Lesson Plan in Science Grade 7

Content Standard: The learners demonstrate understanding of the properties of substances

that distinguish them from mixtures.
Performance Standard: Investigate the properties of mixtures of varying concentrations
using available materials in the community for specific purposes.
Learning Competency: Distinguish mixtures from substances based on a set of properties.
S7MT-Ie-f-4
Quarter: 1st Week: 5 Day: 1-2

I. Objectives:
At the end of 60 minutes, 80% of the learners are expected to:
1. describe mixtures based on the number of components present, uniformity and composition.

II. Content:
Subject Matter: Properties of Mixtures
Integration:
English/Literacy – the student will compare and contrast the observable properties of
the different samples of mixtures.
- reading the word correctly/spelling.
Math/Numeracy - counting the syllables of the words.
ICT – use of Kotobee App for their quiz

Strategies:
Inquiry Approach, Activity Method, Constructivist Approach, Discovery Learning

Materials:
 Stirring rod Vinegar Bond paper
 Beaker Powdered juice Softdrink
 Marble Salt Activity Sheet
 Water Ballpen Visual Aids

Unlocking Vocabularies: (NUT IN A SHELL)

 heterogeneous mixture- a mixture that is made up of more than one phase.
 homogeneous mixture- a mixture that contains only one phase.
 mixture- a physical combination of two or more substances.
 solute- the component that is dissolved in a solution or the substance in a smallest
amount
 solution: A homogenous mixture formed by the dissolution of a liquid, solid or gas in
a liquid.
 solvent- the dissolving component of a solution or the substance in a largest amount.
III. Learning Tasks:

4 Pics One Word
1. What common word describes the 4 pictures?
(Ans: Mixture/s)
2. Based from the given 4 pictures, give one word that is
associated with mixture.

Minutes
The teacher will divide the class into 4 groups. The first 2 Activity Sheet
groups will perform the activity on homogenous mixtures and ballpen

EXPLAIN (Teach the concept. Should include interaction
between teacher and students). 15 Minutes
The teacher will call 2 representatives from assigned group. Student’s output
Let the representatives explain the result of the activity.

Key Concept:
 Heterogeneous mixture is made up of 2 or more
substances that retained their properties after they
combined. There is no chemical combination that takes
place in the system. Two or more phases are still
noticeable.
 In homogeneous mixtures, the other substances disappear
in the other substance. Example: salt in water, coffee in
water, vinegar in water
ELABORATE (Students apply the information learned in the
Explain. The teacher will give inputs to deepen the
understanding of the students) 12 minutes
The teacher will prepare two containers that contain water. Water
The teacher will put a vinegar into the first container and salt Beaker
Stirring rod
for the second container, then mix it. The teacher will also
Powdered juice
present a softdrink and will shake the softdrink. Salt
Softdrink
The teacher will ask the following questions.

1. What have you observed on the first container(powdered

juice+ water) ?
2. Can you still see the granules separately from the water?
3. What is the solulte? Solvent?
4. What have you observed on the second water container
(Salt+Water) ?
5. Can you still see the salt separately from the water?
6. What is the solute? Solvent?
7. What can you observe when you shake a carbonated
drink?
8. What is the solulte? Solvent?

Key concept:

Solutions is a mixture of two more substances in a single

phase. The substance in a largest amount is solvent and in a
smallest amount is solute. Homogenous are classified into
three types : liquid-liquid solution (Vinegar+water), solid-
liquid solution (Salt+water) and gas-liguid solution
(CO2+water).
