In this module, you will know and understand the two
distinct forms of art in the Philippines: the traditional and non-
traditional arts. These are art forms produced by artists in
their pursuit of expressing their ideas, feelings, thoughts, and
emotions as well as their aspirations and appreciation of art.

Traditional and Non-Traditional arts are parts of the


lessons to be discussed. Fine arts/ Aesthetics as well as
Utilitarian/ Practical Arts are explained including its samples
of art forms. Different tasks about the lessons are presented
for you to develop your skills, deepen your understanding of these traditional and
non-traditional art forms and its significance to us.
As a Senior High School student, part of your task is to read and study the
topics, and accomplish every task. This module will help you improved your skills,
knowledge and appreciation of Philippine art forms.

At the end of the module, you should be able to:

1) Discuss the differences and significance between traditional


and non-traditional art forms in the Philippines.
2) Identify the different traditional and non-traditional art forms in
the Philippines; and
3) Execute a sample artwork based from traditional and non-
traditional art forms and relates its significance in
promoting/developing culture and arts.

Now that you already know our targets for this module, are

Before we proceed with the lessons, let’s understand the meaning of the following
terms/ words.

A. AESTHETICS-is a set of principles concerned with the nature and


appreciation of beauty, especially in art. It is also the branch of philosophy
that deals with the principles of beauty and taste. The word is
derived from the Ancient Greek” aisthetikos’’meaning “esthetic”,
sensitive, sentient, pertaining to sense of perception which in turn
was derived from aisthanomai, meaning -I perceive, feel, sense.”.

B. NON-TRADITIONAL ARTS- is judged rarely; new styles of art typically


seen as non-traditional and out of place during their early exposure to the
world. After years of being appreciated by the general public, the new art
forms become the “norm” and sees as traditional.

C.TRADITIONAL ARTS- the arts produced at the present period


that reflects the current culture by utilizing classical techniques in drawing,
painting, and sculpturing. Artists are mainly concerned with
the preservation of time-honored skills in creating works of forms of
figurative forms of fine art as a means to express human emotions and
experiences.

TASK NO. 3 “. LET’S READ AND ANALYZE. ”


LESSON 1: “ART FORMS IN THE PHILIPPINES”

Art form refers to the elements of art that are independent


of its interpretation or significance. It covers the methods
adopted by the artist and the physical composition of the
artwork, primarily non-semantic aspects of the work, such as
color, contour, dimension, melody, space, texture and value.
Art forms in the Philippines include Fine o Aesthetic (Major
Arts) and Utilitarian or Practical (Minor Arts).

Fine or Aesthetic Arts are primarily for aesthetic enjoyment through the senses
especially visual and auditory. It is the changing of certain materials or media for
aesthetic pleasure. Practical or Utilitarian Arts are intended or practical use or utility. It
is the changing of raw materials for utilitarian purposes. However, they must possess
ornaments or artistic qualities to make them useful and beautiful.

Philippine art reflects to its society and non- Philippines the wide-range of
cultural influences on the country’s culture. The art in the Philippines can be divided
into two distinct branches such as traditional and non-traditional.

1) Traditional Arts – bearers of traditional arts can be nominated as

A. Folk Architecture- including but not limited to stilt houses, land houses, and
aerial houses.
B. Maritime Transport- boat houses, boat-making, and maritime traditions
C. Weaving- including but limited to basket weaving, back –strap loom weaving
headgear weaving, fishnet weaving, and other forms of weaving.
D. Carving- including but not limited to, wood carving and folk non-clay sculpture.

E. Folk performing arts- including but not limited to, dances, plays and dramas.
F. Folk (Oral) Literature- including but not limited to, epics, song, and myths.
G. Folk graphic and plastic arts- including, but not limited to calligraphy, tattooing,
folk writing, folk drawing, and folk painting.
H. Ornament, textile, or fiber art- hat-making, mask-making, accessory-making;
Ornamental metal crafts.
I. Pottery- included but not limited to ceramic- making, clay or pot-making; folk
clay-sculpture.
J. Other artistic expressions of traditional culture- including but not limited to non-
ornamental metal crafts, martial arts, and constellation traditions
K. 2) Non-Traditional Arts- bearers of non- traditional arts can be nominated as
National Artist, equal to Gawad ng Manlilikha ng Bayan.

A. Dance- including dance choreography, dance direction, and dance

B. Music- including musical composition, musical direction, and musical

E. Literature- poetry, fiction, essay, and literary/ art criticism.
F. Film and Broadcast arts- including film and broadcast direction, film and
broadcast writing; film and broadcast production design; film and
broadcast new media, film and broadcast cinematography; film and
broadcast editing, film and broadcast animation, film and broadcast
performance; film and broadcast media
G. Architecture and allied arts-including non-folk-and architecture, and urban
design’.
H. Design- including but not limited to industrial design and fashion design.

OTHER ART FORMS:


A. Art- sometimes used to refer to the utility of indigenous as a
medium for the creation in different kinds of artwork. Indigenous artists
uses materials which include extracts from onion, tomato, tuba (palm
wine); coffee, rust, molasses and other materials available to be used as
paint.
B. Jewelry Design- The regalia, jewelry, ceremonial weapons, and
ritualistic and funerary objects attest to the recently uncovered evidence
of prosperity and achievement of Phil. Politics that flourished between
the 10th and 13th Centuries.
C. Kutkut - is a painting technique combining ancient Oriental and
European process. Kut-kut is an exotic Philippine art form based on
early techniques sgraffito, encaustic and layering. The merging of these
ancient styles produce a unique artwork characterized by delicate
swirling interwoven lines, multi-layered texture and an illusion of three-
dimensional space. 8
D. Tanaga- is a type of Filipino poetry.
E. The Batek or Batok- is form of indigenous tattooing of the Kalinga people
In the Cordillera. The most prominent tattoo artist in the country is
Whang-od, who has been known as the last mambabatok until has
started mentoring her niece on the art so that the tattoo artistry of the
Kalinga will continue. The art has been critically acclaimed
internationally in the U.S., Germany, France, Canada and many other
countries.

LESSON: 2: “FINE OR AESTHETIC AND UTILIZATION
OR PRACTICAL ARTS”

1. FINE OR AESTHETICS (MAJOR ARTS)


Are primarily for aesthetic enjoyment through the senses especially
visual and auditory. It is the changing certain material or media for aesthetic
pleasure.
2. PRACTICAL OR UTILITARIAN (MINOR ARTS)
Are intended for practical use or utility. It is the changing of raw
materials for utilization purposes. However, they must possess ornament
or artistic qualities to make them useful and beautiful.
A. INDUSTRIAL ART
It is the changing of raw materials into same significant product for
human consumption or use.
Ex: Shell-craft, shoe making, pottery making, sheet-metal work and
manufacture or automobiles, home appliances and television sets.
B. APPLIED OR HOUSEHOLD ART
Refer mostly household arts such as frame arrangement, interior
decoration, dress making, home-making, embroidery, cooking and
others.
C. CIVIC ART
This includes city or town planning, maintenance and beautification
of parks, plaza, roads, bridges and farms. It refers to civic planning and
beautification in order to improve the standard of living.
D. COMMERCIAL ART
This involves business propaganda in form of advertisement in
newspapers arts, magazines, sign painting, billboard, announcement
leaflet, displays, poster designing, movie, illustration and many more.

E. GRAPHIC ART
It is anything printed from raised or sunken reliefs and lane
surfaces.
F. AGRICULTURAL ART
Refers to agronomy (crop production), horticulture, (garden or
orchard cultivation), husbandry (raising cows, carabaos, poultry and
swine, and farming.
G. BUSINESS ART-
This includes merchandising, accounting bookkeeping,
typewriting, stenography, salesmanship and business administration.
H. FISHING ART
It includes shallow and keep fishing, fish refrigeration and culture,
net weaving.
I. MEDICAL OR CLINICAL ART
It includes first aid treatments, medical manufacturing, surgery,
medical operations, rehabilitation and others
J. PHILIPPINE ART HISTORY
1. PRE-COLONIAL ART (ETHNIC ARTS)
In Pre-colonial Philippines arts are for ritual purposes for
everyday use.
2. ISLAMIC ART
Is characterized by geometric designs, and patterns eliciting
focus from the believers.
