1. How do these screen objects afford?

The first picture affords by clicking it and the video being played will be

rewinded or go back to an earlier certain second, they are typically seen on a music or

video player. And the last picture affords by clicking the up and arrow button to scroll the

page up by a certain amount, the down arrow button to scroll the page down by a certain

amount, and clicking and dragging the elevator button to move the page up or down

depending how it is being dragged, they are mostly seen on the right side of the web

pages or software.

Both were a good design as they are simple and very intuitive, unlike the 2nd

image, maybe due to its older interface design, it is hard to pinpoint what the screen

object affords. Based on the visuals, it may be an open document icon or a save document

icon. Meanwhile, the 3rd picture is also difficult to know as the yellow square interface

design also has different meanings, such as a warning color or a pause status icon in a

recording based on the researched image. I personally think that both were a poor design

as it is hard to know what it is pertaining to or used for.

2. What if you were a novice user?

If I were a novice user, I would probably struggle first on how the buttons and

icons are used as the images in the buttons are hardly difficult to understand and I would

check the manual for instructions and guidelines as I am not very knowledgeable about

the interface and the navigations. But with visual designs, I might probably know it

intuitively like the up, down, and elevator button suggests that I can click it to move the

page or I can experiment on it on how it would be of use by hovering it to check the label

and see what it is used for, but some of it will be tougher if it doesn't have any label when

you hover it.

3. Would you know what to do with them?

Icons bear a physical resemblance to what’s being represented. I would have

known it intuitively as any other softwares and websites uses the same symbols and icon

visuals in the buttons. Sometimes there is also a label that indicates the use of them if I

hover it.

4. How does a phone call differ when using;

A public phone box? A cell phone?

In the early 2000s, especially in the Philippines, a public phone box didn't have

any divider with doors. With that, your conversation will be heard by nearby people and

you can’t move it since it is fixated on the ground/post and connected through electrical

wires. Unlike using a phone, it is a portable handheld device that you can go to a different

room, quieter place, or use an earphone when talking.

Another thing, you will have to find a nearby phone booth to make a call and you

will be the only sender of the call while the others will not be able to reach out for you.

Unlike in a cell phone, you can call anytime and whenever you are and the other person

will be able to reach you anytime as long as you have a signal.

Additionally, a public phone box is not that convenient but in case of an

emergency they can be of great help, though it can only be used to make calls. Cell

phones, on the other hand, are the most important and convenient means of

communication in our daily lives. More than communication they are also mostly

designed for multi-tasking and entertainment purposes. They can be used by anyone

from anywhere. It is the most convenient way of communication.

5. How have these devices been designed to take into account

The kind of users?

Both are designed in the same manner because the call can be made by any kind

of user, however, with the public phone, non-tech savvy users can easily use this to make

a phone call by just inserting a coin and pressing the number of the person they want to

call and when they are done, they can put the handset back. Unlike a cell phone which

have more complicated buttons for the non-tech savvy users, it would be challenging for

them as they would firstly; go to a nearby store to buy a load, then register the load, open

the phone call app which would be foreign to them and when they are done, they would

have to press end button to end the call.

Type of activity being supported?

In public phones, it is only limited to a time-limited, usually takes a minute, voice

phone call per coin. Unlike in a cell phone, they can send images, recorded voice, or

videos, and messages with the use of mobile data and load by the telecom providers.

Public phones are also designed to be used by the general public. There is also the

option of allowing the caller to make a follow-on call by pressing a button rather than

collecting the money and reinserting it. Cell phones have a more complex mode of

interaction. More functionality is provided, including contact book, saved messages,

schedules, customized settings, voice mail, and security settings.

Context of use?

Public phones are usually set up in a fixed location, can be easily seen, and be

used in public places such as near a busy road, airports, and train stations especially for

emergency situations, wherein, your cell phone doesn’t have a signal maybe due to

weather conditions. Unlike cell phones, it is a basic cell phone but with advanced features

that expand its use. It is handheld, can be stored in your pockets, and it is handy for

personal use such as entertainment and work use that other businesspeople need a way to

reach out for you.

6. There are more desirable than undesirable aspects of the user experience listed in this

Table below. Why do you think this is so? Should you consider all of these when

designing a product?

Designers and developers mostly aim to produce desirable user experiences that

provide a favorable user experience. I personally believe that we must consider all these

aspects in order to create an effective user experience as usability, functionality and

user’s reactions to it. Being able to enjoy and have a satisfying experience are among the

ideal qualities since they inspire customers to keep using the product and urge them to

spend more, especially in the game section. On the other hand, undesirable aspects may

dissatisfy the user’s especially if it is long-term and may lead to possible drawbacks so

they must have to balance and moderate the user’s satisfaction, else, the user may feel

discontent and discontinue the use of the product.

DOCUMENTATION

On May 11, 2023. The group divided the parts based on their understanding and

knowledge of each question.

On May 15, 2023 - 7:25 P.M. The group started an online meeting, wherein the first 15

minutes, they discussed the answers they had provided on their group chat. With the most

understanding, they picked the answers that best answered the question. The group allotted the

next 15 minutes on revising and rewriting the answers and added some more in-depth

information based on all of their answers. The group assigned the next 20 minutes to discuss the

number 6 question but only 1 member participated in the discussion. Lastly, the group allotted

the last 10 minutes of the meeting to doing their own personal reflective journal. With that, our

meeting ended at 8:30 P.M.

CONTRIBUTION OF EACH MEMBERS

During the group’s free time, the group researched the following questions above and

learned the basic information about virtual affordance, how it is used on the web, and the

importance of having visuals in the user interface. Additionally, they research the icons,

symbols, and topics about the cellphone and public phone.

Irah Nicole Jimenez covered, discussed, and gave some insights and answers on

comparison of public phone and a cellphone based on their availability, their context of use, and

other insights about the topic.

Ramon Rivera answered some of the answers on how a novice user will know how

virtual affordance does, gave insights about the use of public phone and a cellphone and insights

about the activity being supported on the two phones.

Mark Christian Kent Feria discussed what virtual affordance does, gave insights and

compared the use between the public phone and a cellphone, the usage of the compared objects,

and the consideration of using both desirable and undesirable aspects in designing a product.

In general, all members participate in conducting the assessment and provide their

understanding and knowledge on each of the questions.

1 I learned about how time piece work and realize that we have so many different type of

watch or clocks that have so many types like digital, automatic or have waterproof.

2 In real life situation, time is so essential that we always find everyday we always see, and

it helps us in every way. Wristwatch or clocks that’s help us on how this works.

3 I give it for 3 ratings, cause I did find so many different benefits of wrist watch and clock

and how it work and why that we neeed those things. And also that we should cherish

ebery moment, everytime we spent working hard to have a good life.
