3 PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS:

3.1 Review and become familiar with the entire procedure before beginning the Calibration Process.

WARNING

Unless otherwise designated, and prior to beginning the Calibration Process,

ensure that all test equipment voltage and/or current outputs are set to zero (0) or
turned off, where applicable. Ensure that all equipment switches are set to the
proper position before making connections or applying power. If not strictly
observed, could result in injury to, or death of, personnel or long term health
hazards.

3.2 The temperature of the calibration area must be 73 6 F.

3.3 Ensure the TI is clean and free from defects or damage capable of affecting use or calibration.

3
T.O. 33K6-4-1362-1

3.4 As applicable, connect test equipment to an appropriate power source. Set POWER switches to ON and allow
warm-up as required by the manufacturer.

3.5 Type A, B, C, D, DO, O and OO TIs are certified from 20 to 90 points only. P/N 80-130 and 80-135 TIs are
certified at 80, 100 and 135 points only. A Limited Certification label will be required, annotated with the applicable
limitation.

3.6 To minimize friction error, lightly tap the mechanical/analog TI with finger before reading.

3.7 Applied values listed in Table 2 were determined using the following equations derived from ASTM D2240:

Type A, B and O: Force, N = 0.550 + (0.075 * Hx)

Where: Force, N is force in Newtons

Hx is the TI hardness indication in points

Type C, D and DO: Force, N = 0.4445 * Hy

Where: Force, N is force in Newtons

Hy is the TI hardness indication in points

Type OO Force, N = 0.203 + 0.00908 * H

Where: Force, N is force in Newtons

H is the TI hardness indication in points

Type M Force, N = 0.324 + 0.0044 * HM

Where: Force, N is force in Newtons

HM is the TI hardness indication in points

3.8 Perform only those portions of the Calibration Process which pertain to the TI being calibrated.

4 CALIBRATION PROCESS:

NOTE

Unless otherwise specified, verify the results of each test and take corrective
action whenever the test requirement is not met, before proceeding.

4.1 INDENTOR CALIBRATION:

CAUTION

Use care not to damage the indentor when calibrating Type B and D TIs. If not
strictly observed, could result in damage to, or destruction of, equipment or loss
of mission effectiveness.

4.1.1 With the TI indicating zero, compare indentor to Gage Block stack, verify extension is between 0.096 and
0.100 inch, for P/N 307L verify extension is between 0.098 and 0.100 inch, for Type M TIs verify extension is
between 0.048 and 0.050 inch.

4.2 HARDNESS CALIBRATION:

4.2.1 Determine which type of TI is to be tested and set up the test equipment as shown in Figure 1. Ensure
appropriate Slide/Counter Weights and Contact Head are installed onto Durometer Calibrator Beam.

NOTE

For Types D, B TIs use Brass Contact Head. For Types A, C, DO TIs use
Aluminum Contact Head.

4.2.2 Set Slider Weight to appropriate Notch 0.

4.2.3 Level and zero Durometer Calibrator as necessary.

4.2.4 Ensure the TI is secured onto the Durometer Calibrator or Holder (external stand) as required and the TI
indentor is aligned to and near the Durometer Calibrator Contact Head. Zero the TI as necessary.

NOTE

Some TIs have a preload of 56 grams at a zero reading.

4.2.5 Position Durometer Calibrator Slide Weight to the first value listed in the TI Point column of Table 2.

4.2.6 Lower TI on the Contact Head until the Durometer Calibrator balance line lines up to zero. Lightly tap on the
black Pinion Knob to ensure TI is seated.

4.2.7 The TI must indicate within the values listed in the Point Limits column of Table 2. If using a Balance and
Weights instead of a Durometer Calibrator, verify that applied Weight indicates within values listed in the Load
Limits column of Table 2.

4.2.8 Repeat steps 4.2.5 through 4.2.7 for each remaining value listed in the TI Point column of Table 2.
