COMPETENCIES (MELCs)
III. CONTENT/CORE CONTENT The simple songs in major and minor chord
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
I. Introduction (Time Frame: 5 minutes)
You have learned that a chord is composed of three or more tones or notes that are played together. A
chord can either be major or minor. Major chords produce a happy feeling while minor chords give a feeling of
sadness.
For today’s lesson, you are expected to use a major chord or minor chord as an accompaniment to simple
songs.
Are you excited to sing? Before you do that, you need to have a deeper understanding of chords.
The basic chord that produces harmony is a triad. A triad is made up of three notes - a root, its third, and its fifth.
Look and study the illustration below.

Ligaya Bautista Garcia-Quinitio, et. Al. The 21st Century MAPEH in Action. (Manila: Rex Book Store.2016.)69.

The root is found at the bottom of the chord. The second note is called the third because it sits exactly on
the third interval from the first note while the last note is called the fifth because it sits exactly on the fifth interval
from the root note.
Primary chords are basically “family chords.” These three are the most commonly used chords in music. Lots
of songs and many pieces of music that you will hear will be built around them because they work well together.
In the key of C, the primary chords are C major, F major, and G major.
The technique used in searching the primary chord of any key signature is the mathematical procedure of
selecting the 1st, 4th, and 5thnotes of the scale of C major.
The illustration below is an example of the Key of C major where the primary chords are C major (1st), F major
(4 ), and G major (5th).

In the piano keys, the keys of C major are C-E-G.
Note: You may try playing the chord if you have a piano app on your mobile phone or piano at home.

IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
The primary chords are also referred to as Tonic, Sub-dominant, and Dominant.

➢ Tonic chord is the root note of the chord. In the key of C, do(C) is the tonic that has the Roman
numeral I.
➢ Sub-dominant is the fourth note from the tonic and has the Roman numeral IV. In the key of C, fa
(F) is the sub-dominant.
➢ Dominant is the fifth note from the tonic and has the Roman numeral V. In the key of C, sol (G) is
the dominant chord.

Process Questions:
1. What do you call the basic chord that produces harmony?
2. How many notes are there in a triad? Name these notes.
What are the different primary chords and how do they differ from one another?

D. Development (Time Frame: 10 minutes)

of the following song. Perform these songs in front of your family members. Record this task.
