READING
A Read the text. Choose the correct answers (a, b, or c).

How to survive

In recent years, many people have become interested in learning about survival techniques. In other
words, they want to know how they can survive in the wilderness after an accident, or in a natural
disaster like an earthquake.

In the UK, the most famous survival expert is Bear Grylls. He learned how to survive in almost any
situation you can possibly think of as part of his training for the Special Air Service (SAS) in the British
Army. His TV programs showing people what they can do to find food and water in the wild are very
popular and are watched by millions of people. Most people will never have to catch a rabbit in a forest
or drink water collected from leaves, but they seem to enjoy the idea that they would survive thanks to
the methods Bear Grylls demonstrates. It’s easy to be brave sitting in an armchair at home!

But you don’t have to be a member of the SAS to be able to survive in extreme conditions because the
same rules apply whatever the circumstances. The most important things are finding water, making a
shelter, staying warm, and finding food. Water is the most important as, without it, no one can survive
for very long. If you can find water and avoid dying of cold or overheating in extreme temperatures, you
probably have a good chance of getting home alive. In many real-life cases of survival, though, it seems
to be luck that plays the most important role and not survival techniques.

a people usually have lots of accidents.
b earthquakes are common.
c they can teach people something useful.

2 Bear Grylls is famous because …

a the army trained him very well.

c he was in the SAS.

3 The writer believes that ordinary people …

a need to know how to catch their own food.
b enjoy feeling danger without being in it.
c can become braver by following survival training.

4 What does the word “it,” in bold in paragraph 3, refer to?

a water
b food
c shelter

5 According to the writer, what usually helps disaster survivors the most?
a knowing survival techniques
b being lucky
c building a shelter
