TANK BOAT 25 - 30/40 - 105 WEAPON STATION

11 JANUARY 2023

Patrol boat for river & coastal missions – Belgium

Description

The Tank Boat is a new patrol boat jointly developed and designed by the Belgian company John
Cockerill Defense in collaboration with the Indonesian Defense Industry PT Pintad and PT Lundin. The
new patrol boat is based on a catamaran design that provides a stable weapons platform for close-in and
long-range fire support in normally inaccessible coastal and riverine environments. She integrated the
John Cockerill Lundin first announced the tank boat concept in 2014. The tank boat was first unveiled in
Indo Defence 2016 in the form of a full-size mockup. The mockup was equipped with Cockerill 3105
turret. In 2018, the Ministry of Defense ordered one X18 tank boat to add to the TNI AD facilities as well
as evaluate the boat's performance. The first prototype had begun sea trials on April 28, 2021. Then on
May 22, 2021, she ordered by the Ministry of Defense underwent a sea trial from the dock in Banyuwangi
to the waters of Paiton, Probolinggo. After arriving at the Indonesian Navy's firing range in Paiton, the tank
boat underwent a firing test using its main weapon, the 30 mm cannon. Apart from Indonesia, then Tank
Boat has garnered some interest from India, Greece, the Philippines, and the United Arab Emirates.
Model variants:
The X-18 Tank Boat can be fitted with 25/30 mm, 30/40 mm, or 105 mm cannons from John Cockerill
Defense.

Design

The X18 uses a two-hull design with a composite material that is claimed to be ten times stronger than
steel, but ten times lighter than the same material. X 18 ATC is manufactured using the best available
technology — Full Carbon Fibre, Vacuum Infused Composites Utilizing Vinylester Resin with Sand-wich
Corecell and Multiaxial Carbon Fibre. The main cabin, wheelhouse, doors, and windows are ballistic
protected using Composites Polyethylene Panels rated to NIJ Level Ill – IV protection. It has a length
overall of 18.00m, a beam of 6.10m, and a draught of 0.90m.

Engines/Propulsion

The X18 tank boat uses the main engine in the form of two MTU V12 2000M86 diesel engines with a
power of 1700 horsepower. The X18 is also equipped with the MJP 550 Waterjet propulsor. With a fuel
tank capacity of around 6000 liters, the X18 is able to reach destinations as far as 600 nautical miles
(1,100 km) without refueling.

Weapons

The main weapon system of the X18 Tank Boat is the John Cockerill Defense Cockerill 3105 turret.
This system is based on a versatile and powerful high-pressure low recoil-force Cockerill 105mm gun.
Fully stabilised, accurate by day or night, and able to use a wide range of NATO standard 105mm
ammunition, this weapon system directly engages a broad spectrum of targets at up to 5,000m range,
and indirectly engages targets to 10,000m range. The powerful, accurate and flexible Cockerill C3105
weapon system gives the X18 Tank Boat Commander a wide range of tactical options at all stages of
his mission. The 105mm is also capable of firing the Cockerill Falarick 105 Gun Launched Anti-Tank
Guided Missile (GLATGM). Elevating to +42° the weapon delivers exceptional engagement capability in
complex situations, and the GLATGM permits hard and Point targets to be engaged at extended
ranges (up to 5 km). The mounting of this type of system allows for flexibility in logistics with the various
calibers already in common use with NATO and other major military powers. This is the first time that
any company has conceived of mounting this type of system aboard a small, fast and stealthy
catamaran that with only a 1-meter draught makes it ideally suited for the confines of coastal waterway
operations.

Sensors, Electronics and Decoys

The Tank Boat is fitted with Doppler Radar with CHIRP Pulse Compression, four Multi-mission
Monitors, an Integrated Navigation Computer, GPS/AIS, and Transducer Multisensor with Depth,
Speed, and Temperature Functions.

Missions
Giving it the ability to execute beach and landings and insert or extract river squads of up to 60 Special
Forces or Marines. The X 18 ATC has a crew of 5, and the aft deck working area is rated up to 5 tons
for carrying logistic cargo, troops, drones and a high-speed Interdiction inflatable Raiding craft for
boarding and Seal insertion.
