1.1 Rate 率
A rate is a comparison of two quantities of different kinds by division.

A rate can be seen as a relation of one quantity per unit of another quantity. For example, if Julie spends
$60 in a day, we say that she spends money at a rate of $60/day. ‘/’ is used to denote ‘per’ when we
write rate. 4

B. Continued Ratios
For example, if a : b = 2 : 3 and b : c = 4 : 5 , find a : b : c .

Method 1
Make the common term b in each ratio has the same value. Step 1: Find the LCM of 3 and 4.
12
The LCM of 3 and 4 is _____.
a : b = 2: 3 = __________
8:12 Step 2: 4 ,
Multiply a : b by _____
3. ,
Multiply b : c by _____
b : c = 4: 5 = __________
12:15 So we have same value of b in both ratios.

If two quantities x and y are in direct proportion, for any two pair of values of x and y,

Quantity x x1 x2
Quantity y y1 y2
x1 y2
We have x1 : x2 = y2 : y1 or =
x2 y1

The relation can also be written as __________________.

if two quantities x and y are in inverse proportion, their ________________ is always a constant.
