children are expected to have an attendance record of at least 85%. If this is not the
case, Richmond International School will have to determine whether it has a place to
offer that child for the next academic year. This will take into account medical
absences and authorised absences.

Progress Reports

Progress Reports are issued termly and constitute a major form of school-to-parent
communication. See the Assessment Guidelines for our expectations in regard to
Progress Reports, which include in-depth narrative commentary on each individual
child.

Students who withdraw within three weeks of a normal Progress Report issuance will
not receive an early report. The Progress Report will be forwarded to the parents or
the office when it is issued on the regular date. Students leaving more than three
weeks prior to a Progress Report issuance will receive a special interim report, listing
the progress of the students at the time of withdrawal. Progress reports, reference
letters, or letters of attendance are not issued if there is pending student account with
the finance office.

13
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

Smoking

RIS is a non-smoking environment, indoors and out – including school parking areas.

Temporary Guardian

If parents or the legal guardian leaves the State of Qatar temporarily and leaves a
child(ren) in the care of someone else, they are required to notify the school in advance
and give all dates of their absence, and the names, numbers and pertinent information
of the temporary guardian. Students should be left in the guardianship of a responsible
adult who can communicate with the school if needed.

Parents Code of Conduct

RIS expect parents and/or guardians to show respect and concern for others by:
• supporting the respectful ethos of the school by setting a good example in their own
speech and behaviour towards all members of the school community.
• working together with teachers for the benefit of children. This includes approaching
the school to resolve any issues of concern and to discuss and clarify specific events
in order to bring about a positive solution.
• correcting own child’s behaviour, especially in public where it could otherwise lead to
conflict, aggressive or unsafe behaviour.
• respecting the school environment, including keeping the school tidy by not littering.
• observing school’s security measures

In order to support a peaceful and safe school environment, the school cannot tolerate:
• disruptive behaviour, which interferes with the operation of a classroom, an office area
or any other part of the school grounds. This includes words or actions that bring the
institution into disrepute or gravely affect the conduct of school business.
• using loud and/or offensive language or displaying temper.
• threatening harm or the use of physical aggression towards another adult or child. This
includes approaching someone else’s child in order to discuss or chastise them and
physical punishment against your own child on school premises.
• damaging or destroying school property.
• abusive or threatening emails, phone calls, social network messages or other
communications.
• chain email communications that elicit unsolicited support for a concern or complaint
and do not follow appropriate lines of communication.

Violations of the Parent Code of Conduct will be reported to the appropriate

administration and may result in a parent and/or guardian being restricted from
entering the school grounds to safeguard the school community. In extreme cases
involving a major violation and/or repeated violations of the parent code of conduct,
disenrollment of the parents’ children from RIS may be necessary and the local
authorities involved.

Admissions Policy
Richmond International School’s Admission policy is determined by the Principal in
conjunction with the Board of Directors. For more information on the admission policy,
please go to the link on the school website or e-mail the admissions team:
admissions@richmonddoha.com.

Discontinuation of Enrolment

Richmond International School is an inclusive school. A positive, collaborative working

relationship between the school and a student’s parents/ guardians is essential to the
fulfilment of the School’s Mission. As such, the school does not tolerate behaviour that
is detrimental to the safety, integrity, or dignity of any individual or group. The school
reserves the right to discontinue enrolment if it concludes that the actions of a
student/parent/guardian make such a relationship impossible or otherwise seriously
interfere with the RIS’s accomplishment of its educational purpose

Withdrawal

Withdrawal requires written notice to be delivered to the Admissions Department (e-

mail or hard copy), any other communication will not constitute withdrawal. A
withdrawal notice will not be effective until received and acknowledged by the
Admissions Department.

Students will not receive final progress reports until such time as the school has
ascertained that their bills have been paid and all school owned material has been
returned.

Transferring to Another School

RIS understands the transient nature of the school community. With reasonable
notice, the administration will provide appropriate documentation to support enrolment
to another school. Students transferring out of RIS, who have been in attendance for
up to one full academic year and are in good standing, will receive copies of all report
cards, standardised tests, and an official school letter confirming dates of enrolment.
Students transferring out of RIS who have been in attendance for more than one full
academic year and are in good standing, will receive the same documentation and
may be entitled to specific recommendation materials. For students meeting the
enrolment length requirements, all requests for recommendation materials and/or
completion of such forms must be requested through the respective administrative
office. RIS will not accept requests to complete lengthy application materials on behalf
of the receiving school. In all cases, RIS reserves the right to determine the
appropriate level of recommendation materials that will be provided to departing
students.

RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

Lunch Box Policy

Richmond International School recognises that our students come from diverse home
backgrounds, cultures and ethnic groups. RIS aims to meet the needs of all these
groups of children and ensure equality and equity of provision.

RIS also recognises that some children are ‘fussy’ eaters and that it is a major step to
get some children to eat anything at all. We would want parents to let us know if this
is the case, so that we can deal with such children sensitively and with encouragement
and praise for what they have eaten.

Worldwide, it is recognised that there is an issue with obesity in the adult and child
populations. We are committed to ensuring that our children are as healthy as
possible.

Research shows that there may be a direct link between foods/drinks and their
additives and children’s behaviour and progress at school.

Guidelines

The following guidelines for lunchbox contents and frequency of serving for each item
are based on international research.

Packed lunches can have items such as:

• At least one portion of fruits and vegetables every day.

• A portion of protein (Meat, fish or other source of non-dairy protein, e.g., lentils,
chickpeas, and houmous) every day.
• Dairy food, e.g., cheese, yoghurt, laban every day.
• A healthy starchy food such as pasta and bread.

Packed lunches must NOT contain:

• Nuts (see below).
• Fizzy drinks
• Potato chips
• Confectionary
• Fries

Children must not swap food because of allergy concerns.

Nuts

Richmond International School is a no nut school. Parents, teachers and students all
have a responsibility to ensure that no nuts, nut products and items containing nuts
are not brought into the school.

16
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

If nuts are sent into school with a student, they must be confiscated and kept in a safe
location. At the end of the school day, they should be handed to the parent and the
policy explained. If nuts are sent on multiple occasions, the Principal should be
informed to take further action.

Monitoring and review

On a daily basis, staff in the school will see what children have in their lunchboxes.
This will provide an opportunity for staff to discuss with children, their lunchboxes and
compliment them on healthy choices. Staff will be aware of children who bring high
fat/sugar content food on a daily basis.

No child will be made to feel ashamed of their lunchbox contents. However, we may
send parents a reminder of this policy if lunchbox contents regularly fall short of the
expectations in this policy. However, we hope to work with all parents to secure their
children’s health and equip them to live independent, healthy lifestyles in the future.
We have the best interests of the children at heart.

Water

RIS provides free water during the day from water fountains. Students are encouraged
to bring refillable water bottles and avoid single-use plastic bottles. Students are
allowed to drink water during all appropriate times of the day including lessons, with
the exclusion of timetabled Science experiments, or any other time where Health and
Safety concerns prohibit consumption of food or drink.

Class Parties

Homeroom teachers will plan no more than a total of three class parties per school
year and structure them around educationally relevant themes. Birthday celebrations
may be held in addition to classroom parties but are restricted to no more than 30
minutes time in conjunction with the break periods or the end of the school day.

Class party’s must be approved by the Principal in advance. Menus for birthday parties
must be discussed in advance with the classroom teacher to ensure that they are in
line with the Lunch Box Guidelines.

Cake and cupcakes to celebrate birthdays can only be sent to the school individually
wrapped and portioned so that receiving parents can choose if they wish their child to
consume them.

Invitations to private birthday parties may be distributed at school ONLY if all children
in the class are to be invited.

Nursing Office Policy and Procedures

A student’s health status is directly related to his or her ability to learn. Children with
unmet health needs have a difficult time engaging in the educational process. The
School Nurse is a member of the Learning Support team. If a student is on any type
of medication, for any reason, please inform the school nurse’s office.

Role of the School Nurse

The registered professional school nurse is the leader in the school community to
oversee school health policies and programs. The school nurse serves in a pivotal role
to provide expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and
promotion of health education. This includes monitoring local, regional and global
health issues and creating response protocols for larger health issues. Using clinical
knowledge and judgment, the school nurse provides health care to students and staff,
performs health screenings and coordinates referrals to the medical home or private
healthcare provider. The school nurse serves as a liaison between school personnel,
family, community and healthcare providers to advocate for health care and a healthy
school environment

Admission’s Documents contain a simple, yet effective Health History Form Items
included:
• Medication (if any)
• Past Medical History or Concern
• Treatment Consent form
• Allergies

This form is copied and placed in the student’s file in the nurse’s office upon admission.

Emergency and First Aid Protocol

Students are released to the Nurse’s office when a teacher writes a permission slip,
or when the student visits on their own during a break or lunch. The permission slip
contains the name, grade, time, teacher’s signature, and reason for the visit. This
same note is returned to the student and passed back to the teacher when the student
returns to class. In most of these situations, parents are not contacted. Simple first aid
is administered. The visit is recorded in the student’s medical file in the Nurse’s office.

• No parental contact- Minor First Aid - Visits usually last 5 minutes

• Common Symptoms: allergies, cuts, falls, dry, itchy, headache

Most visits are treated quickly and with over-the-counter medication, eye drops and
Vaseline. Every visit is recorded in the student file and in the Nurse’s logbook. If
parents are contacted, this is also recorded. School Administration rarely know of
these visits. Parents and/or Guardians who have not approved or signed the treatment
consent form to give over the counter medications will be called before any
medications are administered.

Procedure for EpiPen Use

1. The epinephrine auto-injectors are kept in RIS school nurse office exclusively
with the mutual understanding between the parent and the school
administrators for the emergency use in case of anaphylactic shock.
2. A physician provides a written order that specifies the quantity of epinephrine
auto-injectors to be furnished.
3. EpiPen will be stored in SNO, properly labelled with the correct student name
and class.

Procedure for Head Lice

Children with active lice will be sent home immediately. All nits must be removed after
receiving a treatment. Children may be checked by the school nurse before re-entry
to classroom is allowed.

Procedure for Nebuliser and Inhalers

• Only with doctor’s prescription and instructions, will our SNO treat a student
with nebulization.
• If a student has an inhaler, please share the prescription with the SNO and
keep a copy of the prescription with inhaler so that correct use occurs. Many
students self-medicate with inhalers, and the SNO hopes to ensure correct
dosage of inhaler medications.
• If the SNO notices a child with an inhaler, they may contact the family for more
information. Child safety is our utmost concern.

Field Trip First Aid Kits

When on a class trip or field trip, it’s important to be prepared for those minor first aid
emergencies. The SNO has First Aid Kits which should be collected from School
Nurses Office and carried with the teacher leaders for the outing. 48 hours notice is
required to make sure that the First Aid Kit is ready and organized.

Parental/Guardian Contact- Making Decisions with the Nurse’s Office

When a student is sick and being released from regular classes:

• The Nurse calls the family for pick-up. The child stays in the nurse’s office until pick-
up.
• The Nurse informs RIS Administration and the school office that the student is excused
from classes at school and are awaiting pick-up.
• A Driver/Parent/Guardian picks up the student from the nurse’s office, then they take
the permission slip from SNO to RIS secretaries, then an exit pass is given to the
student and their caregiver.
• Teachers will be informed by the SNO if a student is leaving campus or “resting” in the
SNO.

19
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

Common Symptoms may include: fever, suspected fracture, dislocation, bleeding

that doesn’t stop, head injury, known allergic reaction, or if the child has a special
concern that has been documented on the Health History Form completed upon
admission and stored with the Admission’s office.

Medical Certificates for Sick Leave

Please submit medical certificates to RIS secretaries if a child has been absent. These
documents are passed to the registrar’s office and to the school nurse’s office.

If students do not provide a medical certificate the absence will be treated as

unexcused. If a student has a large number of unexcused absences this will be
grounds for not offering admission in subsequent years.

Covid-19

Richmond International School has robust Covid-19 policies that have been developed
following guidance received from the relevant Ministries and external sources. Any
person displaying symptoms should not attend the school site and should seek advice
from medical professionals. Any person with a temperature above 38c will not be
allowed access to the site.

More Information

All health policies are updated regularly and they are available in the Nurse’s office.
Please stop by the Nurse’s office if you have any questions.

Educational Program
Richmond International School is a British Curriculum school. It broadly follows the
National Curriculum for England, making adjustments to meet local requirements.
For Arabic, Islamic Studies and Qatar History, RIS follows the curriculum provided
by the Ministry of Education.

The Early Years Program (KG1 KG2)

The Early Years Program has two levels KG1 (3+Years) and KG2 (4+ years). Both
years emphasise learning through play. The program recognises that children are
different from adults in the way in which they think, develop and learn.

The Primary Program (Years 1-6)

The Primary curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the ‘international student’
and ‘third-culture child’. The Edexcel IPrimary Curriculum is introduced in Year 1 and
comprises Key Stage 1 (Years 1-2) and Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6). Each Key Stage
has specific goals for attainment and achievement.

Field Trips

Richmond International School (RIS) recognises that educational visits are a vital
part of the schools’ curriculum. Educational visits that are planned add value to the
curriculum, be inclusive and are safe. Field trips are designed to broaden the horizon
and provide opportunities that are generally not available on the school site.

Permission forms for trips must be completed and returned one working day before
any planned visit. Students’ behaviour at all times must meet the expectations of the
school. Attendance on school trips is at the discretion of the school for each
individual student. School Uniform must be worn on Field Trips and off-site
excursions unless the specific school excursion requires alternate apparel to be
worn (at request of teacher).

Physical Education

Physical Education (PE) is a valuable part of the RIS curriculum. PE provides an

opportunity for students to develop their minds, bodies and spirits. Physical
Education is varied and will include individual and team activities.

It is expected that all students take part in all sessions. PE is an assessed subject;
non-participation will have a negative impact on reports. Where a student is unable
to take part, a note from a medical practitioner should be provided. If an injury
happens during the school day that would preclude participation in PE, the school
nurse will inform the relevant teaching staff.

During PE sessions appropriate PE uniform is expected to be worn.

Homework Policy

Homework will be assigned as independent learning that reinforces skills and

understanding already taught at school. Teachers may change the amount and
regularity of homework but should provide students with opportunities to reinforce
learning at home and pursue enrichment and further understanding where strong
student interest is evident.

The purpose of all types of homework is to ensure it is both effective in promoting

high quality student learning and achievement and it nurtures a desire for students
to keep learning. Effective homework assignments:
1. are curriculum based and meet the developmental and individual needs of
the student through differentiation and modification.
2. should be commented on to provide feedback for future learning.
3. are designed to require no additional teaching outside the classroom and are
engaging and relevant to student learning. Students understand what is
expected of them before leaving school.
4. do not require resources or technology to which students may not have
access.
5. may be designed to involve parents/guardians in supporting their children’s
learning but should not teach new concepts.

Where appropriate, there will be progressive consequences for incomplete

homework. Punitive measures will not be used as they are not appropriate, and they
provide powerful disincentives.

Amount of Homework

Kindergarten
Homework should not be assigned to Kindergarten students. There is a strong
connection between parental involvement and student achievement. As a result,
families are encouraged to engage in early learning activities such as playing, talking
and reading together in English or in the family’s first language. Teachers may

22
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

provide resources to support home-based early learning activities.

Years 1 to 6
There is a strong connection between reading to or with primary children every day
in English or in one’s first language and student achievement. As a result, homework
assigned in the early grades shall more often take the form of reading, playing a
variety of games, having discussions and interactive activities such as building and
cooking with the family. In the late Primary and Secondary Years, effective
homework may begin to take the form of independent work. In both cases, homework
assigned for completion, practice, preparation or extension should be clearly
articulated and differentiated to reflect the unique needs of the child.

Academic Honesty Policy

The school's Honour Code is as follows:

"I realise that copying and presenting the work of someone else as if it were my own
is dishonest. I realise that it is my responsibility not only to adhere to the honour
code, but also to report to the teacher any such dishonesty of which I am aware.
Whether I myself copy the work of someone else, give my own work for someone
else to copy, or tolerate such action in others, I am involved to one degree or another
of academic dishonesty."

Teachers will discuss this code with students to ensure understanding.

Assessment Policy

At Richmond International School we believe that assessment is an essential tool in

understanding not only a student’s ability, but also allows for the monitoring of
progress, identifying areas for improvement, and allowing for reflection by students.

The focus of this policy document is summative assessment, or assessment of

learning, which refers to the process of judging the quality of student learning on the
basis of established criteria and assigning a value to represent that quality. It
accurately summarises and communicates to students, parents, other teachers,
employers, and institutions of further education what students know and can do with
respect to the curriculum. Assessment of learning provides evidence of student
achievement at strategic times throughout the grade/course, often at the end of a
period of learning.

Evidence of student achievement is collected over time from three different

sources— observations, conversations, and student products. Using multiple
sources of evidence increases the reliability and validity of the assessment of
student achievement.

Assessment tasks used for summative purposes may be in the form of rich
performance tasks, demonstrations, projects, and/or essays as well as tests or

23
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

exams and/or assignments. To ensure equity for all students, assessment tasks
being used to provide evidence of achievement are to be completed, whenever
possible, under the supervision of a teacher. Care should be taken to distinguish
between homework assignments designed to be graded from homework assigned
in order to consolidate knowledge or skills, or as preparation for future class work.

The assessment of student learning is the responsibility of the teacher. Teachers will
take various considerations into account before making a decision about the grade
to be entered on a report card. The teacher will consider all evidence collected
through assessment tasks that the student has completed or submitted, the number
of tests/ exams or assignments that were not completed or submitted, and the
evidence of achievement that is available in a particular grade or course.

In addition, the teacher will consider that some evidence carries greater weight than
other evidence; for example, some performance tasks are richer and reveal more
about students’ skills and knowledge than others. Teachers will weigh all evidence
of student achievement in light of these considerations and will use their professional
judgment to determine the student’s report card grade. The report card grade
represents a student’s overall achievement, as demonstrated to that point in time.

Determining a grade will involve teachers’ professional judgment. This includes the
interpretation of evidence and should reflect the student’s most consistent level of
achievement, with special consideration given to more recent evidence. Not all
assessment task scores need to be included.

The Principal will have a critical role to play in ensuring that there is a common
understanding among all staff about the process for determining the final grade.
They are consequently expected to exercise their leadership and work
collaboratively with teachers to ensure common and equitable grading practices that
follow departmental and divisional policies.

For Year 1-6 there will be a written assessment in every subject, except PE, at the
end of each term. There will be assessments during the terms. The times and dates
of these will be communicated in advance. Exams may be modular or cumulative,
unless otherwise communicated exams will assess what has been taught across the
entire year.

We use exam papers for some subjects created and supplied by our book supplier.
The end of year examinations for English and Maths are included in this. These
papers will be unseen by the teachers as they cover the entire school year.

Language Policy

The primary language of communication and instruction at RIS is English.

RIS will encourage students' understanding and appreciation of the host country's
language and culture. Arabic and Qatar History will be offered specifically within the
curriculum from KG to Year 6.

24
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

Communication in English
All RIS students should have expectations for thinking, inquiring and communicating
in English.

RIS embraces learner diversity; however, it will only enrol students whose educational
needs can be met by the School. Therefore, upon admission, students must meet the
English language requirements to ensure academic success. RIS will provide a
variety of instructional strategies, including but not limited to, intensive instruction, in
class assistance, and program modifications.

All members of the RIS community should provide reasonable support for
development of appropriate abilities to communicate in English.

Communication in Languages other than English

All students will be required to study an additional language. RIS will offer instruction
in selected Foreign Languages within the school day beginning in Year 1.

Communication to parents should be in English in the first instance. Where parents

require language support the school will endeavour to provide this where possible.
Admission applications to the school will be in English, where this will not be a burden
on the school applications may be accepted in other languages and in all instances
when authorised by the Principal.

General Disciplinary Procedures

RIS is a learning environment that allows students to learn and grow from their
mistakes, including social interaction. There are times when student behaviour will
move beyond what is recognised as acceptable behaviour. Where this occurs
students will be given the opportunity to correct their behaviour (where appropriate)
before moving onto sanctions.

Classroom responsibilities are set within classrooms through shared agreements

whereas schoolwide boundaries and consequences are set forth in our behaviour
policy. In both cases, our school’s Core Values at the core of our behaviour and
discipline actions.

The Senior Leadership Team will support its students and teachers in the
maintenance of proper behaviour and discipline. All members of the school
community should be aware of what is expected of them, and of the possible
consequences for breaches of school community policy and regulations. In
administering discipline, staff are to treat pupils with dignity and respect.

Some breaches of the discipline policy are severe to the point where they do not
follow any set escalation of steps and are at the Principal’s discretion and may
include expulsion. These include:
• Fighting
• Uttering of Threats
• Possession of weapons
• Slurs or aggression based on racial, religious, ethnic, or gender identity
• Alcohol, Drugs, Drug Paraphernalia, and Illegal Substances

MOBILE PHONES
The use of mobile phones by students is strictly prohibited within the school buildings
and its facilities: mobile phones are not allowed in school.
• Operation of mobile phones whether for communication, music or data
retrieval/transmission will result in confiscation of the unit.
• Emergency calls can be made/received on the reception phone lines.
• We remind students and parents that the school will not accept responsibility
for loss of, or damage to, any digital mobile devices.

MONEY, PERSONAL PROPERTY AND VALUABLES

Students should not bring expensive luxury items or large amounts of cash to school.
Students may ask the office to safely store valuables. However, the school will not be
responsible for lost or stolen valuables.

WEAPONS
Students are prohibited from bringing weapons of any kind, including realistic toy
weapons, into the school. Any instrument which can propel a projectile which might
cause physical injury, including sling shots, BB guns or any sort of guns, knives,
martial arts objects, or any such instrument or machine that could either cause harm

26
RICHMOND INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
‫مدرسة ريتشموند الدولية‬

or give the appearance of being capable of causing harm should not be carried in to
the school. If a student brings any weapons into school (including imitation weapons)
this may result in suspension, and in serious cases expulsion from the school.

Teachers will confiscate from students any items that fit the above description. The
item will be returned to the student’s parents after a meeting with the Principal is held
to ensure that there is a clear understanding of the regulation.

Revisions To Handbook
The provisions in the handbook are current and subject to change. Normally this will
only occur following directives from the relevant authorities in Qatar. The latest policies
are available from the school office. In the event that significate changes need to be
made to the handbook, this will be reissued.
