Supervision Model- Alternative Supervision

M. Mohsin Altaf Teacher Education
This approach normally uses when the teacher first begin to teach. In this model,
supervisor’s role is to target a variety of alternatives to what the teacher has done in the
classroom.
 This model limits the number of choices for teachers and it can reduce anxiety over not
knowing what to do next.
 It still keeps the responsibility for decision making with teacher.
 Alternative supervision works best when the supervisor does not favor any one
alternative and does not sound judgmental.
 Purpose of offering alternatives is to widen the scope of what a teacher will consider
doing.
 His goal (Fanselow) to substitute self-generated alternatives for prescribed alternatives.
 Suggesting alternatives (Fanselow also provides ways through which teachers can
generate their own alternatives in their teaching).
 This model also trains teachers to be aware of ‘leaden’ (as opposed to ‘golden’)
moments when things consistently do not go well.
 The resolution of this model for teachers to try alternative behaviors and to pay
attention to the consequences.
 Different strategies may implement in same consequences/situation.
 Supervisor should express the direction or suggestions in good manner.

I observed one of the Physics teachers’ class of grade 11 in Foundation public school.
Few pointers are noted to improve the quality of teaching and the behavior of students
in class.

Observation 1:

What I observed, the teaching approach followed in the class was teacher centered as
known as banking approach rather than student centered. Input and output was one
ended.

Feedback 1:

I provided the feedback to the teacher in order to make the session interactive, ask
questions of that topic, use resources, make worksheets, past papers, take output
individually on the same topic.

Observation 2:

Secondly I observed, when the teacher started to make the class interactive and asked
questions, some students stayed aloof and didn't participate at all. Also, there were
some students who joined the class late and missed most of the lecture. So, some of the
students attended the lecture but didn't participate in the Q/A session while some didn't
even attend the lecture properly.

Feedback 2:

The solution to this second observation is that, firstly those students who attended the
whole lecture but didn't answer the queries or gave no output or showed no response,
should be picked by the teacher and called to the board. The teacher needs to ask them
to solve any problem, or to explain any statement or any formula related to that topic,

or to just revisit any part of that topic in the class. Any related activity can also help
engage those students and grab their attention. Randomly choosing students to answer
questions can also help build up the confidence in students so they can get involved like
other students.
Secondly, for students who deliberately join the class late, to avoid attending lecture,
some resources like a game or a short video clip etc. can be included in the lecture to
build up their interest quickly. This will not only benefit specific students but the whole
class in general.

Observation 3:

Another thing that I noticed was, though teacher improved immensely and included
resources to their lecture but they were quite monotonous and mundane. For instance,
using multi-media or making slides on PowerPoint or prepare worksheets.

Feedback 3:

Based on this observation, the teacher was provided suggestion that how he make his
lesson continuously in a way to cater the attention of students all time. For example, to
use different techniques to take feedback from students like he can use padlet wall.
Further in order to make the concept map of the complete topic, he can use
creately.com (App). The purpose to acknowledge the teacher to become tech savvy to
always satisfy their students and to give their subject knowledge to the students in
improved way.
