B. Video watching
After watching the link, answer the following processing questions with your groupmates:
a. What situation was presented in the video?
- The film tells the story of a deaf child, Libby, who is born into a hearing family that doesn’t
have knowledge about deaf culture or anything related to deafness. Libby is growing up in a
world of silence, leaving her with communication barriers and feeling isolated.

b. How did seeing the events unfold in the video make you feel?
- The film is based on the lives of many deaf children around the world today who do not have
proper access to language or education, a deaf child being born into a world of silence and it
makes me sad knowing that they can not express their thought because no one can
understand them as people does not have knowledge related to deafness.

c. Who are the different characters in the video? Choose one of the characters in the
video. How would you act when facing the same situation?

of being optimistic and being oblivious when it comes to considering what is best for
a deaf child.

d. What features of an advocacy campaign are evident in the video?

- This film aims to raise awareness for the need of British Sign Language in schools across the
UK and of course elsewhere in the world. Therefore, the film tends to be quiet when Libby
and Joanne are communicating because they are using sign language with slight lip reading.
This is to show the impact it has and how well it works for a deaf person.

e. What type of language was used in the short film? Did you notice if the sentences were
long or short? Were sentence fragments used? Was the language formal or informal or
was there a mixture of both?
- Sign language was used, and I did not notice if the sentence were long or short as I am one
of the person who do not understand the sign language. It is mixture of formal and informal
because Libby would not get the help she needs due to the majority of people around her
not understanding her.

f. Is the language used appropriate? Why do you say that?

- Yes, it is appropriate because there is one scene in particular that had the biggest impact on
me and that was the scene where we hear what Libby can hear and we see her world from
her point of view, which makes it an interactive scene where the audience can get a better
understanding for what it is like to be in that position. By doing this, we feel more attached
to Libby and we want her to get the help and support she needs, so we immediately become
more involved in the storyline.

g. What advocacy is undertaken by the short film? Did it accomplish its goal?
- A social worker, played by Rachel Shenton, begins to teach her sign language and Libby’s
world changes completely. Yes it reach the goal because it has made awareness of the
effects of sign language in schools and the impact of not having it in place, so it has gotten a
strong message across to millions of people.

C. Legacy of Dr. Pedro T. Orata and Social Issue

• Research the significant contributions of Dr. Pedro T. Orata in the field of higher education.
What was his legacy? As a group, decide which part this legacy you would like to feature in
your advocacy campaign.
- We would like to feature his Volunteerism in our advocacy campaign. Volunteerism is the
same spirit that drove Dr. Pedro. T. Orata to establish the community schools in the
Philippines, which includes the Urdaneta Community College (now Urdaneta City University)
in 1966 up to his death in 1989, without receiving a salary. Because of his genuine love for
his people, he opted not to receive his salary and give it to students who were struggling
financially in their studies. His hardship, empathy to others, and love for country were
among his inspirations that propelled him to volunteer for one greater cause. The idea of
“quality education for all” would be no meaning without Dr. Orata who put his vision into
action, who put his action into service of his countrymen. Dr. Orata’s legacy is a message to
the world that one great act of volunteerism can transform generations.
• Working with your group members, decide on an issue in our society that needs to be
addressed. This will be the focus of your advocacy campaign.
- We want to addressed the issue about lack of education in our society.
• Research on the issue that you have decided on. What specific aspects of the issue would
you like to work on?
- Poverty is believed to be the leading cause of lack of education.

D. The formats of an advocacy campaign

• EXAMPLE OF ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN FOR EDUCATION
https://youtu.be/J5SNaeqUQIk
• As a group, decide what format your group will use for your advocacy campaign.
We will use infographics format for our advocacy campaign.

• Research on how to produce advocacy campaigns using the format you have chosen. What
language is used given the format? What are the technical considerations? Is this format
appropriate for your group? What other features make it an effective advocacy campaign?
EXAMPLE OF INFOGRAPIC FOR EDUCATION
- We can produce by printing and distribute to everyone. English language was used, and it is
appropriate for our group also for the viewers because everyone can relate to this issue, the
caption in the infographics will make it a big impact and it will be an effective advocacy
campaign.

- We learned while making the advocacy campaign how important education is and how lucky
we are that we reach what we are now. Education is a thorough journey that transforms an
individual completely. It is the journey of struggles, achievements, success, accomplishment,
efforts, importance etc. It helps in the overall development of an individual as we can
acquire knowledge, skills, and many other things through education. A person’s attitude and
personality highly depend on his education. Education also makes a person mature and
effective in his decisions. Educated people know the importance of discipline and time
management and thus have greater opportunities to become successful people in life.
Education is a fundamental right of every individual thus everyone must acquire education
to understand every important aspect of life. When individuals work together openly,
processes and goals become more aligned, leading the group towards a higher success rate
of achieving a common goal and that is the reason why we made it this advocacy and by
using our critical thinking in making this it helps us better understand ourselves, our
motivations and goals in accomplishing our advocacy. We deduce information to find the
most important parts and apply those to our life, it can change our situation and promote
personal growth and overall happiness.

3. Peer assessment

• Rate your groupmates regarding their participation in this group task using the rubric on
peer assessment. Send your rating in the submission bin on peer assessment using iKonek,
