WRITING SAMPLE # 1

Geography as pictured in atlases is often colorful and beautiful. While atlases

are just representation, however, geography is a reality that deeply impacts
regions and civilizations in many ways. Three of the world’s most influential
geographic creatures are the Himalayan.

The Himalayan Mountains have had a major effect on the development o f

India. These mountains are one of the earth’s great mountain rages and include
Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. Because the Himalayan
Mountain are so difficult to cross, they have protected ancient India from
foreign invaders in the north. They form a geographic and political boundary
along the northern border of the Indian Sub-continent. The height of the
Himalayas also provides a barrier to cold winds from the north. As a result,
much of India is warm year-round. Indian culture has adapted to these high
temperatures with light, loose clothing.

Similarly, the Sahara desert has had a great impact on North Africa. The Sahara
is the world’s largest desert and stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the
Ethiopian highlands. Because of its hot climate, local cultures have also
adapted light, loose clothing, like the Himalayas, the Sahara desert is very
difficult to cross and has formed a barrier between the cultures of Northern
Africa and rest f the continent, thus there are great differences in language and
religion between the countries north and south of the Sahara, in addition, the
lack of water in the desert has limited the amount f arable land in the area. This
feature affects countries like Ethiopia, which has difficulty in producing
enough food t feed its people.

Lastly, the Yangtze River in China has also tremendously influenced the region
and its people. It is China’s longest river and flows eastward from the
mountains of Tibet to the South China Sea. Because much of China is
mountainous, people settled around the Yangtze to take advantage of the water
and the rich soil. The Yangtze, moreover, provides fishes for food. Since it
transportation as well as communication.

The Himalayan Mountains, Sahara desert and Yangtze River are among the
earth’s most important geographic features. They have each had a major
influence on the development of the regions in which they are located. The
nations and civilizations that developed around these features have adapted to
their geography.
