Overview of the Assessment Activity (Provide a clear and concise description of your activity)
clmdncr/daranpacheco 11252020
Students are expected to do the experiment, answers the questions and complete the data in the table
provided.
Assessment Activity
Solubility of Common Liquid Solvents
Materials:
· Alcohol
· Softdrinks
· Cooking oil
· Instant coffee
· Sugar
· Sand/Soil/Pebbles
· Plastic drinking cups/drinking cup available at home
· Spoon
Procedure:
3. Measure out a tablespoon of table salt and add it to the cup of water and stir using a spoon.
4. Record the results of each test by writing the words “soluble” if the entire solute dissolves, “insoluble” if
the solute does not dissolve, or “partially soluble” if some of the solute dissolves.
5. In another clean cup, add a cup full of water, but this time, add a tablespoon of sand/soil/pebbles and stir.
Record the results in the table.
6. Repeat the same procedure for the coffee, and sugar. Each time, use a clean cup and spoon for stirring.
7. Follow the same procedure with the alcohol, soft drinks, and cooking oil in place of the water.
Note:
· If all the solute disappears, then the solute is said to have dissolved in the solvent and
a solution is produced.
· An insoluble solute will settle out of the mixture. Insoluble solutes are usually found at
the bottom of the cup or floating on the surface of the liquid.

Guide Questions:
1. What do you think will happen if we added more coffee powder to the same amount of water? Classify the
sample solution based on the saturation. (saturated or unsaturated) Explain your answer.
2. Considering the data that you have gathered in the table, assuming that the soluble represents rational
square roots while insoluble represents irrational, which of the following are rational and irrational?
3. While performing the experiment, what are the safety measures that you must observed in order to prevent
accidents?
Based on the experiment, answer the questions 4 and 5. Make sure to use Past form of the verb in your
sentence.
4. What did you do with the salt and water to discover if it will be dissolved?
5. What did you do to have a good amount of solute for your mixture of water and salt?
Ipaliwanag.
8. Make a poster by using the solution you made out of the experiment with the theme “Research”.
Give emphasis on the design in Arts and Crafts of Luzon. Make use of bond paper or other kind of
materials readily available in your home. Explain your work using past tense accordingly.
