And during the summer there are events such as the Hot Rod Hootenanny in St. Catharines, Mods and Rockers in T.O., and the Wasaga Rockabilly Weekend. However, in the GTA, theres not much else going on that covers the music as well as films, a hot rod show, and dance lessons over a threeday stretch. The East End Rockabilly Weekend offers that bill once a year, expanding on our other shows during the year, which are single night events. We hope that were offering something unique to our audiences, although were part of a much larger music community. They definitely are, and once again, it all happens at The Dominion on Queen, which has become ground zero for rockabilly fans. Faris says it took about six months to assemble the weekend bash, and explained how he and Good conceptualized the event. Good, by the way, designs the way-cool posters for all the rockabilly shows and plays bass with Tennessee Voodoo Coupe. We comb through a wish list of bands and aim for something new and exciting each year, although we d o h av e s o m e re t u r n i n g favourites such as the Royal Crowns, Ronnie Hayward Trio and Tennessee Voodoo Coupe, he says. We were fortunate to make contact with Rosie Flores last year, and after our initial attempt to book her in 2010 fell through, she will be here to wow audiences. Guys, its time to slick back your pompadours and iron those bowling shirts. And ladies, get set to rock your Bettie Bangs and pencil skirts. The third edition of the East End Rockabilly Weekend kicks off Friday night and promises to be the most memorable. The EERW is the biggest event of its kind in the Toronto area, and the only annual weekend music festival focusing on rockabilly music and culture. Headliners include Texasbased Rockabilly Filly Rosie Flores and BCs Cousin Harley, film screenings, dance classes and a honky-tonk brunch on Sunday. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Flores was once called a spinning wheel of American roots music by the New York Times for her ability to deftly mix rockabilly, blues, honky-tonk and country. A virtuoso on the guitar, shes often credited as one of the creators of the altcountry genre. There are a lot of great single-night shows throughout the year in this vein, and bigger-name touring acts like Robert Gordon and Imelda May make their way here on occasion, says David Faris, who organizes the annual blowout with Steve Good.

Rest assured, Faris and Good arent content to coast when it comes to maintaining the momentum that began with the first East End Rockabilly Weekend. Each year is a challenge, there are always way more bands that wed like to book, Faris says. But, theres always the next show. NOTE: East End Rockabilly Weekend 3 kicks off Friday night with performances by Cousin Harley, The Royal Crowns, Alistair Christl & The Lonely, and DJ Rockin Dave Faris. There also will be a screening of Hot Rod Gang starring Gene Vincent at 8 p.m. $20. The Ronnie Hayward Trio plays the Dominion Saturday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. And Rosie Flores, Tennessee Voodoo Coupe, The Kingmakers, and DJ Beachparty Mark roll in on Saturday night. A showing of the documentary, Two-Headed Cow, kicks off the night. 8 p.m. $20. Things wrap up Sunday with Hank Williams On The Lost Highway playing the Hank Williams Birthday Brunch. 1 p.m. $7.
