II.INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Grammar as defined is the sound, structure, and meaning system of language.
As a system of rules, it defines the grammatical structure of a language. A student
like you must learn these rules for you to arrive at meaningful oral and written
statement.
The building blocks of grammar are the eight parts of speech which are verbs,
nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.
As a basic rule for subject and verb agreement, a singular subject takes a singular
verb while plural subject takes a plural verb.
REMEMBER THIS!
To write a meaningful definition, you should follow the two sentence patterns:
1.Pattern 1: Term = Class + Distinguishing Characteristics
2.Pattern 2: Class+ Distinguishing Characteristics = Term
Examples:
Pattern 1: Bronze is a metal that is made by combining copper and thin.
Term + Class + Distinguishing Characteristics
Pattern 2: A metal that is made by combining copper and thin is bronze
Class + Distinguishing Characteristics + Term

TIPS!
For you to construct grammatically correct definitions, you must use relative
pronouns as well as participial and prepositional phrases in giving the
distinguishing characteristics of the term defined.

 Here are the relative pronouns which you can use: (that, which, who, whom,
whose).
Example: A printer is a machine that is used for printing documents.
You may also use other words to introduce a distinguishing characteristic in a
definition such as: (when, where, wherein, whereby, by which)
You can also use participial phrase in stating the distinguishing characteristics
of the term defined.
Example: Bronze is a metal produced by combining copper and thin.
Here are the types of phrases which you can use:
1. Present Participial Phrase (beginning with +ing form of the verb)

Example: Flu is a common disease brought by virus causing fever,

weakness, body aches and breathing problems.

2. Past Participial Phrase (beginning with +ed/d/en form of the verb)
Example: Biology is the branch of science concerned with living organisms.

3. Prepositional Phrase (beginning with a preposition such as for, to, etc.)
Example: Vaccine is a substance injected for protection against a particular

TAKE NOTE: Definitions can be shortened by changing the relative clause

into a participial phrase.
Example: Pragmatics is the branch of linguistics that deals with the relationship of
sentences to the environment in which they occur.
Shortened: Pragmatics is the branch of linguistics dealing with the relationship of
sentences to the environment in which they occur.

Practice Task 1: Can you Spot the Error?
Directions: Read and analyze the following definitions. Spot the error by encircling
the erroneous word. Write your revision on the space provided.
1. A cardiologist is a medical doctor that specializes in the treatment of heart
disease.

Practice Task 2: Define Me This Way!

Directions:
A. Making Full Definition. Combine the two sentences. Change the second
sentence into a clause that begins with which, who or that to come up with
a full definition of the term.
Example: a. Zoology is a branch of biology.
b. Zoology deals with animals and animal behavior.
Full Definition: Zoology is a branch of biology that deals with animals and animal
behavior.

b. Oven is used for baking or roasting food.

B. The Shorten Definition. Shorten the full definitions by removing the

relative
pronoun and changing the verb into its -ing, -ed, or en form.
Example: Zoology is a branch of biology that deals with animals and animal
behavior.
Shorten Definition: Zoology is a branch of biology dealing with animals and animal
behavior.

4. A perfume is a liquid substance that emits a pleasant odor.

Practice Task 3: Picture Perfect!

Situation: Joven, a Grade 10 Bicolano student was tasked to define the
different sources of information helpful in his research study. His teacher gave him
pictures so he can accurately describe them.
Your Task: Let us help him make meaningful definitions so he can start
researching. Observe correct grammar in making your definitions by using relative
