The great ocean conveyor moves water around the globe. This motion is caused by a combination of thermohaline currents (thermo = temperature; haline = salinity) in the deep ocean and wind-driven currents on the surface. This motion can control global climate.
2. Describe how a regional gyre system works (pick one example)
Ocean gyres are large system of circular ocean currents formed by global wind patterns and forces created by Earth’s rotation. Gyre caused by Coriolis Force and Transport Ekman. Planetary vorticity along with horizontal and vertical friction, determine the circulation patterns from the wind stress curl. The example of gyre system is in South Pasific. The center of the South Pacific Gyre is the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, the site on Earth farthest from any continents and productive ocean regions and is regarded as Earth’s largest oceanic desert.
3. Describe the general pattern of the Indonesian Through Flow!
Fresh water to move from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. Higher ocean surface topography in the western Pacific than in the Indian Ocean drives upper thermocline water from the North Pacific through the western route of the Makassar Strait to either directly exit through the Lombok Strait or flow eastward into the Banda Sea. Weaker flow of saltier and denser South Pacific water passes over the Lifamatola Passage into the Banda Sea. From the Banda Sea the ITF exits Timor, Ombai, and Lombok passages.
4. Describe how monsoon system influences current pattern in Indonesian water!
Monsoon system is a major wind system that seasonally reverse it direction. Current can be caused by wind. Because monsoon was wind system based on season that pass through Indonesia, it can be influenced current pattern in Indonesia.
