What is plurilingualism and how can it be developed in the YL classroom?

Plurilingualism refers to the ability to communicate and use different languages, even if it is
through speaking or writing, reading, or listening. It is an important skill to have in today's
world, where people from different places – and cultural backgrounds - interact with each
other.
In a young learner's classroom, plurilingualism can be developed through various ways,
including:
Teachers can expose their students to different languages by doing activities and using
materials in the target language(s). For example, they can use songs, stories, and games in
different languages to familiarize the students with the sounds and structure of the language.
Multilingualism environment: Teachers can create a supportive environment that
encourages the use of different languages. For example, they can exhibit posters in different
languages, and allow students to speak in their native languages during group discussions,
and provide opportunities for student-student language exchanges.
Inclusive language teaching practices: Teachers can use inclusive language teaching
practices that take into account the linguistic and cultural diversity of their students. They can
use translation and interpretation strategies, avoid negative stereotypes about the target
languages, and provide support for students who need it.
Language games: Games such as hangman, crossword puzzle, word search and memory
game can help students practise reading and writing in different languages.
Creative writing activities: Creative writing activities such as diaries, nursery rhyme and
poetry can help students develop writing skills in different languages.
Overall, plurilingualism development in young learners classroom is a process that
requires intentional planning, implementation, and evaluation of language teaching practices.
It requires an understanding of the diverse linguistic, values, ideals and cultural backgrounds
of the students and a commitment to creating a multilingual and inclusive learning
environment.
