● Answer any five full questions.

1. a) Define FEM and discuss the steps of FEA for a structural problem with a CO1 (10)
suitable example.
b) Derive an expression for displacement of a bar subjected to a compressive CO1 (10)
load using RR method. Use three terms in the displacement function.

2. a) Discuss the plane stress and plane strain with example. CO1 (05)
b) Derive the expression for deflection of cantilever beam at its free end CO1 (10)
carrying a point load at the free end using Galerkin’s method.
c) State principle of minimum potential energy. Write the potential energy CO1 (05)
functional for a 3D body subjected to body force, traction force and point
loads.

3. a) Derive shape functions for a 2-node bar element. CO2 (08)


b) For the stepped bar as shown, determine, nodal displacements, element CO2 (12)
stresses and reaction force. Given A1=75mm2, A2=50mm2, E1=70GPa,
E2=210GPa, P1=30kN, P2=20kN, L1=800mm, L2=600mm.

4. Determine the element stress for the truss as shown in the figure. Take CO2 (20)
A1=A2=A3=250mm2, E1=E2=E3=210GPa, L1=600mm, L2=600mm,
P1=55kN, P2=45kN.

5. a) For a four noded quadrilateral element, derive the strain matrix. CO3 (12)

6. a) Explain iso-parametric formulation, super-parametric formulation and CO3 (06)


sub-parametric formulation.
b) Discuss geometric isotropy and convergence criteria with suitable CO3 (06)
example.
c) Evaluate using two point and three point Gauss quadrature. CO3 (08)

7. a) Derive shape functions for a 2 noded beam element in natural coordinates CO4 (10)
and sketch them.
b) Derive stiffness matrix for the beam element. CO4 (10)

8. For a beam loaded as shown in fig (8),determine CO4 (20)


i) Slope at nodes 2 and 3
ii) Vertical deflection at midpoint of distributed load.
